Laapataa Ladies (2023)
A unique interesting, well made story that takes you miles
What most bollywood miss today - Strong story. And this movie is built on a foundation of a good story.
You quickly get invested and associate yourself with Phul and Deepak's tragedy of losing each other just after the wedding day. And the confusion that ensues.
The photo with veil on Phul's face was hilarious I wonder where such light-hearted comedy is missing these days. You only hear those crud, adult jokes that make you puck.
Anyways, the movie is a good watch, atleast way better than the dishum dishum crap that Bollywood dishes out every now and then.
Hopefully more movies like these would be made in the future.
Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food (2023)
Religious propaganda at its best
I wonder since when the prerequisite to cooking a tasty briyani is Namaz.
Well that is what the films tries to protray - how a girl from a strict Hindu priest family is oppressed and not allowed to persue her dream of becoming a Chef.
And how her boyfriend - Lo and Behold, a Muslim who is the catalyst to her becoming the best in her field. And his secret weapon being - finding flaws in other religion and enabling Purani to be free of guilt for consuming meat.
The whole premise of the movie seems to belittle a particular religion and to portray it in a bad light.
While everyone wants to live in harmony its these fringe Bollywood elements who fuel dis-harmony between religions.
What are you trying to depict?! That Hinduism is inferior to Islam?! Why? Can't we stay in peace? Why do you even have to compare two religions.
By all means showcase good in one religion, highlight bad parts of a religion just as "Oh My God" beautifully did but why be-little a religion?!
I wonder what gets into these Story-writers / Directors' mind. How far are they from ground realities.
My friend just commented "Give me what these guys are having" :P.
Hi Nanna (2023)
Way better than avg bollywod movies but far-fetched
Applaud South Indian cinema for always coming up with new and interesting storylines.
Mahi is a child with cystic fibrosis looked after by her father and grand-father. While there is always a suspense on who her mother is and what happened to her.
While her father fights to keep her alive meeting doctors after doctors, Mahi is overtaken by the urge to know about her mother and leaves house without informing anyone at home.
She meets Varsha, both of them confront Viraj (Mahi's father) for the truth.
Viraj after giving up shares how he was an aspiring photographer who fell in love with Varsha who is from a affluent family. They fight all the odds - especially Varsha's mother who is not happy with economic disparities between both the families.
However, the journey takes a sharp turn when Mahi is born with a life-threatening disease and how their marraige falls apart due to an accident.
While I found the story to be a little far-fetched I really liked how well Nanni and Mrunal Thakur played their parts. Especially Mrunal Thakur, she is the soul of the movie, no wonder she is the heart-throb of so many fans out there. Her cute smile can surely melt hearts. Looking forward to seeing her more in the future.
All in all it was a good movie. Atleast way better than average Bollywood masala movies.
Shastry Viruddh Shastry (2023)
Way better than random action flick
The underlying concept is so strong that it forces you to confront a grey situation. You are always torn between 2 sides and which one you should be supporting.
Even after the movie, I am still not confident on chosing a side if I were asked to judge the custody of the child.
On the one side there is a mother who has been working 12 hours a day to support her family. Since both the parents are working hard to make ends meet both the parents and grand-parents decide to let the grand parents do the up-bringing. In the meanwhile the parents would settle down and eventually take over the upbringing.
What eventually ends up happening is that even after 7 years the father is not settled while the grand-parents are now emotionally attached to the child.
As fate may have it the father is offered a business partnership overseas. They decide to take their kid with them. But the grand parents disagree.
What ensues is a legal battle full of no clear answers and a child that's caught up between 2 sides both of whom love him very much.
The screenplay could have been sped up but I love these grey movies. They force you to ponder over how you want your life to be and how tough situations can be.
Sajini Shinde Ka Viral Video (2023)
Worst Direction Ever
Half way into the movie. Feels like all actors were specifically instructed to do over acting.
That aside the direction is so bad that it feels like a school play. Dialogues were certainly written when the story writer was down 6 pegs.
I don't know who's the reviewer at Netflix. They still haven't cracked the formula for a good Hindi movie. Its time that Netflix does a complete overhaul of their India specific movie selection team.
Please spare us from this crap.
If you juxtapose this with 12th pass, this is not even 1% of what 12th pass achieved.
Not to mention I don't think Radhika Madan is fit for acting, must focus on something else, seriously!
Scoop (2023)
We just saw Scame 1992 Part 2
First few episdoes felt uneventful like the story is not going anywhere. It felt like a regular tv series on how news journalists run after a story.
Its only when Jagruti got aressted did the story took a turn for better and just kept on improving till culmination.
The inhuman treatment of under-trials, the depiction of how a person's will is systematically broken, the pain and fight of her family, the emotions of her and her child.
It feels so real that at the end of story you are rooting for Jagruti to get out of jail and be declared innocent. (While in the series she does get out of jail but in real-life many are not so fortunate)
These are the type of stories modern India needs not the typical 90s love stories. We have grown as a nation and so should our stories.
Rocket Boys (2022)
One of the best science drama India has produced
Really proud of the way this series makes you feel about our brave scientists. Very less shows / movies today are able to elicit the nationalist feeling that this series has. Kudos to the story writer for that.
With the flawless direction it feels like the cast was made for this series. Just perfect! Not a single episode feels out of place especially in the 2nd series till now (I am done with half of the series till now).
Jim Sarbh seems like a second incarnation of Homi Bhaba. The complex storyline with him and Raza is top class. The inherent struggle to accept the truth behind Raza's plea of innocence is worth watching.
Go watch this series if you haven't already!
Minnal Murali (2021)
An Indian take on superhero, very nicely done!
South Indian movies are outshining Hindi cinema and how so. First with Pushpa Raj Allu Arjun showed South has some great natural actors and now with Minnal Murali, it again proves that Hindi cinema needs to evolve a lot or South Indian cinema would outshine Hindi movies.
A true portrayal of how our thought process and parental teachings can be the difference between good and evil.
Minnal Murali in my opinion was a good watch but could have been much better if it was not only a fight between good vs evil but also had another plot running in the background that we may not be aware of.
Pushpa: The Rise - Part 1 (2021)
Allu Arjun was great while storyline was pathetic
Didn't expect such a bad storyline from South Indian cinema.
While Allu Arjun's performance was just the one saving grace for the movie.
Overall it was a waste of family time.
Jai Bhim (2021)
One of the best films in quite some time
It's a stark reality that we city people are just untouched and unaware of. Direction and story are top notch.
A must watch to understand how badly scheduled caste has been treated in rural areas. I ofcourse believe this is changing but we still need to make efforts to bridge the gap and eradicate caste differences once and for all.
