I will freely admit that when I first heard about this movie, I was more than a little concerned to find Adam Sandler in the lead role, of what looked to be a very Dramatic movie.
I missed this movie at the cinema, as I am sure a lot of people did, but having heard some reviews of it I decided it was about time I checked it out. And so I sat down to watch it, not sure whether I would end up loving it or hating it.
I'll be honest. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with the characters. I have read a few negative reviews online, of people that claim that it is young people who have read and overrated this movie. Personally, I don't see how anyone can say that. This was an amazingly well written, acted and directed film. It wasn't a massive blockbuster about what was obviously a very tragic event in itself. And in my opinion it didn't "cash in" on 9/11 as some people have said. It dealt with the issue in a sensitive way, and although it made reference to the terrible events it wasn't too concerned with the grand picture, instead it focused on one man's experience and loss.
The friendship between the two lead characters was very touching, and although initially both used their friendship as an escape, in the end it enabled them to begin to deal with their own issues.
And I have to say this as an Adam Sandler fan. WOW. It was a nice change to see him move away from the comedy and actually pull it off. In fact, not only pull it off, but make what I believe to be a very touching and well thought-out film. And managing to do that about what was probably one of the most tragic events in recent history without offence is pretty amazing.
Congratulations all around.
