New Tricks: Cry Me a River (2013)
The worst episode by far up to now
Oddly directed or edited with lots of dead air; Danny seemed lost; the story is icky albeit with a surprising twist. The bright spot is Holly who shines bright against an otherwise dull background. Thankfully the next couple of episodes come back to life suggesting that this dud is a one-off.
Inspector Morse: The Settling of the Sun (1988)
More weird writing and directing
I'm re-watching this series after a few years, and I must fondly remember later seasons because so far it's been a disappointment. The dialogue is often stupid or incomprehensible, and the direction is herky-jerky. Thank goodness for the Max and Lewis characters who keep things moving and entertaining.
Tin Star (2017)
Good acting and photography but tough to watch
I keep going back to try to finish this show but honestly, it is hard work. It is so tragic, with many characters that are so unlikable that it's more of a grind than entertainment. The constant F-words from nearly every character coupled with frequent nudity further detract for me.
Death of an Expert Witness (1983)
Painfully slow pace
I got in a little snooze while waiting for something to happen in this tedious production and woke to find that in the meantime, little had happened. Direction is pretty bad overall and it's not just in comparison to "today's standards." I don't remember any other show from this era dragging like this. Do I finish Part 2 of this DVD or cut my losses?
DCI Banks: Bad Boy: Part 1 (2014)
OMG, a GUN!!!
There are lots of things to like about this final pair of episodes, with complex plot and subplots that are revealed at just the right pace. The plot hinges on a missing gun which turns up (gasp!) in a girl's home. The resulting overreaction to this relative triviality is just silly and cringe-worthy and a real distraction from the otherwise excellent story. British PC-ness run amok.
Black Panther (2018)
Technically good, but a story designed by committee
I liked the acting, the action, the CGI. The story was a great disappointment, a mess of a composite of every comic book that came before it. Superman--check. Batman--check. Thor--check. Even throw in Mulan and Star Wars for good measure and of course the obligatory Hollywood political messages, more subtle than many recent movies, but there, like a sliver in the fun. All in all, a very unsatisfying film, and far short of my hopes and expectations.
