Hjartasteinn (2016)
Heart strings and tear drops.
It's been a while since I've last dared watch this kind of coming of age film. Usually I know what I'm in for, and I avoid the heart strings being tugged too harshly. I took a chance on this one - my, it was a struggle getting hold of the correct subtitles by the way :)
The gamble paid off in ways I didn't expect. It didn't only tug at my heart strings... it yanked and almost tore them. It perfectly portrayed my struggles as a confused kid in a culture and time when being gay was nothing less and an affront to god.
I haven't had a good cry like this in ages. Thank you.
Home Town (2016)
A wholesome watch!
These two put the "home" in home renovation! So far nothing feels staged or fake, and we enjoy every minute that these two lovebirds allow us into their lives.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Star What?
It really is as if the creators of Star Trek Discovery have never actually watched any of the previous series, and drew all their inspiration from the modern movies and non Start Trek sources. This is not Star Trek. This is just another Sci-Fi series set in space with familiar terminology and forgettable characters.
Even the "worst" of previous Star Trek series allowed you to get to know the characters, care about them, root for them. Right now a series about the lives of the Klingon crew and ship would be preferable to this.
A few people mentioned The Orville TV series. Yes, that definitely comes closer to what we're looking for. In fact, if Star Trek is heading this way, then someone else SHOULD pick up Gene Roddenberry's torch.
The media is flooded with movies and TV series that is all flash and no substance. Star Trek Discovery was supposed to be different. It isn't.
The Real O'Neals (2016)
Bittersweet and beautiful
This show is so bittersweet to me. We thoroughly enjoy the antics, his just-camp-enough-without-being-fake mannerisms, the supportive big bro, the cool dad, the surprised and eventually embracing mom... It's everything we wish we had when we came out of the closet 20 years ago. I'm so happy that shows like this can not only be made, but thrive.
I say bittersweet because, just like Troye Sivan's music & videos, it makes me feel happy for teens struggling with those questions, to have secular touchstones, but also makes me think... where were shows like this when I grew up?
I really hope we'll be able to join Kenny (Noah Galvin) and his family for many seasons to come!
