The Beekeeper (2024)
Beekeeper has no real sting
I was led to believe by my friends that I needed to see this movie and waited in great anticipation for it. I forgave Jason Statham for Transporter 2. I now find myself in the unenviable position of needing to forgive him again for making a movie that is possibly even more appalling than the aforementioned T2. He is possibly the most wooden, typecast and cliched actor of the modern era. I suppose the rugged English charm has afforded him copious opportunity to date but for me no actual acting talent is apparent. Supported by a cast of equally cliched characters, this movie manages to unsuccessfully exploit every known cliche in the book. Yes, there is action aplenty, a high body count and a premise that is really very silly when you think about it. Other reputable actors have managed to appear and risk sabotaging their legacy. Jeremy Irons for one should know better. This movie was predictable and over the top in as far as you can predict what's going to happen next with no guesswork required. I suppose the cartoonish like characters give it some appeal, but overall I felt like I was watching fifty other movies i had seen before in the space of its ninety eight minute running time. How did the pitch for this movie manage to get it the green light? Unless you were there yourself you will never know. There is a term bandied around "trash TV" for TV shows with no substance, poor writing and even more disastrous acting and directing. I would call this "trash cinema". The big question for me with this movie is "What's the point?". I can guarantee that if there is a sequel, I will be asking for an apology in advance for having the audacity to attempt to dupe an unsuspecting audience for a second time. Don't watch this movie would be my first recommendation. Tell anyone who is above ground and breathing to donate the money they would spend on seeing this movie to charity and do something worthwhile, rather than lining the pockets of Hollywood studio bigwigs who really don't need the money. This is ninety eight minutes I can't ever get back and it's possibly another ninety eight minutes I can do something constructive with rather than waste it on a sequel!!
Viva the Underdogs (2020)
Viva for Real
The band, the music, the story. I have read some reviews with differing and varied views and opinions. Armchair critics can be harsh. Pretentious indeed! How can this story be deemed to be of a band with a pretentious mindset. NO other band metal or otherwise has managed to achieve what Parkway Drive has achieved completely on their own terms. Self managed, mostly self funded and with a single focus - to put on the best show for their dedicated fans. Me, I've been in since day one and I am proud of their single minded determination to "make it". It's not easy and many have failed. This film highlights the sacrifices needed to make something of the short time we are given on this earth. The drive and will to create something memorable is truly admirable and has been achieved here. Viva Parkway Drive for having the guts to see it through!!
Moonfall (2022)
A prescription for disaster
Don't watch this movie at all if you are expecting anything resembling a serious disasterpiece. However, if you know and like Roland's movies and his directorial style, then sit down, buckle up and hold on for the greatest lowball, high budget rocket ride you'll have today!!
Fargo (2014)
Far out Fargo!
I have never watched anything like it. Continually laughing out loud on the inside is exhausting but so, so rewarding. Well written, acted and directed. I keep seeing Lester (Martin Freeman) going "Who now?". So perfectly cast. Billy Bob Thornton is a perfect addition to the cast. I drew comparisons to Anton from No Country for Old Men, a subtly sublime and menacing hitman but in a weirdly delightful way!! Ten out of ten!!
Greenland (2020)
World War Greenland?
I woke up from a dream and thought "Gerard Butler isn't in World War Z!!" Then i fell in to a coma. All plot lines have been dutifully stolen. Say no more!!
Internal Affairs (1990)
Internal Affairs
I found Richard Gere to be at his menacing best in this role. It seems to me that he found his true calling playing the villain in this film. The ultimate bully with no remorse is a role that seems to suit the sublime talent lurking within Richard Gere. Look at the role he plays here and watch Unfaithful. There is no comparison and it looks like Richard wanted to commit career suicide playing that role in Unfaithful. Two thumbs up for Dennis Peck. The way he manipulates people and situations to meet his own agenda really plays out well with all the twists that come in the plot throughout the film. I don't think this film is a real vehicle to showcase the talents of Andy Garcia. I agree that he appears soft and there were times I truly felt sorry for him having to play this role. This movie is definitely my pick of roles for Richard Gere and it has the desired effect on the watcher, because I found myself thinking of how many ways to take this guy out. I find this movie on my shelf every few weeks and watch it just to plan more ways to get rid of Dennis Peck!!!!! Other best role - Breathless.
