Laysa Laysa (2003)
6/10
Laysa Laysa is a bollywood inspired romcom, nevertheless entertaining, excluding the first-half which is a distasteful attempt at comedy! Read more to know more
21 April 2024
Rakesh, a wealthy business owner, takes on the manager role for his best friend Chandru to hide Chandru's fraudulent and irresponsible behavior from Chandru's visiting family. Soon, Rakesh falls for one of Chandru's cousins, Balamani, and proposes to her. However, Balamani reveals a troubling past to Rakesh, complicating their future.

Director Priyadarshan woos the audience with beautiful cinematography but loses them when it comes to a sense of humor. The jokes are all terrible, especially in the first hour of the film, which is very difficult to sit through. If you manage to get to the second half, where there is an actual story, then you might be entertained. There is a really good flashback portion, and the twist is also well-written. The whole 'will-they-won't-they' keeps the audience engaged throughout the film, but to get there, they have to endure the bland and tasteless first half, which is nothing but a cruel mess. Shaam and Trisha (The lead), are both terrible actors in this film, but are saved by their looks.

Priyadarshan also objectifies women throughout his film, especially in the title song 'Laysa Laysa.' It might have been acceptable for that generation, but it is awkward to sit through the first ten minutes of a film that only shows cleavage and thigh shots of a woman in close-ups and slow motion, writing a letter that has little significance in the film. Harris Jayaraj deserves huge praise for all the songs in this film, as they are classic hits and the reasons why this film is still remembered.

Fighter (2024)
3/10
A failed attempt in monetizing Pulwama tragedy, 'Fighter' is about Deepika's glamor rather than IAF's valour
13 April 2024
Patty (played by Hrithik Roshan), a squadron leader at the Indian Air Force, is determined to seek revenge on Pakistan, and Azhar Akthar, the terrorist mastermind behind the Pulwama Attack, who looks as fresh as an apple out of the fridge, even after getting hit by multiple missiles. Mini (played by Deepika Padukone), is Patty's colleague and love interest, whose feminism goes for the garbage as she either dances, shouts, or cries in the film and has been given no value as an officer of IAF.

Siddharth Anand has written an amazing screenplay that goes like this: A heart-touching exploitation of the patriotic feelings of the audience followed by an exposing and glamorous song by Hrithik and Deepika (IAF Officers); Another venture into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir by IAF immediately followed by Hrithik Deepika's annoying love drama with songs, scenes where Deepika cries and soullessly mutters written dialogues, probably because of which Hrithik goes to the south for absolutely no reason, and he gets back to finally kill the 'undertaker' terrorist.

Everything about 'Fighter' is an age-old cliche that you could see coming from miles away, except the visual effects which you could enjoy. What pisses me most about this film is that it failed to glorify the officer who got caught by the Pakistani army, who was celebrated as a hero, and is more focused on a worthless emotionless crappy character like Patty, who did not do anything other than letting people get killed or captured. I was waiting for a twist exposing Patty, as a Pakistani terrorist himself and, Mini as a pub dancer committing fraud as an officer, but I was disappointed.

Por (2024)
4/10
An overexaggerated comical depiction of college education, 'Por' neither does justice to its title nor its audience.
13 April 2024
Yuvaraj (played by Kalidas Jayaram) is a huge dumb jerk, begging to get knocked out by Prabhu (played by Arjun Das), a relatively mature drug addict (who is also a student) seeking redemption. In their rivalry, Gayathri (played by T. J. Bhanu) gets caught, who is a righteous young woman actively defeating nepotism in student politics.

Even Jimshi Khalid's aesthetic cinematography, Sanjith Hegde's soothing background music, and Bejoy Nambiar's excellent direction couldn't save the latter's awful screenplay, which is written for a web series rather than a theatrical film, by which I mean, it is a chore to sit through this never-ending childish war between Yuvaraj and Prabhu, who are constantly distracted by 'other' characters whose names are not even worth remembering.

Bejoy Nambiar, in his attempt to take a stance against ragging, and casteism ends up in turn glorifying them, with unnecessary hype, cool slow-mo shots, and dialogues that only a casteist could write. To conclude, 'Por' was a big NO for me in terms of story, but I did admire the crew's work. Also, Indian Express has given the film a one-out-of-five rating, which I don't disagree with.

Despite resolving two different murder cases in its run time, Anweshippin Kandethum falls short of being a one-timer. Read more to know why!
3 April 2024
Anand Narayanan, a righteous police officer, determined to resolve the Blessy murder case, locks horns with various parties, only for things to become awry at the last minute, and he gets suspended. As redemption, Anand is assigned to the unsolved murder case of Sri Devi, under the promise that he can resume his duties, if he finds the killer.

Anweshippin Kandethum is Anand-centered, but Anand is not an intriguing character, yet thanks to the gripping screenplay, you don't get bored. Although engaging from beginning to end, Andweshippin Kandethum doesn't shy away from familiar tropes and, similar themes that form the conventions of the crime genre. The 2.5-hour duration of "Anweshippin Kandethum" didn't fully showcase the screenplay's potential and might have benefited from trimming down.

If you are a fan of thrillers, you might or might not like it. If you are a bored audience, the film will entertain you. However, it is a one-time watch.

Lover (2024)
2/10
An impactful film with its core set on an unlovable protagonist going on a redemption path by pure luck - You will either love this film or hate this film!
30 March 2024
'Lover' tells the tale of Arun, a recurrent bad decision-maker, apparently an alcoholic, stoner, and chronic smoker, who is aggressively in love with Divya and expresses his love through constant psychotic tantrums, pushing, shoving, and, verbally abusing her. Before you could judge Divya, who is traumatized by his actions for six years and still gives him multiple chances to prove himself, the director, Prabhu Ram Vyas, makes it clear that the story is about Arun and we don't get to see Divya's world completely. Arun, being an incorrigible character, is stuck in a cycle of mistakes and misery and we, as an audience, are asked to tolerate him for the first 1.5 hours.

If you made it to the second half of the film, here is your award for the patient man on Earth. Because now you have entered the accidental redemption arc for Arun which is only necessary, or no one else will watch this movie. The whole arc continues to test your patience, with Arun being 'Arun', still not getting it that Divya is not his pet. I wish I entered the screen to knock sense into him, but Divya thankfully does that in the last ten minutes of the film, which I wish she had done before. Lover is raw, and real, and depicts the common tale of women who lack self-esteem falling in love with miserable stoners, whose perception of what life is' is subjective to what drug they have consumed that day. My heart goes out to all Divya's in the world. May you rest in peace at least in your death.

South Indian Cinema visits London to recall Amy Jackson - a fail-safe attempt by Vijay
17 March 2024
'Guna must rescue his daughter from a terminal illness while also protecting his country from terrorists in London' would be a one-line summary of Mission (Chapter 1? Seriously Vijay?).

A mix-match of Thandavam, and many Hari films, we get an 'I have seen it before' kind of film, except the part, where it is mostly shot in London (or Ramoji Film City, who knows). 'Mission' must have solely relied on North Indian or Andhra markets as the scope of the patriotic-action-adventure genre of films has become limited in Tamil Nadu. That being said, it is not a complete waste of a film. Vijay's efforts in story-telling have not gone unnoticed, for there are no musical numbers to interrupt the story with vivid characterization, where supporting characters get to have their spotlight moments - which they spoil with their lack of intelligence but we will come to it later. The stunt is cool, especially with an action sequence with Nimisha at the end of the film that I really enjoyed.

Amy Jackson was a pain to watch on screens, especially her Tamil. Vijay should understand that it is okay to let the actors speak dialogues in their languages and later dub that in Tamil, instead of telling an artificial story where everyone speaks Tamil. Typical cliches of commercial cinema were excruciating to watch, even for my father. Guna fights ten people at a time, Guna falls in the canal but somehow doesn't drown, Guna must always take the spotlight and be the only character with common sense, Guna, a person with a sharp intelligence somehow misses his purse now and then, Guna doesn't see a snitch from miles away but can smell out all the other criminals, and so much more!

A stereotypical Punjabi 'friend' who also speaks Tamil, too many dialogues that are cringe, an unwanted flashback, a weak antagonist who is short of manpower at all times, a stupid child that doesn't live up to its hype, snitches being snitches for about 70% of the film without getting caught - you could list the drawbacks of Mission: Chapter 1 in a complete roll of toilet paper and still you might have some points. In my opinion, Vijay should have trimmed Mission around 90 minutes and the storyline should have been sharp.

To conclude, Mission might be embarrassing to watch for some, and exhausting for many, but it is still a decent attempt. 2.5/5.

Damsel (2024)
5/10
I wonder how I would feel if I watched 'Damsel' as a child, but as an adult, it is a mediocre one!
17 March 2024
I am not a fan of fairy tales, but I do like modern twists on them. Damsel tells the tale of Elodie, the princess of a faraway kingdom, who gets duped by her fiance, who throws her into a cave as a sacrifice to a vengeful dragon. What happened next? Why did they do this to her? Did Elodie survive? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story.

I did like the pacing of Damsel; It did not take a long time for us to get into the story and Millie is a fine actress; She shows a great deal of emotions on her face, which are compelling and fits the rebellious nature of Elodie. CG was stunning at times, glitchy at other times, but appreciate the effort put into it.

Characterization and storyline is a huge 'meh' for me. The screenplay is an ancient cliche, you always know what's gonna happen next and like all other fairy tales, Damsel does not differentiate much between its characters. Every one has two-dimensional traits.

Damsel is also a women-centric movie; In the sense, men don't play much part in it. The protogonists and the antagonists are all women. Felt like I was watching an Indian drama, to be honest.

To conclude, Damsel could be a film you watch to pass time on your weekends but it does not leave an impact. On the other hand, the film might be a little scary for children to watch.

Is this the worst film ever?
14 March 2024
Singapore Saloon is a wannabe emotional film that has no idea on how real life functions and all it wants is to seek attention from its audience with its pathetic screenplay that lacks logic, characterization, scene continuity, and, whatever that it that makes a good film.

If you are looking to get inspired from this movie, I'm telling you, watching paint dry, is much more entertaining than this. I had to watch the whole film in 1.5x speed as it is too slow and things don't make sense; Everything happens to the main character and he basically does nothing to become a millionaire.

When I heard about this film, I thought it would be revolutionary since in India, cutting someone's hair is associated with certain caste only. R. J Balaji's good for nothing film skips all the actual issues that a person would face to become an entreprenur and the entire narrative of this film is constructed on weird consequences that is way too improbable to happen to a single person.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a dream attempt to revive the original phenomenon with incredible production quality compromised in terms of story and screenplay
24 February 2024
[+30%) They got us with the CGI, man. The graphics were dark, gritty, and complete. You could believe in bending now. I watched the series and went back to watch the OG animation - sorry to say this - The animation felt inferior!

[+20%] Our favorite non-human characters from the animation on-screen live-action is a nostalgic experience. If you are a fan, you know the story. You await the characters and you rejoice in the appearance. You. Feel. Good. All credit to the CGI team.

[+10%] Thanks to the makers for not having cut down the major sequences of Avatar, which makes Avatar, the Avatar. You get to completely enjoy the climax, frame by frame. No disappointment there. I don't want to nitpick either.

[±10%] The casting is not perfect but better than Avatar (2010). The actors do resemble their animated counterparts. You love some. You hate some. Subjective.

[-10%] You could search for music during epic moments. The sound design should have been better, and epic moments needed epic BG music which was not the case in this series, unfortunately.

[-10%] I don't know what kept them from making this a 13-part series, most probably budget. Yet, it means, that they have to cramp the storylines and alter story tracks which did not sit well with me.

[-20%] Humor, a strong forte of the OG animation went practically non-existent in this 8-part series. Huge letdown, especially to Sokka's character. Everyone is so serious, it sucks.

Score: [+20%]

Avatar: The Last Airbender Live-Action series by Netflix and Nickelodeon is a dream attempt to revive the original phenomenon which is evident from the incredible production quality they show us on screens but constraints still exist, limiting the complete scope of the revitalization, especially in terms of story and screenplay - factors which cannot be compromised resulting in an average output as a whole but still a memorable and impressionable one at that.

The Road (II) (2023)
1/10
Review of 'The Road' and reason why I gave it one-star.
17 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(+1) The film piques your curiosity from frame one - teases you with a con and makes you wonder what would happen next.

(-3) Trisha, like any other thriller she has ever acted in, could not bring up the intensity of her character to the screen. Her acting is bad.

(-2) The movie tries so hard to create the protagonist and the antagonist that it loses track of reality. After a while, it doesn't feel like these things have happened to these characters - it feels like these things were made to happen to these characters so that they could become the hero and the villain.

(-2) The movie has no logic whatsoever. You have a scene where the female lead walks at midnight in the middle of the road, witnesses an accident, rushes to get help, and returns after ten seconds only to find out that the accident scene is wiped out entirely blood spill - vanished. Road - cemented. Accident - did not happen. Later we find out that a group of con men did it but people can't wipe out an accident scene with a car crash in ten seconds.

(+1) Both of the stories of the hero and villain create impact and you feel sorry for them, which I think is a win for the director.

(-2) The entire movie is predictable. You watch how lovely Trisha's family is, you know for sure, they are going to end up dead. They show you Maya's story all along and don't show him colliding with Trisha's track - you know that they are telling you the origin of the villain story.

(-3) The climax is a mess. Does not make any sense.

(=) The song 'Dummalangi' was good but it is not in the film.

The Road, overall, is a laughable attempt at making a thriller, Trisha is a wrong choice, and the audience doesn't get invested in the film because there is no intensity to these characters and the entire screenplay is plastic. Wish they had made it fast-paced and did not try too hard to build up the antagonist and used that time to maybe show shades of the protagonist instead. This is a background film. You can put the film on while you scroll through reels on Instagram, or when you are doing household chores, you will get the idea of the film, without giving it much attention because it is damn predictable.

Saba Nayagan (2023)
7/10
[7/10] Here is what I think about 'Sabanayakan': A complete list of where the film scores and where the film fails.
17 February 2024
(+2) Ashok Selvan is an excellent actor and has also become a skilled dancer. He is truly captivating on screen, and his dialogue delivery and expressions add depth to his character, 'Saba'.

(-1) Unfortunately, Karthika's acting is subpar. Although her character has limited scope, she fails to make an impression.

(+2) The dance choreography in this movie is both unique and creative. It'll leave you amazed and impressed. Kudos to the masters Raju Sundaram, Leela, and Brinda.

(-1) The songs in the movie were not up to the mark. The lyrics were outdated and failed to blend well with the overall theme of the film. They were forgettable.

(+3) The movie's concept is brilliant - the lead character is arrested and begins narrating his love stories to the police. The credit goes to C. S. Karthikeyan.

(+2) The screenplay is refreshingly different from the usual romantic movies that idealize fairy tales. It's commendable that it remains grounded in reality, with the lead character falling in love multiple times and not sticking up to one girl.

(-2) However, the ending is clichéd, and the director could have avoided it altogether. It's unrealistic and doesn't fit with the rest of the movie, which tries to be as realistic as possible. The climax seems like a fantasy and was included just to wrap up the story.

(-1) The movie feels a bit too long after a while. It's exhausting to see the lead character's heart being broken multiple times, and the viewer starts wishing for the movie to end.

(+4) The movie's humor is its strong point. It's been a while since I watched a movie that made me laugh so much. The comedy isn't overdone, with the tone of the dialogues and the background music being perfectly balanced. The jokes are on point and relatable.

(-1) Some dialogues in the movie are derogatory towards women, with the word 'figure' being used to objectify them. For example, the dialogue 'Our boys do not leave out a single 'figure,' they 'correct' them all' is disgusting and should have been avoided. Credit goes to C. S. Karthikeyan.

Overall, Sabanayakan is an enjoyable, lighthearted comedy that's perfect for a weekend watch. Although there are some negative aspects to the movie, the positive ones outweigh them. You can watch it with your friends, family, and loved ones without any worries. It won't disappoint you.

Brahmastra: What you might love and what you might hate.
12 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
+1: The VFX of the film is absolutely spectacular. Every shot is well-lit thanks to the brilliant cinematography. The lights, man, they are a different level.

+1: We can give it up for the director. The stunt sequences are all shot well. You realize that it is 'Cinema' and 'Fantasy'. Kudos for sticking up to the genre.

+2: Music is grand, totally capable of giving you goosebumps. Along with the eye grabbing VFX, the background music is well-mixed. The songs are good too. A marvel to watch on theatres.

+1: The locations are stunning. It was told that the film was shot in Bulgaria and stuff. You can witness the grandeur in all of that supporting the screenplay.

-1: A-grade actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Akkineni Nagarjuna and Deepika Padukone have little screen space in this movie it almost feels like a bait and the fact that Deepika is acting as the mother of Ranbir is personally disgusting.

-1: The characterization in this film sucks. There is no reason behind Mouni Roy's character in pursuing the Brahmastra incessantly and you have Alia Bhatt, annoying the audience to the core. She doesn't have any powers and often puts herself in danger waiting to be saved. God, kill her.

± 1: I think the film tried too hard to force the romance between Shiva and Isha that many audience including myself would not have felt it. I mean, of couse, Isha meets Shiva and falls in love with him, within what, 2 days? And spews all the dialogues as if they have known each other for centuries. I am all up for finding 'the one' in fantasy films but the problem is they don't even seem like 'the one'.

To conclude, Brahmastra is technically superior but struggles to stand because of its weak screenplay. However, it is a visual treat and deserves to be watched at least once, in respect to the effort that's visible on the screens.

Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019)
6/10
Engrossing first season; Powerpacked season second - then goes downhill!
11 February 2024
I am not a fan of episodic long form drama - I believe that is reserved for TV. OITNB is not binge-worthy. Looking at the poster and trailer, I thought it was revolutionary. May be it was but it just doesn't have enough to keep the audience hooked.

OITNB primarily tells the story of Piper, angelic white woman who accentuates every word joining a world of misfits and criminals in a federal prison, for a crime she committed like what, ten years ago. Piper is different, or it is always said of her by the other characters.

She doesn't belong in the prison or so we are made to believe and as audience, we connect with her at one point or the other. She tries to change the things and cries a lot. Sympathy is a winner in business. You've also got other characters to serialize this drama, characters who are all good and kind of innocent; OITNB exists in a world where crime is committed out of stress, power and manipulation rather than passion.

May be authentic criminals are in another prison, who knows. Every supporting character apart from Piper is interesting. We've got Black women tales, Latina women tales and the flashbacks, man, they are good.

In a series like this it is so important to connect to the main character and Piper, from an angelic good shoes, soon becomes a messed-up character making all the bad choices unreasonably. For instance, she puts a person in psych ward (who deserved it) only to bail her back - we are told that she is guilty but we don't want her to be guilty. I would say that's character inconsistency and that it ruins everything.

We also have certain characters who we can never empathize with. Crazy Eyes is one of them. She is DANGEROUS but the screenplay tries so hard to make you love her, it is exhausting. Season one was good - it was episodic, each episode had an agenda and it was really interesting to get to know the past lives of certain characters and only feel sorry for them cause of the way the ended up in prison.

Season 2 is powerful. You have a manipulative antagonist for the first time in the series and the end is one of the most satisfying ending ever. By Season 3, I believe that they have lost the momentum. Season 2 was powerpacked and with Season 3 you understand that they are trying to go with Season 1 formatting which wouldn't work because Piper has become the most unlikable character ever and Alex Vause is disgusting.

The stories of the black girls aren't as powerful as either. There is absolutely no motive why any of these characters must survive the prison or exit out of it. Initially you had Piper, who had her marriage at stake and everything and the circumstance made you feel longing for the day she will be out of prison. You felt for her.

But then, the other characters, except Morello, Daya and Bennett, you have Nicky, a drug addict, Red, a Russian lady, Healy, counsellor who should have been written off the series a long time ago. These characters have no vision, mission or goal or anything for that case that matters.

The series just goes on to show you how they live, what they do and how they had been - all of this at some point should make you wonder, Why should I care?

The Good Doctor (2017–2024)
8/10
Light-hearted; Serialized; Wholesome; Episodic
25 January 2024
The Good Doctor like most of the series that airs on TV is a serialized life story of an autistic doctor that doesn't obey much logic because it's got to entertain and the series doesn't run that deep because it has to be episodic.

I believe that the people lay in more expectations on the show, expecting it to be like some of the modern Netflix/Prime series, but it is old-fashioned and episodic - like the entire series revolves around certain surgeons in a private hospital; These surgeons can do any surgery in the world because again, the show has to be entertaining and they all have character traits that define them.

The story only revolves around the main character, Shaun and though the supporting characters are all brilliant and deserve their own storyline, it is not possible with this kind of setting. One cannot expect The Good Doctor to be like Game of Thrones because it is like The Flash and The Young Sheldon kind of series - Each episode has a point to reach and once it is reached, the episode ends. The outcomes are all very much predictable.

But still you like this series mainly if you are a medico fan like me. Understanding human bodies and different kinds of diseases is an interesting and thought provoking experience. It activates the reward part of my brain.

Hi Nanna (2023)
5/10
At times unbearable, Hi Nanna is your recycled version of old Telugu/Tamil films meeting today's generation
16 January 2024
Hi Nanna narrates the story of Viraj, Yashna and Varsha stuck in what Yashna thinks a love triangle but she never comes to realize that it is and has never been a triangle; as it is a long line formed by sequences of unfortunate events relying on shots of montage and a rhythm of background melody to cover up that Yashna is a huge red flag, with her flares beaming from the screen.

Hi Nanna is a cinematic version of what life would be 1. If you don't know what effective communication in your relationship means. 2. if you rely on drama to solve everything in your life and 3. If you don't visit a psychologist to heal your trauma and 4. If you hope to find someone to dump your trauma on.

Hi Nanna is set up in Telugu Cinematic Universe where logic doesn't work; the heroine is a nutcase; the villains are not villains but misunderstood heroes; and communication barely happens for the sake of cinematic twist. Unfortunately, none of which work for audience who has seen this a thousand times at least on screens.

Annapoorani (2023)
7/10
I want the Vadakkans to stop infecting the south - Is it possible?
16 January 2024
The hate towards Annapoorani is unjustifiable and is motivating for me to give it ten stars, although I will give a seven for this film, it deserves a six. It is not a film that is aimed to spread false propaganda. For people, who watch Tamil films regularly, we know that we love spreading unity among religions and we have always included scenes in our films which portray the unity between the Hindus and the Muslims. Annapoorani has just done that.

Annapoorani narrates the tale of Annapoorani, a girl who is born in a Brahmin family, setting her aspirations to become India's best chef. Unfortunately, the Brahmin community doesn't eat non vegetarian and they see it as a sin, and her family has been traditionally cooking vegetarian food for the people who visit the temple and for the God himself.

Now, if Annapoorani's aspirations have to come true, she has to eat and cook non-vegetarian food which means that her ancestry is going to take a hit. Annapoorani is in a tough position much like the main character in the film 'Elemental'. Both of these films talk about a girl's aspirations getting hindered by parental/societal expectations. She might also be in love with a person who is not of her religion - this track of the story although was not explored much, does not promote love jihad.

The plot line of Annapoorani is solid. It has its heart straight in convincing people that religion/caste is just a belief and doesn't become your identity or define your actions. The film is typically progressive for people from the south and expectantly regressive for people from the north because they are aggressive about religion stuff.

The ideas of Annapoorani are fresh. The rivalry between the greatest chef in India and his son is cliche af. The cooking reality show in the film is much better than the actual reality shows that we see on movies. The films has taken cheesy steps to promote communal unity which was cringe-worthy.

I think negative publicity has a value and this movie is going to get even more popular thanks to our Vadakkan brothers. The greatest mistake ever made is to dub this film in Hindi. Must have avoided that.

A life lesson
31 December 2023
Gigi doesn't get a call back after the dates. In real life, she would have gotten it but the other party would just want to have sex with her. I am just saying that this stuff is real. The film portrays the reality of the dating world where it has become harder and harder to settle with somebody and even if you did, they cheat!

I liked each one of the characters in the movie. I believe that for a film to win, it has to be relatable and I could not think of another film that related with me so much than this one. You could understand the pain and emotions of every character because you yourself might have been one of them at some point in your life.

The modern dating theory doesn't pass the vibe check without talking about attachment. You've got Gigi who has anxious attachment style and Alex who is an avoidant and eventually they end up together, but in real life, it would have been a process. And then you have Anna, Janine and Ben, all of them - messed up people. They all have to figure out themselves before entering into relationships. Not to forget Connor and Neil, who were guys that sure did know what they want. I admired them.

To conclude, if I had this much to talk about a film, I can assure you that it was good. I was trying to watching for a long time and it was satisfying to the core.

Conjuring Kannappan tells the story of (you guessed it) Kannappan and his family getting haunted by a vodoo device and their struggle to escape a dream realm. The concept had potential but the writer had to spoil it, the musician (Yuvan Shankar Raja) had to spoil it and finally, the director had to spoil it.

Humor is a missing element in this comical film. Screeplay is fickle. Effort is non existent. For beginners, the film opens to Kannappan waking up to find that there is a problem with the water supply in his house. Unfortunately, he has to attend an interview soon.

To take bathe (?!), he opens an ancient well next to his house and draws filthy water from it. He takes bathe in it, changes his clothes, goes back to his room and attends an online interview! I am still trying to understand how this script passed the check.

Yuvan's BGM in theatres will cause hearing impairment - one of his worst. The acting is as plastic as it can be and the dubbing is outright awful. Characterization is mostly absurd. Locations are limited. The camera movements were not note worthy at all.

You can skip watching this movie on theatres and wait for it to be broadcast on TV.

Light Hearted Entertainer To Watch on Boring Weekends
2 December 2023
Rich parents hire a 32 year old woman to date their 19 year old son.

No Hard Feelings is a light hearted wholesome entertainer. If you are expecting a laugh your head off comedy, this is not it. But it is a good film to watch, I promise.

I heard the film got controversial because of the age difference between the characters. Why so serious? If you are one of those who stood against the idea of an older woman dating a younger boy, then don't watch this film. It will be hurtful for you.

I personally enjoyed it. Predictable but also enjoyable. A perfect movie to watch on weekends with your friends to pass time.

Put on so much expectations in the first half only to change the story completely in second half. A Karthick Subburaj Vadai.
16 November 2023
Okay. I think it is time to scream this into the world. Many are gaslighting that this is pure cinema and everything but as a writer myself, I felt like this is two different scripts amalgamated to one for the sake of runtime. One of the most problematic aspects of being a writer is that you can easily bring up characters and tie knots everywhere, meaning that you can put your characters in unimaginable, inescapable situations but how you are going to undo all the knots and take the characters out without being predictable is where everything matters.

Jigarthanda Double X, such as that, introduces two different characters, who lock horns, but one chooses violence to fight the other, and the other chooses the camera (or cinema) as the weapon. Sure it is a fresh perspective and the way these characters were built, adding on to multiple elements of their existence, the supporting characters, the small but significant back stories - I loved everything. You had this amazing interval block where the knot was complete and all you expected post-interval was for Karthick Subburaj to undo the knot but instead what he did was put more knots on the existing knots and finally blew up everything. Sabash! It was an easy thing to do - a wicked thing.

I mean, you have all these dialogues praising artists and you show the power of cinema - sure the audience who love art are going to weep; But as a critic, you see right through the bs on how cunning all of this is. You wait with expectations that the story is about the characters but later it would be revealed that there is a much larger, typical Tamil cinema cliche storyline that would take the centerplace sidetracking our main characters. And the way the film ends, let us say, it was rather emotional than logical. This film is surely for those who get hyped up by manipulative cinema.

Jawan (2023)
5/10
Over the top output from Atlee doesn't disappoint if you had low expectations
8 November 2023
Atlee isn't known for his authenticity in Tamil Nadu. I watched Jawan with such low expectations that the movie amused me. A copy of various films - true but the intent of the film is set right. A wake up call to every Indian - a powerful message from the Khan himself. Sure one should appreciate Atlee's audacity to challenge the Indian government.

Story: Vikram Rathore (Sharukh Khan) is a vigilante with intentions of doing good to people. Narmada Rai (Nayanthara) is the officer in charge to capture Vikram. Kalee Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi) is the symbolification of all evil and is the only thing that would bring closure to this typical tale.

Jawan runs fast and its characters run faster. Timelines skip. Tracks mingle. Logic dies as time passess but it is kind of interesting to watch initially. Predictablity kills curiosity later. Audience say 'ugh'. Vikram doesn't stop. Flashback sequences. Bullets firing in the air. Cringe moments.

But there is a quality in production that is admirable. Anirudh's music saves Jawan. Fresh air of breath to the Hindi cinema for sure. All in all Jawan is mediocre. You could watch it after its release. Better to watch in Hindi version with subtitles. Tamil version has bonus scenes though.

Saw X (2023)
8/10
Ah! How much I missed a SAW film!
29 October 2023
The best things about sequels in franchises is watching your favorite characters on screen again. Amanda Young's return to the SAW franchise sure made me watch the movie. People think that saw is all about gore but for me, it has always been about ethics.

Would you want a criminal to be sawed in half because he wronged you? That's the question. Before watching this film, sadly, I had to watch the unimpressive prequel called 'Spiral'. And I was tuning in expecting disappointment but this Saw X brought in the original flavour of the franchise and enthrilled me.

I'm excited to have seen more of John Kramer's character. This film takes its time to unfold, builds up slowly, connects all dots and finishes. I didn't particulary like the ending ethic but still the movie is impactful.

You also get answers to your questions as to why Amanda Young turned into an unapolegetic nightmare later in the series. Saw X also explores the dynamic between her character and John Kramer. I'm glad that the film had more to offer than I expected and I recommend this to SAW fans.

It is the best one after Saw and Saw II.

Spiral (2021)
5/10
Ran out of ideas franchise needs some out of the box thinking right now
29 October 2023
Spiral is a fresh perspective in the Saw franchise. We've got real people here, real characters who we see experiencing the painful deaths. Spiral is different because it doesn't play a sick game - it is not completely gore; It has story as well.

Chris Rock as the lead is funny, a straight out meme dialogue spitting character and the rest of the cast doesn't make an impression. You don't mourn for them. Saw films follow a definite pattern - If you are surprised by the last thirty minutes, then the film is a success but unfortunately Spiral doesn't check that out. The ending is predictable.

Given that story plays a crucial role in this film of the franchise, Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger must have thought of better outcomes and the tease of a possible sequel only sickens the entire deal. I would like to see more of Jigsaw than his copycat killer without a versatile purpose.

DD Returns (2023)
5/10
DD Returns proves directors can make jokes without adult content. Hmmm!
22 October 2023
DD Returns, unlike its previous ventures, has an interesting screenplay. You have these good for nothing characters meeting at a certain point where the story unfolds. But for them to meet, it takes 40 minutes. In other words, the first forty minutes of the film was snooze fest. Editor N. B. Srikanth could have used his skills here or ofRo (music director) could have saved us with his talent.

Unfortunately both failed us. OfRo's skills shine in background score but is a pain factor in musical numbers. Srikanth's edit suffers from continuity errors - you have no idea how certain characters end up in certain places and you guess that either there is a whole in the screenplay or in the editing. Most probably the latter.

I would not like to rant any further. After the first forty minutes, the story becomes interesting. The gamification of haunting adds spice to the comedy and soon it is like watching a comedic video gameplay with a backstory.

The positive factors about DD returns are simple logic, segmented screenplay and mild comedy. They did not try too hard. They did not jump too far. Everything is alright, average, mediocre.

Your typical slasher thriller - dark and gritty but you have seen it all.
17 October 2023
Konferens does surprise you, not with its story or screenplay, but with its cinematography. Story wise, it is a mediocre output from the crew,. You don't have much to talk about the flick because the violence, the characters, the deaths, the gore, they all feel like you have seen them somewhere.

The setting of the story felt artificial enough to make the slashing happen. The characters fit in a box - label them and predict their ending. Even the flashback was regular. The film doesn't have much to offer in terms of surprise elements or story, but it is quite entertaining without major loop holes, you can watch it in a weekend to pass time or so.
