Leave the World Behind (2023)
Terrible. Full of plot holes
I don't often review movies, but I just sat through this for 2 hours and it never went anywhere. First of all, it has more plot holes than a lb of swiss cheese. Tons of unexplained things such as how the animals react to the whole situation.
Second, the acting was just wooden for such great actors. It felt like they were each observing the events around them, rather than being drawn into them. And several of them act stupidly and out of character at different points in the movie.
And then, the big "reveal" is "told" to us from one of the characters who would definitely not have access to such information. Awful waste of my time.
The Batman (2022)
About an hour too long. Dreary, boring and tedious
I have liked several of the Batman movies over the years and generally enjoy a decent hero / superhero movie. Not this one. First of all, it was hard to actually watch. So many of the scenes were so dark they were barely visible. Film noir is one thing. It doesn't mean everything has to be black.
Second, it was so tedious in several parts. It feels like the editors / director were so enamored with every scene they just couldn't actually edit it down. As a result it was about an hour too long. This may have worked as the "directors cut", but not as the main release.
And I guess finally - the sexual tension between Batman and the Catwoman. Had about all the sex appeal of kissing your sister. Fell completely flat.
I really can't find a nice thing to say about, except I was glad when it was over.
Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019)
I took the time to find somewhere to review this series
So I used to watch Formula 1 when I was younger (I am British, living in America), but got bored with the lack of passing at the front. I felt like it was a procession of cars with very little action. I stopped watching about 10 years ago.
This series reignited my passion for the sport. It gets truly behind the scenes into the dirty, nitty-gritty of the sport and also get you excited about the battles beyond the front runners. I regained my passion for McLaren and feel more emotionally connected to all of the drivers. I also bought some McLaren merch as a result of this show.
It took a little bit of searching to find somewhere to actually write a review as Netflix only gives a thumbs up / down, and I really wanted to put this down. My adult daughters have also found a passion for the sport based on this series and we will try and make it to a live weekend when we can find tickets. I can't wait for the 2022 live season.
Wow! Just an amazing series. Watch it. You'll love it if you have any part of motor-racing in your soul.
Every Last One of Them (2021)
I feel truly bad for the hardworking people who worked on this awful movie
I recognize that there are many people who work on a movie and hope that it will be something to be proud of. This is one to lock in the basement and pretend you were not associated with it. I'm not even sure where to start on how bad this was. I kept thinking it was a spoof and the punchline would be delivered, but alas it was not. Here are just a few choice morsels.
The main protagonist puts a gun to the Sheriffs head, steals her car and proceeds to kill several people with the weapons he finds in it, including 1 in cold blood. And the next time she sees him, she just earnestly believes that he's "doing the right thing". I almost vomited into my hand at that scene.
Paul sloan has the emotional and acting range of Gerard Butler on a bad day. I mean, just terrible. He has one emotion, which looks like he needs to use the bathroom real bad.
At one point the protagonist is facing snipers and several heavily armed soldiers with assault rifles. Somehow EVERYONE misses him, even when he is running away in a straight line. At one point you see "tracer bullets" shooting about 50 ft over his head. I mean - I may not be a good shot, but a blind stormtrooper would get closer.
No one questions Richard Dreyfuss when he shows up. The sheriff doesnt even ask for ID, but just starts to blindly follow his softly spoken orders, even when it means driving a mass killer to his intended victims house. I mean. Come on. Seriously?
I WOULD like to something positive about the movie. I would, but I can't. It was a piece of drivel that should never have been made and I WISH I hadn't wasted 2 hours on a plane watching it.
