Star Trek: Discovery: Far from Home (2020)
The crew is back!
In this episode we get some much needed focus on the Discovery crew. Tig Notaro as Reno is still with us thankfully with her own brand of comedy; and her verbal judo with Stamets has been missed. Great dialogue.
Then we have Saru and Tilly bonding during a mission that goes sideways. The dialogue between them, not to mention some other memorable/quotable moments in this episode goes to prove that the writing is doing just fine despite some misguided attempts to say otherwise. And is admittedly looking better than previous seasons.
The theme of Saru and Tilly's mission is definitely western frontier. And it fits in perfectly in the setting they're in. Guest star Jake Weber playing Zareh was a perfect cast for the villain.
We also get to see the amazing skills of Michelle Yeoh.
Star Trek: Discovery: That Hope Is You, Part 1 (2020)
Great start to season 3!
What a great way to kick off season 3 of DSC. It was great to see Burnham release 2 years of stress in that shot on the planet. As always Sonequa's acting is superb. And I'm loving the new character Book (and we can't forget to mention Grudge). A fine addition to the Star Trek family. And perhaps the person who stole the show, Adil Hussain. The final few minutes had my eyes tearing up because of the acting of that man. I hope we see more of him in future episodes.
I'm curious to learn more about the Burn as well. What caused it, who caused it? Just need and want more details.
Star Trek: Discovery: Brother (2019)
Wow, what a great season 2 premiere!!
First I have to say Anson Mount was superb as Captain Pike. He plays that character superbly. Having seen him in happier times makes me more sad for what is to hapen to him as seen in TOS.
I loved how he treated the DSC crew knowing what Lorca had done to them in season 1. He took a roll call, trusted in their abilities, treated them with respect. It's just what they needed.
I like the lighter tone now that the war is over. There were more humorous moments and just casual'esque conversation. I'm also enjoying getting to see more of the personalities of the seldom heard from bridge officers. I have a crush on Detmer....
The visual were stunning as always. Very cinematic.
I honestly am so happy a Star Trek show is back on the screen, and that's it's so great!!
Jack Ryan (2018)
A great start to a rebooted story!!
Is it perfection? No, of course not. But Krasinski plays a great Jack Ryan. He fits the mold from what we've seen out of Alec Baldwin in Hunt for Red October as well as Harrison Ford to a lesser extent. This first season is very much a origin story of Jack. It also unearths how he and Greer get to know each other.
I like the sneak peak into S2 and am very much looking forward to what they'll have for us next season!
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Naked Now (1987)
A terrible episode to be sure
I mean Data is an android. He can't get "sick". But he does. As we all should know when Gene Roddenberry had his hands in the writing of an episode it wasn't going to be a very good one. Let's just forget this episode ever happened.
Magic for Humans (2018)
Actors and slight of hand.
This is terrible. I'm not sure what is worse. That Netflix thinks that people will fall for this garbage or that people actually are falling for it. The "real people" are of course real, but they are real people getting paid to act on a show.
And some of the tricks are just poorly done. You can tell there are mirrors or that post production was used to complete the trick . I mean it's really bad.
Star Trek: Discovery: What's Past Is Prologue (2018)
Fantastic!
What does it mean when an episode is so good it feels like a finale but there are still 2 episodes left?? This episode, similar to the last 1-2 episodes, has done a great job of explaining some of the "canon" complaints of Trek purists. Even though they didn't have a leg to stand on to begin with, some loose ends getting handled are welcome.
DSC is having the best 1st season of any Trek series ever. The story telling is superb, the characters are well written and supremely well acted. Doug Jones is mind boggling with how he can emote wearing his Saru makeup. The man can ACT!
It's nice to see people who initially, and blindly, jumped on the hate bandwagon finally realizing how incredibly wrong they were and admitting they are enjoying DSC. And the remaining purists are now far outnumbered and keeping to the shadows hugging their "great bird of the galaxy" dolls. DSC is here for the long haul!
Star Trek: Discovery: The Wolf Inside (2018)
Great episode starting to wrap things up
So not a lot of surprises this episode. The Tyler/Voq "mystery" is concluded. We know who the Empress is which was no big surprise. But excellent writing and acting continue in episode 11. Saru's transporter room speech to Voq is as Star Trek as you can get. DSC continues to show that it is Star Trek though and through.
Star Trek: Discovery: Despite Yourself (2018)
A great addition not only to DSC but to Star Trek as a whole.
Episode 10 adds to the commonly held belief that DSC's first season is the best 1st season of any Star Trek series. We continue to learn more about the characters through fantastic story telling. Burnham is still on her trek to redemption although she may not be cognizant of it, but being forced to do things she may not want to in the mirror universe will be a complication for her to work though. Not to mention having to deal with Tyler.
Jason Isaacs continues to give a great performance and has to take a back seat to the Discovey's new captain; Captain "Killy".
Having seen every Trek episode from every series multiple times over I can say without hesitation that the turbolift fight scene is by far the best fight scene in Trek ever. Thankfully we are long past the days of a Shatner stunt double doing a flying butt slam off a wall.
Episode 10 continues to explore the human condition, but not in the traditional sense where it hits you in the face like a pie as was often done quite blatantly in previous iterations of Trek (and there was nothing wrong with that in those series). You may have to look a little deeper to see the meanings, the intent, of the story being told. In doing so we find that DSC is Trek from it's hull to it's warp core.
9-1-1 (2018)
Absolutely terrible
I'm not expecting 100% realism from a TV show but they got practically nothing right about public safety. From the dispatcher, to the police to the fire department. They either didn't do research or didn't care about what they really researched. This show is a travesty. It'll be cancelled before the end of its first season... or should be.
