Evil (2019)
Perfect example of declining standards
This show is fine for what it is. It will hold your attention and is well-acted for the most part. What compelled me to write a review of this show is the disproportionate amount of critical praise this series receives. Is this what qualifies as elite television these days? Yikes. So many of the plot-lines go nowhere and many aspects of the show feel underdeveloped. I'm almost through season 2, and I get more and more irritated with each episode. The kids are brutal, as many reviewers have noted. But so too is the female lead, imo. Unbelievably ditzy and juvenile at times, especially giver her credentials. And she's also a full-blown alcoholic, which has gone completely ignored up until this point. This show is nothing more than early 2000's era FOX episodic fodder. Style over substance, with more praise than is warranted.
Seven Seconds (2018)
Just OK for me. Felt like a missed opportunity.
This series was a bit all over the place for me. Maybe because it was trying for the authenticity angle? A lot of unnecessary subplots and barely believable behaviors by a lot of the main characters. I always find it a tough watch when you don't particularly like or identify with any of the characters. A lot of them felt like over-dramatized caricatures, rather than relatable characters. And yes, I do think the show suffers from some serious over-acting throughout. Certainly a watchable series suitable for Winter-time. But only if you're struggling to find other stuff. This type of genre has been done many times over in a far more watchable and enjoyable manner than this one. But whatever. Standard Netflix fare.
The Crowded Room (2023)
Bad Reviews turned me off. Finally watched and its really good!
Surprised at how universally panned this show was. Reading the critic reviews, you'd think it was hot garbage undeserving of any rational thinking person. Quite the contrary in my opinion! I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
First and foremost, Tom Holland is excellent. I wasn't crazy about his previous dramatic departures (Cherry, Devil All The Time), but he does a phenomenal job in this one. The emotions and range and vulnerability make the character feel real and bring the story to life.
I also thought the supporting cast was solid. I understand the pacing is a bit slow, but I honestly prefer this form of storytelling to the manufactured immediate gratification of all the netflix-esque throwaway shows. There is nothing wrong with a slow-burn noir mystery.
Do yourself a favor and give this one a watch. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good, solid, well-acted show.
Black Bird (2022)
Stunning
Went into this rather blind. Knew is had Ray Liotta in it so assumed it'd be dark, but knew nothing of the plot. Phew man! I was rewarded by one of the most memorable series of the past decade.
Black Bird is an absolutely stellar limited series that will stay with you long after its 6 episodes. Paul Walter Hauser's depiction of Larry Hall is bone chilling and more terrifying than any horror film I've ever watched. I"m a 35 yo man and this legit gave me nightmares. Can't remember the last time a show brought out such visceral and physical reaction in me. At times, my stomach was legitimately in knots. I don't know what awards this show is eligible for, but PWH should win all of them. Taron Egerton also turns in a solid performance and I am impressed by his evolution as an actor.
This series is so immersive and captivating. Everything is top-notch, including the soundtrack. Just watch it!
Elite Short Stories: Omar Ander Alexis: Part 3 (2021)
Aron Piper te amo
Heartbreaking but beautiful. Great acting from Aron Piper. One of the more genuine moments in what is typically a ridiculous show. Was caught off guard but in a good way.
Time Trap (2017)
Laughably Bad Hot Garbage
Ssssssstop it. Seriously. Stop it. This can't be a real movie.
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Well Acted yet Pointless Ultraviolence
Well acted movie, but story is so dark and depressing it's hard to watch. Has more in common with a Rob Zombie movie like Devils Rejects than a modern drama. Strikes me as a movie that the young actors signed on to in hopes of broadening their reach for future roles and projects. Just don't understand why this movie needed to be made or how anybody could enjoy watching it.
