A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017)
Just a Patrick Harris vehicle
Tried to watch the second series of this show and just had to switch off due to both Patrick Harris mugging at the camera, the awful cgi and jokes. I didn't find any. As for the girl in the pink dress, anyone remember violet elizElizafrom the just William tv show??
The Terror (2018)
Wonderful Cast& Story
Had to write a review of this TV Show, amidst the great TV drama's been made this past years, the production stands out as a precious jewel. The story set in the far north of Canada is known, what this cast and crew do is bring the monsterous odds these men faced. I ask myself at times would the young men of the British & Irish Isles today do any better, I fear not. These men where of a bred not often seen. The obeyed the chain of command without demur.
But back to the TERROR. What a production, full of the best character actors from the Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The leads play their parts with such stoacisim, the crew with such a stillness. Mr. Good sir sceen in the tent in Eps. 7 is beyond compare. The sets and design must be mentioned are of the highest standard. The only pity is this maybe a one series show due to the source material. Special mention must go to Jared Harris, Ian Hart and so many more.
Just great story telling from the first to the last frame.
Darkest Hour (2017)
Awful tripe
I knew from the moment the forming of the British Govt. was being called New Administration we where in trouble here. Old man has a really hard act to follow but he can't even get Churchill's voice right. I found myself drifting back to the glorious Albert Finney, Vanessa Redgrave and the peerless Ronnie Barker. What a version of a slightly later story that is. Here the King was even badly played, didn't Joe Wright have a quick look back a "His Speech". The history is dodgy throughout. I know WWII movies are Oscar folder and actor's line up to be in them but has English film making got only 2 topics this and cockney wide boys. Where are the young film makers that will tackle modern subjects, Britain's relationship with Europe is this century for one might be a start.
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Movie of beauty, catch it slowly, stop it and go back , view the scene again..
Loved this movie, Day-Lewis and Stowe are so good when acting off one another in close up like after the Cameron massacre. Day-Lewis as gives us such a tight performance. His playing against been an English type is as per usual. He does not seem able to take up the battle for the land of his father in any work. What happened to him walking and talking to the Celts of Western Europe has a profound effect on his craft, as one born in London at about the same time but brought back "Home" so often I never can recall ever feeling anything but not English. It's the strangest belonging. An Englishman can be British, an Irishman can be nothing else. This forms such moments in "The Mohicans" when there are stretches of silence between Stowe and Day-Lewis. Mann's making (rather than) directing is not like any other movie I know of his. He trusts the cast to play their parts with such honesty and the gorgeous New York Hudson Valley background, the colours, sounds, the Bobcat looking at Stowe are a delight, are a full star in their own right. This movie is not like anything that is made now, maybe it too is the last hurrah of a by gone age just like the Mohican. Watch, watch it slowly, catch as much as you can and come back to it again some night you are on your own. I think it may become one of your all time favorite movies. Enjoy
Secret Beyond the Door... (1947)
The Cast are wonderful
With Fritz Lang. Michael Redgrave, Joan Bennett and the supporting cast this movie starts off great. Miss Bennett is so gorgeous, the leading ladies of today must be so jealous while the casting directors must wonder where did all the beauty go, Redgrave is as good as ever I have seen. I know the script can get a bit long toothed but that's just because current films don't rely on story driven movies. Natalie Schafer is such a scene steal-er. I loved this movie. Could not recommend it enough if you have a cold March evening and there is nothing ON TV, just go and bring yourself back to the mid 40's, the fashions, the set dressing will do it and enjoy the masters at movie making doing what they do best.. LOVED IT...
