The Regime (2024)

This series is a bland swipe at Europe
4 March 2024
This is what we've come to expect from HBO now. It's basically Canadian quality.

The show tries to be funny but it falls flat. Then it manages to fall even flatter.

The acting is tedious and the story is a distorted mess with nothing to say but it thinks it's intelligent.

I can't imagine how this got greenlit other than at the pitch they said it's anti European and also said something about dictatorships. Which is strange since the existing dictatorships we all live in now are failing so they're alarmed that other voices are taking over to fix the mess that has been caused by every western leader in the past 4 decades.

HBO used to be amazing. Now it's deserving it's reputation for making utter garbage.

It's definitely better than the score shown
28 January 2024
I'm not sure why this has a low rating. It's actually very well shot, the acting is very good, and while slow it's correctly paced for the genre.

The story is pretty rudimentary but it's handled well. The director does a great job framing the scenes and the setting is really beautiful.

This isn't an action movie so I guess the low ratings are from people who expected a man in his 70s to be doing Jason Statham level fight scenes?

It's a hitman story and it's a good one. The villain is played well too and the story does crash together at the end in an interesting way.

If you like hitman movies and appreciate slower paced, character driven and building stories you'll likely enjoy this.

It's just not a good movie at all
6 January 2024
The acting is pretty bad because I don't think the directors did much to motivate the actors to convey any kind of character. They just deliver lines and the flow and pacing are very clunky which makes it near impossible to sit through.

There are some obvious amateurish mistakes like improper establishing shots and there is no consistency to the depth or framing so it doesn't pull you into any kind of vision, it's just filming a story they wrote.

I wanted to like this but it's not good. And yes the 3 10/10 reviews are obviously not real.

There is no good reason to recommend this so I can't.

Great movie. Suspicious number of bad reviews tbh
8 July 2023
I looked at all these bad reviews and saw a pattern. This definitely angered certain community groups both for it's depiction of Americans as good guys and for where it was filmed and their laws.

So do not trust the reviews on here attacking it.

The movie is well paced and a great action movie. It follows an operator who finds himself outed and known for having been involved in a large scale sabotage (something like the US blowing up Nord Stream 1) and he needs to find his way out.

This is about as close to The Covenant as it gets. The very basic premise but where this one shines is it has the right kind of lead actor and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

If you're whining about realism then you're not watching a movie for the right reasons.

If you miss great Hollywood action and want a break from the special interest lobbiest's preachy garbage we're forced to suffer through then give this a shot. Wpww.

I did it. I watched the whole thing
11 May 2023
I made the decision to be the one to actually watch this.

It's worse than expected and I had severely low expectations.

There is nothing redeeming about this. The acting is wooden, there's so many leaps in logic it's genuinely concerning. This should be called Based on Cleopatra.

The Roman men are portrayed in a comical way that really shows the creators have a crippling bias against Europeans.

They threw in some weird fight training that would never have happened and some dance stuff...for some reason.

The lead actress is perfect in that she's boring, bad at acting, and looks about as much like Cleopatra as everyone in the world who saw the previews has already stated.

Netflix should give everyone a free month for having produced this wreck.

It just doesn't work
25 September 2022
Guy Pearce should easily win a best actor award for this. He gives it his all.

All the actors do. Maybe the director's strength is his ability to get good acting out of his actors?

He shot this wrong. There wasn't any gore or observed threat. The movie has real guts for a solid creepy horror movie but it pulled it's punch. This was more of a slap and not a hard one.

It would have been much shorter too. One seasoned producer would have made a major difference in this movie.

But Guy Pearce makes it work still. He's that good in this. The other actors try but he stands out. David Lynch should work with him.

Watch this without expectations of greatness.

His ex wife is connected and this is all made up
2 September 2022
This is such a disgusting and transparent attack on a man who ditched his wife.

The footage is so twisted and fictional I'm surprised this guy hasn't sued these people for everything they have.

So women who were into kinky sex dated an actor who got into it after leaving his controlling wife? Big deal.

There are millions of people who use ropes and have weird fantasties.

This all just happened to come out after he ditched his badly aging wife? Come on. The all ex gf's he didn't commit to are "coming forward"?

I really hope this guys sues them all. His aunt has well documented mental problems. She fit right in with this insane hit piece.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky deserves no attention
21 April 2022
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Bill Browder, the list goes on...all thieves.

This movie is far too kind to Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

The level of depravity and deviant behaviour he's known for is limitless.

Phenomenal new show. A new real spaghetti western!!!
27 March 2022
This is better than 99% of the shows put out in the past 5 years.

The pacing is perfect. The framing is at par with the best movies you've seen. The characters are complete people and not just serving a plot.

The plots that exist are well written and unravel at a very good pace.

The actors are obviously having a blast.

I can't recommend this show enough. I hope it's on for a long time!

This is really bad
25 February 2022
It's bad writing with creepy historical revisionism.

Fyi women have always been considered bad luck at sea and were never once seen on a raid in the entirety of the history of Nordic people.

I guess they just want this to play for the fraction of the % of the audience who are women?

It's really too bad.

Vikings first 3 seasons were great.

Then the agenda types got their hooks in and it's been downhill ever since.

Historically accurate
29 January 2021
It's odd to read Anglo's in America arguing that this is not realistic because it doesn't align with their History channel brainwashing.

I've even seen deluded Murkins asking about the hysterical myth dreamed up for the television show Vikings about female Nordic warriors or even queens lol

This move captures the harsh reality of Nordic Paganism and how it clashed with the onset of Christianity. It does it in a very artful way. If you can't appreciate the art in violence then this movie will put you off. It's not for weaker constitutions.

The story is simple: a warrior's path to Hell.

The acting is amazing. The framing is perfect for Scandinavian noir.

Armchair historians who have been fed nonsensical ideas about what a "Viking" was and ache for a 300 style narrative won't enjoy this. It's not the kind of movie where you'll get quotes from it tattooed on you because your grandmother was from Denmark.

It's a rare piece that serves as NWR 's best. I think it takes at least being in rural Scandinavia for a bit to really appreciate this.

Extremely well made
19 December 2020
Russia is making Hollywood look juvenile by comparison when they make films like this. This movie is stunning and the story is extremely engaging. I recommend this to everyone. It's much more classical and well made than any American movie from the past 10 years.

Misleading trailer and very bad acting and story
8 August 2020
This seemed like a college made movie. Like something your friend would have made and forced you to watch and you'd say it was good but really it was just the effort you'd be applauding. It's mind boggling that this came from a union director. The acting is terrible. Just awful. The editing too. The shot composure is inconsistent. The story is outright laughably cliche. I only gave it a 3 because of the marketing. They did a great job making this look like it was a real movie but really this is junk.

I wanted to like it
12 May 2020
This movie is a subject matter I like so I gave it a shot but wow.

My biggest issue is Mickey Rourke. He fumbles through his lines while reading them off a teleprompter. He's wearing fake eye lashes on one eye and has manicured nails. He looks ridiculous.

The filmmakers must have really struggled with him. They had an idea in mind and they went for it. In many scenes the other actors give it their all which is why I gave this a 4.

The effects aren't great. I can forgive that. The action is okay. I can forgive that.

Mickey Rourke ruins the whole thing. He obviously can't even memorize a few lines now. I hope they didn't pay him too much. He clearly didn't prepare and was probably a nightmare to work with.

Embarrassing
11 February 2020
I made it through the whole thing. That's my best one line review for this horrible train wreck.

I get what they're hoping to achieve. They want to make it some sleuths uncovering a huge scandal but they can't dress up the garbage enough and I wasn't the only one rolling their eyes at the screening I attended.

"What world is this in?" was what I heard two rows in front of me. Followed by everyone chuckling.

Damian Lewis looks more like Mike Myers as Fat Bastard than Rob Ford and the drug dealers they had in this looking like morality heroes was quite funny. I guess being from Toronto and lived through this is funny to see how desperate the filmmaker was to alter the story. Yes he smoked crack. The people who sold the video smoked it with him and sold it to him. They came to this country and hurt it as much as possible. Yet in this movie they're portrayed as good guys.

It's sad to see something like this. Rob Ford said no to unions and even after his death they're still out for blood. Thankfully this mess is the best they can come up with.

Everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Possibly the best Viking movie ever made
2 April 2017
This story baffles anyone confined to the restrictive and inaccurate western misinformation with regards to vikings/varangians. The story is told in perfect segments outlining the story of a Kiev Rus (Scandinavian founders of Russia) reclaiming his title. If somewhat familiar the context is derivative but of other stories of similar scope. The characters, costumes, and design all feature ancient European artifacts the Varangians were well known to have recovered during raids. The authenticity of the costumes makes other viking related material seem juvenile. If you compare this to the current Anglo/Keltoi created Vikings TV show you'll see. Vikings did in fact not have hipster haircuts and manscaped beards etc nor is there a single shred of evidence anywhere that viking women even existed let alone went on raids. If you love your Nordic history this movie is for you. Don't let the rating steer you away. Enjoy!

It's a decent action movie. Judge it accordingly
4 August 2012
I read the posted reviews posted about this one and they're massively wrong.

I'll keep mine brief:

The movie is rooted in the action and the characters and story are plot devices aside from the lead. The staples are all there (accent heavy thugs, withdrawn lead with a moral dilemma, back story dealing with his obsession with the female lead) and the female lead is gorgeous. I liked that it never resorted to objectifying her.

This is a hit-man movie. It's not aiming for realism over entertainment but it's not out right silly either. The shooting scenes are well done. The fighting scenes could use a little work since there were points where the use of a stunt double was too obvious. It's a hit-man in Prague playing sides in a Russian mafia war. That's about all you need to know.

Once the action gets going another player/hit-man is introduced. Dolph Lundgren steals his scenes with a great character that could have been developed more but is fun as it is.

A more menacing bad guy would have been nice. There are quite a few nasty Russians in this but it's all implied. Some scenes dedicated to showing them as bad people would have helped establish them as such. Don't just allude to him torturing someone. You've got the R rating so stretch your legs Mr Kaufman and let's see the guy tied to the ceiling getting killed so I know the guy doing it is more than just an angry Russian.

I gave this 8/10 because I judged it based on reception as a fan of action movies. If you like movies about professional killers you can put this on and not be disappointed. It's not Collateral but it's still fun to watch. Go into it remembering that it's a straight to DVD/VOD action movie and have a good time.

I look forward to seeing what the team behind this does next since this is a big improvement over their previous efforts. As long as they keep learning and striving for more their next movie could be something very cool to see.

Pros: *good shooting scenes especially with the long range guns *good acting *great locations *coherent and easy to follow plot *fun characters

Cons: *the script had weaknesses in the dialogue *the shots could have been more stylized *the texture of the film should have been adjusted by the DOP to reflect *the location and set pieces. I mentioned Collateral: compare the club scenes specifically to see what I mean. *the gun play (too many machine guns! don't double fist pistols!) *underdeveloped characters

8/10 for an action movie
