Sins of Our Mother (2022)
Should be titled Sins of a religious fanatic
It's always because of one crazy aspired self proclaimed cult leader that time and time again the poor victims and their families get sucked into these sad real life horrors. How powerful are our beliefs yet we are not ever taught how to safeguard these, to know when we are manipulated and remove ourselves.
This short series is a thorough depiction of how vulnerable humans can be and the awful consequences that are brought about by trusting blindly one source of "truth" without self-reflections and discovering one's own blindspots.
It's the second series that I watched relating to cults that were spin offs from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I begin to wonder what the reasons are behind why some of these LDS followers deviate from their original faith and grow into monsters? Perhaps to active are their imagination and this quote from the series Severance kind of says it all: "The good news is hell is just the product of a morbid human imagination. The bad news is whatever humans can imagine, they can usually create."
Echoes (2022)
Look at the rating of individual episodes not the overall for this one!
I struggled to decide whether to invest my time in this series because the overall score is below a 6. Generally if I find a divide in opinions then I tend to go for it because if there are at least half the people like it enough to rate 8+ I believe it's worth the risk. This series certainly didn't disappoint and I'm so glad I have pressed play!
Most people judge a movie by the rating but with series it's wise to look at the overall trend of the ratings in each episode. I find all 7 were rated 7+ which is much higher than the overall score. This shows that those who may have only watched a few minutes of the first episode and dislike it tend to ONLY vote on the overall score. The individual episodes score would reflect much better the actual quality of the series because those scores should generally be from people who bothered to actually watch enough to make a fair assessment.
With this thought I went for it and it's a good investment of time: I like the kind of shows that make me think and be a detective and the twists in this series are not so predictable and I genuinely wanted to find out what's going to happen next. It'd hard to know who to root for which is the whole point here.
If you want pure entertainment and dislike getting confused then this is probably not for you. If you want to challenge yourself and see this interesting story unfolds then I'd highly recommend it. If you still get confused then why not rewind and watch with English subtitles and it will give you the clarity to understand. I know because that's what I did.
Rating a series low because you are lazy to work it out for yourself who is who seems pretty unfair to eneryone: the writer producer actors actresses and the audience.
UPDATE: if you rate my review not helpful then you are missing the point of my review: I'm genuinely trying to help you decide whether this is worth your time.
BigBug (2022)
French humour that can only be appreciated if you understand the culture
If you expect a real storyline that will develop as the movie goes on then you maybe disappointed. Watch this like you are there with the humans and see the beautiful ideas behind this then you are much more likely to enjoy this futuristic dystopian portrait of human life in a robot world.
Sentinelle (2021)
If you hate slow burn, don't watch!
To those who rated 3 or below probably prefer the typical American soldier movies like Hurt Locker. This French flick is about trauma and someone being in the dark place who couldn't break through so in this sense it's way more than an action movie. The acting of the lead Ogla is solid, it's not through her action that we get to see her struggles. It's in her eyes and expressions, that tells of the burden of war on her.
French film typically tries to relate the experience of the character to their behaviour and go deep into such areas so rating this low without understanding the culture in which the story is based would be totally biased.
Yes the storyline is simple but I feel this was done on purpose so that we don't get distracted from the main character's inner state. She was so broken and the system around her was also totally broken which left her no choice but to do the unthinkable to level the playing field out a little.
Glad to have watch this on a Saturday afternoon!
The Perfection (2018)
Imperfection in the "Perfect" music world
Those who rated 1-3 obviously missed the messages hidden in the film. Or how the protagonists felt about their "perfect" musician world.
It is not for the fainted heart nor for those who are just looking for a scary mindless movie to kill time. Don't waste your time if you like heroes movies because there are none in this movie.
Try to stay open minded before your judge any characters in this movie and let the twists take you where you didn't know you will go. Creativity is key here.
Definitely one for those who want to watch something different even weird but with solid acting and unexpected plot!
