Hunter Killer (2018)
Pleasant Surprise
I love a submarine film, but won't lie, aside from 300, I am not a huge Gerard Butler fan. I have to say though, that I was very pleasantly surprised by both the film and Butler's performance. A film in the vain of The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide, this was a Cold War'esque film, with a more than reasonable plot, good cinematography and decent performances. Perhaps not as tense as Crimson Tide, which to be fair is a difficult film to compete with given the performances of Hackman and Washington, it was all the same a good watch. So for those who enjoy an good action film that includes a submarine, it's worth a viewing.
Dune (2021)
Delicious Cinematography
People will draw comparisons to David Lynch's 1984 film of the Frank Herbert classic Sci-fi novel, but these films should be judged independently. I believe the 1984 version was given a harsh time by critics, and although of its time, I still believe it to be a classic Sci-fi of its day. Denis Villeneuve's adaptation, I found to be rich, along with the enormous visuals, great CGI and dramatic film score. The cast was for me perfect, with standout performances by Rebecca Ferguson and Timothée Chalamet (a true up and coming star to my mind (see The King)). Villeneuve clearly stated that the book cannot be justified by one single film, so one hopes that Legendary Films payroll the sequel (or second part) quickly. A sweeping, labyrinth of political intrigue and feudal posturing, means that I would gladly watch this film again and again. Roll on part 2.
The Great Wall (2016)
Enjoyable Jaunt
I never quite understand people who berate films like this. It was vibrant, humorous at times, the effects were great and the storyline simple, yet enjoyable. It wasn't a complex plot, but then in real terms nor was Star Wars. The acting was presentable and you wanted Matt Damon's, Pedro Pascal's and Tian Jing's characters to win through. Loved the colourful costumes and scenery, a delight on the eyes. It was fantasy, treat is as such and enjoy.
Life (2017)
Watchable
Is it the best film ever made... no. Is it the worst film... no. It is however, a watchable sci-fi ditty. Though the characters may lack a little depth, the acting is fair enough and the plot is reasonable. Yes, there's flaws, but it's sci-fi, you're allowed flaws. You're always going to get nerds dissing films like this, but I didn't feel that it was and hour and fifty minutes wasted.
