Murder in Provence (2022)
Sumptuous series where the murder is almost unnecessary...
I've only seen the first episode, on ABC iView, and loved it immediately. Being set in Aix-en-Provence, with that gorgeous backdrop, is good enough, but the wit and dry, subtle, humour lifts this up above most crime shows.
In fact, I found that the murder investigation was the least interesting part of the story. What I really loved was the relationship between the two main characters, and the respectful way they all spoke to each other.
I didn't know the writer, until I looked up the show, but already had the feeling it had been written by a woman.
Watch it for the fun, for the views, and for the relationships, but don't expect any brilliant detective work or crime solving.
Dalva (2022)
An empowering film -don't avoid it due to the difficult subject matter.
The subject matter of the film is surely the most horrendous type of abuse, yet it's filmed in such a way that there is no excess, no unnecessary musical cues to break our hearts, sentimentality, or overly dramatised scenes.
It's a film stripped bare of non-essentials, which gives it a kind of peaceful quality. The film is almost entirely carried by Zelda Samson, as Dalva, and she does it to perfection. Again, nothing to excess -no over-acting- the subject is dramatic enough on its own.
I found it disturbing, upsetting, but totally hypnotic, watching this young child discover what it's like to be a child, to have friends, and learn that what happened TO her wasn't her fault.
Emmanuelle Nicot has certainly made an impact with her first film. I hope she continues in this way, and she'll surely have a wonderful career ahead. The same goes for her young star, Zelda Samson.
Congratulations to all involved!
Grey's Anatomy: Song Beneath the Song (2011)
Cringe-worthy
I'm a new-comer to Grey's Anatomy, so I've been watching back-to-back episodes on DVD, and, apart from a few weak plot turns and questionable relationships, I've thoroughly enjoyed the series. It's gripping, the soundtrack is subtle and usually fits what's going on, and it's been an all-round entertaining show - until this episode.
The first song I tolerated, because I thought it was a one-off, but then it went on and on, and I was flabbergasted that the producers and network allowed this important episode to be ruined. As another reviewer said, it was like Glee's Anatomy - only without the great talent. I have no idea what actually happened during the episode, because there was no story to follow without this ludicrous singing, so I kept fast-forwarding through all of the songs, until I just gave up on it and went to the next episode. Every episode after this, I was dreading that the writers would be having another breakdown.
One of television's worst moments in time.
