Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
A masterpiece
Even by Bo's incredibly high standard, this delivers. A feast of interesting perspectives and heartfelt emotion. A masterpiece of production that will have you thinking about it for days.
RED (2010)
Dialogue is appalling
nothing makes the dire dialogue of this film more evident than the collection of excellent actors assembled to deliver it.
i don't often comment on this site, but i urge anyone about to sit down to this film to do themselves a favour and avoid it at all costs. for the first twenty minutes, it sounded like this script had been written by a child. every line was delivered with an attempt to disguise it's misgivings with added sincerity, which only went further to emphasise the lack of quality in the written words. the fight scenes are ridiculous (the film's only redeeming feature) but even these you don't feel are part of the film's self-deprecating irony. a stupid, god-awful film. avoid.
V for Vendetta (2005)
Stay in the shallow end
I don't usually post user comments. Indeed, the only thing that prompts me to do so is reading those of others, and i can't but be amazed that superlatives such as 'beautiful' or 'moving' have been used. Please, do not read too much into this film. It is good, but it is superficial and (for want of a better word) American, on every level.
The whole thing smacks of comic book (which is what it is, granted) so don't go looking for commentary on society as a whole, religious doctrine, or the argument of surveillance and civil rights. You won't find it.
Or at least, you shouldn't.
The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005)
A League of Gentle Jokes
I am a massive fan of the LoG. I thought the first two series provided some of the best comedy this country has ever seen and the third series, though different, was wonderfully dark and imaginative. The thought of seeing Tubbs, Edward and Briss on the big screen made July 3 something to wait for. Yet, somewhere, it all went horribly wrong. The writers had no story and no real ideas. The part set in old England showed the glimmers of genius that we know the League are capable of but these scenes did not fit well with the film. Geoff provided the best of too few, largely poor jokes and Lipp and Briss's performances were big let-downs. If you love the League, save yourself the time and money and watch episodes from the TV series again. And again. A massive disappointment.
