Carlos Ghosn: The Last Flight (2021)
1 hour of Tabloid Journalism
My mistake to watched this with higher expectation. The perspective of the documentary can be : A boy who wanted to prove his worth by his capability and not his background nor the people's acceptance, but eventually landed a similar fate with his father. A man who started from nothing (or really?) charmed his way up to be picked by Renault, subsequently got his head tangled in his own cloud nine and unfortunately mired in the melding political and business affair that was already a rickety alliance from the start.
This documentary did something like that but in touch n go method. Yes he's charming some people like him, then he did this then he said that. I get it, avoiding too much dwelling in his personality may be perceived as bias. Then elaborating from his perspective and actions as a CEO or culture clashes? He cut costs; shut down factory and terminated people. He didn't show up for important festival. He is a gaikokujin. Really? How about him going through all Nissan's financial paperwork and found that Nissan invested in many failing business, or appointing seniors based on seniority and not capability? I could go on but that's how a lot of wasted potential content for this documentary that could have not only appeal to the sarcastic bitter corporate rats but also to the layman.
'Chi chi' de ai (2017)
Decent movie to watch during free time
It's actually 5.5, rounded up to 6. I love the casting of the two main characters which are Didi and Kouzi(Button). I am especially impressed by Hsu Dee (Didi). Her acting is by no means on a par with those Oscar- award winners, but the delivery of the emotions was sincerely felt. Perhaps the main reason could be the comparatively bad acting by the rest, which made it quite difficult for me to not cringe when they are their lines. The plot twist is unexpected, it kinda reminds me of Inception's layered dreams. However, it's not really clear whether the dreamer and her "kinds" are extraterresterial species or just circus clowns. Maybe it's just me.
Due to the low cost budget, the cinematography seems immature and hard to appeal to the audience, if they are not the Hsu Dee's fans. The transition of the music from upbeat to melancholic is too sudden, it could be done better. Overall, it is a typical Korean or Chinese drama, where the person either died of some kind chronic illness, accident, or murdered. Same goes with the choice of musics too. But hey, the target audience is those who are also like the Chinese/Korean drama so that could explain it.
Wonder Woman (2017)
A better DC movie
Let's start with the good bits:
Gal is amazing throughout the movie especially in expressing her confusion, anger, appreciation (to the ice-cream, yass Gal), and sadness. The reason I mention this is due to the comparison with her partner, Chris Pine's performance which I will mention later. Besides the charming actress, the movie managed to deliver the "cool" factors that are expected by the audience with all the martial arts choreography, the firing guns, the bombing and the destruction gave the kicking impacts that I wanted. I certainly did not see it coming when Ares' identity was revealed. The plot twist got me impressed because the absence of supernatural being in large part of the earlier scenes ,besides Diana, got me questioned the existence of Ares. The ending of the movie was not perfect but nice, as Diana acknowledged her inability to stop mankind from making destructive decisions but addressed that she will do her best to contribute to the world peace because she believes in love is the solution to mankind's war.
The bad cookies:
Chris Pine is cute and that's it. He's sub-par performance as Gal's partner did not help Gal's effort in creating the chemistry between the two characters. His problem is that he seems to carry the same expression or tone throughout the entire movie, and it looks worse when juxtaposed with Diana. The romance between them therefore seems forced. I only teared up when Steve died because of Diana's grievance plus the flashback. Ugh the flashback, Steve's confession sounds unnecessary and insincere, wasting all the build-up scenes of sparks between them. The big bad guy was funny. I get it that the intention is to show Ares is the deceptive villain who hid in plain sight and prey on the weak humans, but it will be better if Ares is shown as a faceless form to create the powerful mystical impression than taking on Patrick's face. I couldn't stop laughing and even cheering for Patrick to fight. The background musics are very DC-like, nothing impressive but not bad either.
Sacrilege (2017)
Those who voted 4 stars gotta be kidding me
Bad. Bad bad bad. Ignore those 4, 5 stars rating reviews because I'm pretty sure they are paid to do that. I gave two instead one because the main character tried her best to save the movie but when that Dr GhostBuster came into the picture, her effort just fell into the toilet bowl of circus. Her acting is just so terrible I thought she was joking or she was a fraud. Actings bad. Cinematography bad. Sound effects bad. Expect cheap jumpscare. Everything is so bad I started wondering whether if this is a result of a project made by university students. I guess this is a low-budget movie, so all the more reasons need to work harder to produce better quality.
Lights Out (2016)
Fast and furious horror.
I jumped and screamed throughout the movies even though I know what to expect at every turn. James Wan didn't waste a lot of time introducing the sweet family to create moods. Right into the first 15 minutes, someone died because he refused to listen to his staff's warning. It is from James Wan so I expect something better, like The Conjuring 1. I shouldn't compare both of the movies so I will try to stick my mind on the straight rational of looking to Lights Out.
Lights Out itself is like Mcdonald chicken, it gives you exactly what you want on the plate in express; you want horror, boom give you darkness, you want to scream, boom give you long skinny messy hair depressed chicken; you want scarier, no explanation of the scary chick's background and no showing of her face. If you prefer express horror, then this should be for you. But if you like some mysteries that build the mood then this is too rough for your sensitive taste. Since everything is presented in express way, superficiality is inevitable. The boyfriend, the siblings binding moments, the mother- kids moments and the pathetic police officers are few things which have the potential to be develop into something meaningful, but they were brushed off on the surface, resulting in blandness which depends on jumpscares to earn points. James Wan, please don't fall into the Hollywood typical scary movies production, where gory scenes and bloody actions are the center attraction of the movies.
There are some plot holes that I am lazy to analyse and sure others won't let it go. I would really like to give 7 for Lights Out but James Wan, you are better than this. My friend gave it 3/10, but he said my screams made it 10/10.
Chappie (2015)
It's a decent movies for those who likes to cry.
I really expect something out of this movie since the trailer looks nice and I tell you what, it is good but not for me.
It's the typical trick; showing the humane side of the mechanistic robot we are used to and that they are able to show sympathy and compassionate easily won over the audience. Chappie even have 3 parents and formed bonds with them which later will make the audience cry when in the end the "mama" was shoot (albeit resurrected later in robotic form). I rolled my eyes when Chappie said "Why human do this?" *chuckled* Dear Chappie, your consciousness is human; you talk and walk like human and you are even dumber than human. I am reluctant to be tricked by this kind of cheap trick. Attaching an emotional factor in a robot, that's funny. I like the visual effect and also the funny accent by the gangsta(they really try so hard to sound like badass.)
Dracula Untold (2014)
Great action movie.
I laughed when I read the reviews. Sure the idea and expectations you had in your mind affect your mood and perception while watching the movie. I expect actions and fantasy and cool superpowers which are fulfilled in this movie. I have no idea of the history of this movie based on (which had provoked so many people) so I was spared from the possible irksome moments while playing Dracula Untold. The plot is simple and decent (yes, it's kinda predictable) but what made it different from the genre alike movies is that I am satisfied with the 1 and half hours spent watching the plot twists and conflicts took place. They are well developed which not like others that I'd watched as if they are rushing to get to the end and that's it. And oh, yeah it has few place where it's kinda illogical(sigh...I would have rate it 10/10).
I will try to read the history of the people in the movie later but so far, I am really happy spending 1 and half hour watching it.
Song of the Sea (2014)
Should give it a try and watch with little ones
I like the drawing style!
Before watching this I warn you that the plot is very simple, thus if you are the kind who demand a complete, complicated and exciting plots then you will be let down by this bed-time story. A lot of plot-holes that left unexplained; many riddles left unanswered.
Witches, owls, seals, a dog, fairies and selkies (at first I thought it was selfies....)and all that. Great and very suitable for little ones to watch, and of course the adults too. Drop all your logical sense and judgement of how a story should start and how it should end. This is about a journey so take the ride and enjoy the lullaby of the song. Song of the sea reminds me the feeling of listening to my imaginations' I used to have at bed-time. Oh, how I miss it.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Bleh...
Perhaps at times it was produced this kind of movie was considered good and I watched this last week.
Anyway, the concept, the idea is good but it is poorly developed and I wasn't even scared. I laughed all way till the end because it felt like more of a comedy. Since the beginning, obviously the works are lazily executed. Of all the monsters, they conveniently chose zombies. Why? It's easier compare to the banshee, giant snake, creepy-faced ballerina etc. Huh?
Another thing I don't understand is that they mentioned they are doing the ritual for the Ancient One. Could they please explain who exactly is this Ancient One( the gods?), are there more than one given that many facilities were built, and how come the facilities were ruined (ruined by what?). See? They just shoved that hard bullcrap of Ancient One without bothering to explain what is actually going on.
I recommend to watch it online, not worth to download. Just don't.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
No magic. No chemistry. plain robots.
I have no idea why I'm the only one among my group of friends who felt this movie doesn't deserve a thumb-up. I yawned all the way till the end, fell asleep for a couple of minutes.
The story is seems to be forcedly connected. I know they are all relevant but the bind of the connection is not that strong. it's like a boring bed time story. Simply jumping from one to another without bothering to develop, even just scratching the surface, personality or in depth of the characters.
The chemistry buildup was not cultivated. Lack of chemistry or connection between the actors. Witty little chitchat doesn't do enough favor to cover the obvious detached actors to their character.
Trying very hard to be impressive; the battling, the kicking, the punching, the heroes and the lines.
All and all,a lazy, superficial gimmicks.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Worth my time.
From the title alone you know it has something to do with secret agents so before watching better expect some clichés.
Everything in the movie is good, except Harry's/Galahad's death in front of the church. In my opinion, his abrupt death is too difficult for me to swallow the fact. I was convinced that he just faked his death (a usual twist in movies) until the closing credits rolls up I realized he's really dead. Besides that, the ending is also not that satisfying. Too clean. World is saved. That's it.
The antagonist, Valentine, is a joke almost comical. In fact, nearly every scenes in this movie are satirical. Albeit his ruthless disregard to human life, his solution to global warming nevertheless is practical and creative (I mean in this movie, not applicable to real life). Depopulate human via sim card, thus enable to save the earth from being destroyed by the atrocious and ungrateful species living in it. Almost all presidents and royals agreed to deal with him. I say Valentine is not that bad at all, he's just trying his best to save the world, in a different way.
Overall, this movie is just another case of saving world from bad guy by the unsung secret agents. It's nice but am not STRONGLY recommending you this movie. Perhaps you could download it online.....
P.S. I Love You (2007)
Rubbish...
Are you kidding me? How could they even come up with such a trashy film? Totally ruin the novel. First of all, Hillary Swank is not fit for the character. Second thing is, obviously the movie was done and edited in a rush and not polished properly. So rough, so raw so undone. No depth of all the characters and everything in the movie. I am so surprised to find the rate is 7.0! I expected it to be like 4 or below than that. If you are queuing outside shopping malls, restaurants or public toilets and got bored, I recommend you to watch this movie. Definitely no efforts needed to digest, to understand, to cry or to look out for any philosophical quotes in it.
Insidious (2010)
Worth your time
Insidious is totally in my list of favourite horror movie. I will not say that this will be the greatest horror movie ever but the cinematography is great and makes the whole mundane plot seems interesting and manage to crap the hell out of me.
I hate it when some so-called horror movies use old cheap tricks like the creepy music or sound effects to compensate their poor performance. I watched many scary movies and Insidious is the one that really made it sound and seems so real that it allows audience relate to it. I was expecting to see some people died in horrible way where their guts and bloods are everywhere and floor splashed with red tomato juices. You'll never have to see that kind of scene in here, they keep it as close as possible for you to relate in your real life and in your room while you are struggling to sleep.
Lucy (2014)
Just another movie to kill time...
For those who want to kill their time, this might be one for you because it is pure nonsense, not much emotional scenes involved so no tissues needed. I'm no scientist, just a student but I just found the whole plot and lines are totally ridiculous, bullcrap and breaking all laws of physics that learn in school (even common sense). Some find it fascinating because it satisfy their imagination of possessing super-natural ability. I know this is just for entertainment but at least Luc Besson, can't you do your homework a little bit? Or maybe try to refer to actual scientists? The effects are not that great,I like the actions scenes though and of course, Scarlett Johansson. 3 stars for Scarlett Johansson and 2 stars for the entertainments.
