Dark Waters (2019)
Outstanding essential viewing
A mind stretched by new experience never returns to its original size.
As a piece of entertainment this movie is beautifully crafted, but this story unfolds into a far more compelling tale of corporate greed and egregious
wrongdoing that is sickening to the core.
The brilliant cast help deftly portray events with the help of a great screenplay and sensitive direction.
I stayed away from this film initially in fear of the subject matter being too heavy and its probably wise to pick the right time to view, but I urge anyone reading this to give this movie your time. Put it on your playlist to comeback to if required but it is a must see film.
Gangs of London (2020)
Slick and violent
Consistent violence masks an inconsistent plot filled with holes and flawed logic. Despite being in the guise of a tough gritty gangster drama, in reality it's a soppy dull melodrama almost saved by the distraction of gruesome action sequences. The cadence of silliness interspersed with violence is not quite rapid enough to help you forget the flimsy premise this show is built around.
I found myself either listlessly rolling my eyes or squeamishly turning away without enough in between to start caring about the characters or suspend disbelief long enough to engage with the weak storyline.
If you are looking for something visual, violent and void of virtue, it's a time killer.
Dexter (2006)
Do the math
A series about a serial killer where the real crime is being committed by the writers. I loved season 1, it was unique, quirky, great acting and well scripted... a solid 9 stars from me.
It's been an excruciating demise however to make this great premise unwatchable, by my basic math if I started at 9 stars and take 1 star off for every season of decline, the most recent season is a solid 1 star, where to from here? Please stop.
Retfærdighedens ryttere (2020)
Yes, yes and yes
The best movie to come out of 2020 by country mile. Mads is as brilliant and compelling as ever and the supporting cast bring warmth and humour at every turn. Every friend I've recommended this to has had the same reaction of adoration.
The King's Man (2021)
So much potential squandered
My eyes hurt from all the skyward rolling, a clumsy waste of a franchise and talent. I was so looking forward to this movie and am still trying to recover from this deeply disappointing travesty. This film does not bother to tread the fine line of plausible action instead it jumps straight to the obvious and ridiculous.
Succession (2018)
When does this get good?
Three episodes in and I still don't care about any of the main cast. Can anyone let me know when something believable, surprising or vaguely interesting happens? The 5 stars are for the sets and costumes which are lovely.
Bad Blood (2017)
All the potential and none of the finish
Good actors all dressed up with nowhere to go, thanks to humdrum writing making the improbable implausible rendering it as weak and often silly.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Style over substance
How do you turn an excellent cast and a decent budget into meh? Just add gunpowder to a milkshake. This movie is to John Wick what Cardi B is to music.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Soft and dull, everything Queen was not
This movie was saved by the music they wrote and performed so many years ago and that is still moving and powerful today. If it wasn't for the music and the last 15 minutes of the film I'd have given it 2 stars. This pic is flat and safe, and nothing like Freddie at all.
Bird Box (2018)
Bullock just gets better with age
I try to be neutral when embarking on a new movie but will confess to a healthy amount of cynicism with this release. Instead I found it fresh and gripping. Well worth the time.
Creed (2015)
Don't believe the hype it's a sequel
I love Sly, and the rocky series but this movie is absolute rubbish. If you haven't seen it by now, thank your stars and keep scrolling. Predictable formulaic nonsense, it's a one star movie with an extra added for sly and his legacy.
The Circle (2017)
Circle jerks
Lame dystopian future wastes a great cast. The four horsemen rolled into one mega corporation take ove the globe to help me moralise and understand my true self just enough to know I'm a jerk.
Range 15 (2016)
The world needs this important piece of cinema
The only thing funnier than this gem of a movie is reading the negative reviews. This total piss take is a completely irreverent romp and will reward those out there that don't take everything seriously. I hope there's a sequel.
Queen of the South (2016)
Disengage brain and brace for melodrama
Those cartel folks are so misunderstood, they have feelings too don't you know? If fiction is your fancy and you don't care much for plausibile plot lines then this show offers hours of predictable cliches. I liked this in the beginning but by the end it became too hard to watch with my eyes permanently rolled skyward.
