American Horror Story: Rockabye (2023)
Stop hate for hate!
Kim is fine. She's not an actress, yet she was invited by the series creators to participate in this season, and she clearly prepared herself A LOT for the role. She's somewhat relatable and she's convincing! Matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she inspired herself in a real life Hollywood PRs or any celebs she likely knows personally, the ones we insist to adore but have no idea how toxic they can be in person. I don't think she's great but I firmly believe people have to stop hating on her just for the sake of... hating on her. The episode was good, the season is unraveling in mysterious ways so far, and I like it a lot. So please, stop hating and give yourself a chance to peel the celebrity skin while giving miss Kimberly an opportunity to show how great of an asset she can be in productions such as AHS. As an AHS fan, I can't bare the numerous low ratings and the amount of comments hating on the season just because she's in it - yet I can't even imagine where she gathers the strength to accept invitations like this knowing people love to criticize her. It's past time we let her be.
Cutthroat Island (1995)
Incredibly Empowering
Too bad this movie has such horrible reputation for being a flop at the time it was released. I watched and rewatched the VHS tapes in my childhood, to the point of causing actual damage to our player- not to mention the tape itself. Geena Davis portraits a fearless pirate heir seeking revenge, while chasing treasures with her somewhat loyal pirate crew. She leads men towards their utmost material desires while going through grief combined with some level self sabotage likely caused by the lack of trust in her own instincts (all of us girls have surely experimented that in a certain level at some point in our lives, which makes the character so relatable to the female audience). Meanwhile, men are most certainly part of the plot- like Matthew Modine himself, who invites the audience contemplate why a man who speaks Latin and is so highly educated ended up in jail, and then with pirates. Yes, men are part of the movie- yet not the centre piece... which may explain why the movie "flopped". Had it been stared by a man, let's say a certain Johnny Deep, maybe the fate of history would've taken a different turn with Cutthroat Island. This movie is nevertheless ahead of its time matter of fact the centre piece Morgan Adams herself is unapologetic, courageous, adamant, legendary, and everything that a lady in the 17th century shouldn't be: "let any man who would challenge me draw that", she said. She managed to whimsically transmute all of that energy to the imaginary of little girls and women- myself included, and I refuse to not acknowledge the importance this movie had in my childhood and how empowering it was, and still is. On the top of that, the soundtrack itself is outstanding and the photography and scenery would make one consider spending vacation in the Bahamas just from watching it. If anything: WATCH IT! It's a must.
Queen Cleopatra (2023)
Mixed feelings
The soap-opera like style is hard to cope with. They have cringe-worthy dialogues and conversations that would probably never had happened in ancient Egypt- such as the one when Cleo confronts a Roman politician during dinner about her power as a self reassuring mechanism above everything, although I do get the idea of adding a dramatic effect to the context. I was truly hoping they would not portray this as a Game of Thrones type of a thing, yet it seems like the producers and directors got their references right 'cause that's exactly what it seems like, with the addition of PhD experts narrating the entire show. Not to mention how the script barely mentions her intelligence as one of her greatest assets, to then focus in the dynamics of the relationships of everyone who's portrayed in the series. The s** scenes are somewhat cheesy for they do not add significant relevance to the narrative, but thankfully they're brief. Overall, it is as educating as it is entertaining, although a tiny little thing here and there makes it a 7.5/10 show.
Lucifer (2016)
It's so bad I put it on to sleep every night
There's absolutely nothing interesting about this series. Acting is bad, dialogues are terrible... it seems like the writers didn't bother to proof reading the script before handing it to production. There's no arch development, nor character development of any kind, as much as they try to force the idea that Lucifer is "changing". Yes, the Devil goes to Therapy and that's awesome, because it means that maybe Jerry Bruckheimer should too. I'm surprised we wasn't caught in the Me Too Era, but anyways. The little mysteries involving the cases that "Detective". "Detective". "Detective Decker" works on are so obvious to the point of boredom. Most acting, including main role itself- is so cringe worthy I find myself half asleep before 10 minutes into the episodes. As a result, it's the best remedy for sleepless nights! No joke, one will get so tired from the obvious plots that sleeping is the only way out. Good night!
Burguesinha (2017)
Rated 1 only because there's no 0
As a Brazilian woman, I'm deeply offended by this movie and can't express in words my frustrations and sadness with this production. They should take it offcatalogue and no one should ever see it. Futile, reckless, stereotypical and mean.
Unicorn Store (2017)
That's Not My Unicorn
What's your Unicorn? A dream job, a house, a trip? The Love of your Life? For Kit, her Unicorn was Steve. An imaginary friend- who happened to be literally an Unicorn- whose dreams, ambitions, frustrations and happiness she happened to share with in her early years drawings and paints. Kit grow up to find that not everyone thinks outside their boxes like she does, and after being rejected by people who are part of the boxy Academic world, she decides to "grow up", find herself a so-called real job in a firm, maybe strength up her relationship with her parents and find herself a boyfriend, just as suggested by the same ones who show up with an annoying Kevin at their door.
Kit finds out that maybe she's not being true to herself and maybe the world that she believes in needs more creative, kind and fearless people, other than Public Relations agents. Steve, the Unicorn, was a friend, a dear friend from her childhood. And after meeting up with The Salesman (Samuel L Jackson couldn't be more amazing than he is in this movie!), Kit goes on a journey that could be an inner journey to find what she wants other than what she needs, or a journey to build a stable of you prefer to see it that way. She finds a friend, Virgil, who helps and supports her every possible way. In the end, Kit realized that her dream of an imaginary friend, Steve, could be in reality a better companion for other people with other needs. After all, during her process to acquire an Unicorn, she finds out things about herself and about the way the world spins, and on the top of that she finds herself true, sweet, loyal friends.
Brie Larson Debut as a Director is a simple sweet ode to our inner child, calling everyone out to think outside their boxes, surround themselves with good friends and believe their craziest dreams- sometimes they are or become true. I couldn't be prouder of her.
