The Godfather Part III (1990)
The soul of the Godfather was Mario Puzo
Okay it's the weakest of the Godfather films as Mario Puzo died before it would be produced, but I am also againist all those who claim that it's bad.
It's a nice epilogue to Michael Corleone's story, paying tribute to his character who finally understands Vito's teachings.
But the film itself proves that the soul of the Godfather was Mario Puzo. They were his characters and only he himself could trully understand them. Coppola created a fine third installment, but I believe that if Puzo was around to write the film and not only contribute the story, scenes like the love scenes or Michael's turn of character would have been done in a better, more fitting to the Godfather's atmosphere themes.
Finally, even though I watched the film with an open mind, it is true that Sofia Coppola being cast was a terrible move...
A great ending to the Godfather that could be better....
It Comes at Night (2017)
We are past the times of loose ends
This was not a bad film. But it wasn't good either. We have long left behind the days when films where leaving so much open for interpretation. Especially in the horror genre.
I really liked the premise and the concept of the film, but I expected it to keep building the tension, something that even though it is being praised for, I didn't watch.
I understand the themes that the director wanted to explore with the film but the end does not satisfy, there were so many better alternatives than just the prediactable one done in a "flat" way. Alternatives that would have expained a lot better the many loose ends that he leaves for us to judge...
Deadly Class (2018)
Amazing Premise but it deconstructs itself
So...This is going to contain some spoilers...(I am going to notify before I start with them so you can keep reading for now...)
I find the premise of this show amazing...The Pilot introduces you to a great world when Marcus the protagonist is accepted at an Assassin's school!!! The cast is great, each perfectly fit in their role. Furthermore, the threat of the school is real and the Pilot manages to create a great ambience of threat for our protagonist as his fellow students are master assassins and take it hard on the newcomer!! So I can easily call it the perfect pilot.
As for the rest of the season (and here start some tiny spoilers), although it was a huge fun, with great cinematography (my only dislike concerns the fast cuts of the fight scenes ) and some amazing plot twists, it slowly deconstructs the premise...
The students, highly trained assassins, are getting beaten almost by everybody
Each has a tragic backstory in which we learn that he didn't want to be in the school or that he has come to it in some sort of misunderstanding ...
Also, it focuses to much to the teen drama. In this amazing setting we keep spending time after time arguing and discussing about the students' love affaires and insecurities, while we could have explored the universe in many more missions and classes.
Finally, Master Lin is set to be a respected and wise Director and Wong's acting is great, but he actually never manages to defeat a single enemy in the whole season...
So it was a great show. Funny and interesting to follow, but it could be so much more...8/10 it is for me, because apart from the drawbacks i mentioned I highly enjoyed it!!!
Sherlock: The Lying Detective (2017)
Could be the best of Sherlock
Weren't for the first episode of the 2nd season, I would suggest this for the best one of the series. It's a tie. This is an amazing episode, definitely a lot better than the previous one. Moffat portrays both Sherlock's and John's demons and inner wars in a brilliant way. This is what I expect from Sherlock. To be astonished and surprised at the last moment, when you think that everything is over and suddenly everything is explained in such a magnificent way that you can only ask for more, while you clear your mind from every other thought and simply focus on the screen to enjoy those specific mind- blowing scenes. Toby Jones's performance was also extraordinary, he was the perfect villain for this episode. The tension in his scenes with Sherlock was huge and Jones's expressions were perfectly portraying Smith's lunacy. This episode even managed to fully counter my disappointment of the series not being the detective-focused series that it once was. It was a brilliant add to Sherlock's myth and I can only hope for the final one to even surpass it!! 10/10
