Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Awesome space western!
I can't for the life of me understand all of the hatred toward this movie. It has a touch of everything and it's never boring. Great ensemble cast with nobody go against type that it takes you out of the picture, sensible sets and situations, but just enough sci-fi fantasy to sell it as what it is - a space western.
I thought it was an absolute blast. This feels like the first time I watched Clash of the Titans as a kid. And Star Wars. And Kung Fu. It pushes all of my nerd buttons and I love it.
Space westerns are supposed to be silly and fun and cliche. That's what makes them fun. They're supposed to be popcorn movies, and Rebel Moon delivered on that. Settle in with a tub of buttered and enjoy!
The Tower (2021)
Series 2 is somehow even better
If you made it through the first one, then give the second one a try. They've taken it to a whole other level. With the return of the series 1 cast, and addition of just a few more characters, they've really rounded out the ensemble nicely.
Fair warning: it's darker and unsettling in places, but still brilliantly written and acted. While the story isn't perfect, the characters and writing manage to somehow lift it above itself.
Not for the faint at heart. Much of the content concerns rape, child rape, domestic violence leading to murder, animal cruelty, childhood trauma, and there is some bloodshed and gore.
BUT, Sarah does give romance a try again, so there's some light shining through. And of course she gets her suspect in the end.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Fun for the whole family!
Really enjoyed watching this with my teenager. Didn't try to take itself too seriously which is how these stories were intended. All of the little details really brought back memories from my childhood. The top hat, the thimble, the round spectacles, the way Peter balanced on the back of a chair and chased his shadow.
Classic Disney formula with a fun new look and a great cast. I had one problem suspending disbelief. The characters really sold the story. Wendy really stands out like she did in the original stories.
We'll be watching this one again for sure. So glad Disney released this to video so soon. Absolute treat.
Hanna (2019)
What Jack Ryan aspires to
Just wrapped season 3 and I can honestly say it's only gotten better. Watching Esmé Creed-Miles and her chararcter mature at the same time lends such gravity to the role. Keeping the focus on her allows one to suspend disbelief when it might be impossible otherwise.
Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos playing off of one another will never disappoint either. So glad to see them reunited on opposite sides.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
The movie is self aware
What an absolute blast! Slightly predictable and ultimately the conclusion we all wanted, but isn't that what we see movies for? It's fun when the good folks win, and people need to accept that.
Not sure if there's room for another chapter but if they make another one, I'll watch it and love it too. Seeing an artist continue to paint their masterpiece is never going to get old.
The New Mutants (2020)
Great extension of the X franchise.
Just watched this with my teen and we loved it. Sure it's not Citizen Kane, but it's got a great build up, dynamic characters (mostly), and a good resolve.
Fans of Umbrella Academy would enjoy this.
3: The Dale Earnhardt Story (2004)
He's no Ricky Bobby
Would have been better with some Shake and Bake. Solid marks for the mustache, though.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
I was skeptical but it was worth the hype
I liked Man of Steel and the Wonder Woman movies, but not much else from the DCEU.
Nolan still did the best Batman work.
That said, the original studio release of this was so confusing. Characters just turned up like afterthoughts, the storyline was a mess, and the effects looked like a bad video game.
This 4 hour epic never got boring or trite. Characters have depth and motivation (except maybe Flash), silly Whedon quips are gone (thank god) effects are incredible, and most of all the story flows and makes sense.
This was a triumph for the Snyder family and the DCEU.
Watchmen (2019)
This. Show. Is. Awesome.
Admirable job of tying in relevant global social issues while maintaining the distinctive weirdness that is the Watchmen legacy. While not directly based on the current comics or the 2009 Zack Snyder movie, the influence and willingness to push the viewer to see beyond what's "normal" is exactly what makes Watchmen great, and it's served up deliciously in this new series.
Can't wait to see how this plays out. Ignore the insulted dudebros crying in the reviews. This is good TV.
The King (2019)
Incredible homage
This newly adapted look at rise of Henry V and the Battle of Angicourt pays homage both to the historic play by Sir William Shakespeare as well as the characters that lived the tale.
Far from historically accurate, this telling focuses on the ambiguity and flawed humanity that often accompanies calls to war. Kudos to Joel Edgerton for such a brilliant story, and bravo to a stunning ensemble cast.
I'll be watching this again and again.
