An error has ocurred. Please try againI first saw all of these films in the cinema and loved them. It's taken a few years for me to collect all these on DVD, and watching them again takes me back to a slightly darker time of my life.
Enjoy!
(Reviews below are scant in detail since IMDB have such great descriptions!)
Reviews
Prey (2022)
Worth watching!!
I'd jest been through a bit of a Predator themed afternoon - so, Predator, Predator 2 (both are great) then I get this "recommendation" for Prey.
I look it up -- yes, it's a Comanche (indian/1700's) version of "Predator". The lead is the same woman out of "Ice Road", by the way.
Yes, you could say that we're redoing the 1987 version of Predator and replacing "Get to da Chopper" Arnold with a woman who, incidentally, is NOT seen as a warrior by her tribe. So, there's that "I'm a woman, hear me roar" thing plus we have swapped genders from Arnold to a meek-looking woman who looks like she couldn't hold her own.
Me personally, yea it's a little like that, but honestly, it's a movie and who give a toss?
This was worthwhile and enjoyable.
Deutschland 83 (2015)
Mamamama ... toll!
Background: I lived in Germany, 1980-1988, because family. I also lived in West Berlin, 1986-1988. I am also a history teacher.
This ... docu-drama is awesome. Myself, knowing about nuclear politics, about "Able Archer" (and that's a documentary worth watching), about just how close East and West Germany (and seriously, that's where WWW3 was going to be fought), knowing that 1983 was closer to war than the Cuban Missile Crisis would ever be, living in Germany ...
Without the details, this docu-drama reads SO MUCH to me. I lived the era, I was there. The tension of war existed without having to know the details. I lived in towns and cities where they practiced the nuclear warning sirens every Sunday at 2pm ... imagine that for a moment, hearing that "noise" ...
This show might be all "drama" but it's not too far off reality. Love it,
Recommended. Especially if you've lived that era.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
This was fun!
Leave brain a door, sit down and enjoy. Yes there are a few plot holes here and there but seriously, who cares? This was an adventure and lot of fun.
Yes, bring your sons and daughters, they'll love it. I'm 50-something and I enjoyed every moment of this movie!
I will say it looks a little like Jumanji - remote island, fantastic creatures, things that will kill you, there's four of them, one of them is in both movies (lol), she looks like and wears almost identical clothing -- but really, does that matter? No.
Highly recommended for.an hour and a half of pure escapism.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Fun to watch!!
Look, this is nothing like the Anime version -- but if you ignore the Anime version and just watch this for what it is, it's a lot of fun.
I'm finding some of the reviews are comparing -- waaay too much -- between the live-action version versus the anime version. This thought will only ruin future live-action episodes, I think.
If you've never seen Cowboy Bebop - highly recommended.
If you know Cowboy Bebop - just enjoy the live version for what it is. :-)
After the Dark (2013)
Whom you should pack in your bunker
Well, this was a *really* interesting movie in the sense of *WHOM* would you "invite" to your nuclear-proof bunker for two weeks or even a year? Would your bunker "survive" more people than it could provide for (food, water, air, entertainment, etc.)?? Our teacher speaks of "theoretical scenarios" - i.e., what would you do in this situation? And yes, the "trolly scenario" is demonstrated - Trolly Problem scenario is here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem). How would students resolve this issue? So we move on to a global problem - "nuclear war". So, who gets to stay and who gets to stay outside? The bunker can only hold 10 people and there are 21. Of the ten, would you include a teacher? A Real Estate agent? A musician? A biologist? A Doctor? Also, you need to consider re-population, so you'll need to include a balance of men and women.
So you *don't* include the Real Estate agent - what could they *possibly* contribute to life after nuclear war? Nothing? Think again. Perhaps their outside work hobby is survivalism? What about the teacher? Yes, you'd include them, for obvious reasons. But what if the teacher was not capable of reproduction? Has their value to the bunker dropped? Possibly.
Let's throw in a variable - someone who doesn't identify their job, their background, their hobbies, their usefulness ... would you include them in the bunker? Most likely not.
So, this movie is NOT really about nuclear war, CGI nuclear bomb scenes, "Terminator"-like graphics, action, "life-after-war" or even "The Road" (a movie).
This is a thinking movie about preparation for disaster and thinking about whom would be most useful for, in this case, post-nuclear life - or really, about post-disaster/pandemic/zombie apocalypse/etc. scenarios.
So, who gets to stay and who gets to die - *thats* what this movie is about.
It is a talkie film, but you get to think about the usefulness of the kind of person that you would include in a bunker following a world-wide disaster. It is most definitely worth a viewing, at least once. I watched it once after reading all the reviews and thought, "Um ... yea ... " but the darned thing is that the movie's concepts played in my head for the next month. Thus why I am writing my review here.
Go watch. Enjoy the irony, the decisions made, the scenarios. It's all good fun.
Wing Commander (1999)
Despite others' negative reviews, I liked it!
This is not a Academy Award winner, nor is it an example of fine acting, nor is it a riveting plot with significant ties to philosophy, life, God, blah blah blah blah ... it's an action/sci-fi movie, so please leave your brain at door and just enjoy this for what it is.
I'm a fan of the Starship Troopers type genre (book was first, movie later) - lots of action, leave brain at door, watch the effects, enjoy the 2 hours of reckless fun! This film, like Starship and others like it, is *just* a fun film to enjoy! I never played the game - and this is the crux of my review - I played something else that seems to predate Wing Commander: "Descent: Freespace - The Great War". I couldn't help but think that there was SO much reference to everything about Freespace, it wasn't funny. The ships, the enemy, jump points, literally everything. It was like watching a movie of the game I just played. BTW, I still play Freespace from time to time - it's good fun.
I did briefly enjoy the "role reprisal" of Jürgen Prochnow in "Das Boot" - "reload tubes 1 and 2, fire when ready": said almost the same line in both movies.
Anyway, I enjoyed it; give it another go and see!
