God Bless America (2011)
Perfect timing, safe execution
Perhaps I was expecting too much of this film. It's a landmark in its own way. It depicts the constant pains and idiocy of modern society. It exists in its own right and it's a shame these times call for a movie like this to be made.
Goldthwait's timing couldn't be better, a film like this needed to be made. His ideas are clear and honest in what he conveys. Perhaps it's too eloquent and simply put however. None of the characters had any depth despite very nice performance of Joel Murray and Tara Lynne Barr. There is a good chemistry between them on the screen, though their parts lack depth due to the script which disabled them to be serious about it. It's too serious to be a comedy and too over the top to be taken seriously. It depicts a problem without giving any plausible solution.
So, 6/10 for me. It's a fun film with a very clear message. However, if you already got the message or are a movie buff, it's quite dull. Recommended if you have teenage angst.
Lake Tahoe (2008)
Simple and true
This movie, albeit slow, contains a lot of universal humanistic aspects. The power isn't in the acting, direction or camera work, it's the combination of these that brings a lot of soul to the screen. This is what I would personally call a film which contains wisdom. It has been a real treat viewing this, even though I remained critical of its direction. Once you get used to the pace of it, you'll get dragged along.
A friend recommended I should see this, so I did. The 'ZEN'-shot of one of the car mechanic companies did not surprise me, and the many references to Kung Fu and Eastern philosophies were great. You should try to watch this film without too much criticism. Then it's definitely worth it.
To summarize, I admire this film's innocence. Minimal script, minimal acting, minimal direction. It leaves a lot to the imagination, a real feast if you're open to it.
