Naked Singularity (2021)
Hell yeah! for bringing some guts to the game.
This movies not going to make anyone famous but it's ballsy.
It incorporates conversations about Physics and the consideration of the metaphysical in the day to day.... without being long winded.
It investigates violence as being short, accidental and often easily won... without being weak.
It remembers that some people are motivated by the idea of doing well for the masses.... without developing a hero complex.
There's a lot of cool stuff in here. Visual metaphors, characters that just can't get along, weirdos who are friends and totally relatable and some ridiculously unbelievable conversations we all would have if the conditions were right.
It's not going to make anybody famous (is my guess) but this movie has a lot to unpack. I wish long, fruitful careers to all involved. May their movies be ever getting better!
Red Notice (2021)
The only way this works is if your target audience is 15 years old and has never played a decent first-person shooter. There can't be many of them.
What a waste of potential.
An incredible cast, all doing a bang-on job, great locations, cinematography, wardrobe etc. All completely put to waste by some truly horrific, American script writing.
If I was a member of this cast I would be angry.
How are we supposed to enjoy the idea that a group of highly intelligent, resourceful, witty, charismatic, determined and creative problem solvers - all world leaders in cultural treasures - are going deal with their confrontation by shooting at each other (badly) with fully automatic weapons in a room full of lost antiquities.
Right. Elite soldiers just walked in, everyone starts shooting and hiding behind wooden boxes while bullets ricochet of ancient, marble statues and nobody gives a rat's arse?
Oh no! We're out in the jungle dealing with a small group of people with no obvious form of transportation so the best we can do with all out military and police training is to stand in the one doorway and shoot at them. Pathetic!
A lame duck. The first time I've ever been so bored I've not bothered to watch a movie with 'The Rock' to the end. And I watched all of that boat in the jungle thing.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
I guess there's some value here but I didn't finish it.
Like another review said, good makeup.
Good acting too, nothing felt forced or relied too heavily on tropes.
I just think it lacked a little substance.
After the End (2020)
I wanted to like it - it wasn't for lack of effort.
This movie seems to falter mid-stride a bit.
The pacing struggles between long, hot days in the Aussie sun and rabble rousing lynch mobs. The slow shots being better done than the pacier.
Their are some good characters and sets in use. But they come across as overdone and laden with clichés.
The script writing doesn't let the subtle relationship issues of a refugee group play out quietly. Relationships between characters are in your face and lack nuance.
Damn good effort though. If I'd put this project together I'd be pretty bloody proud of it. Hope the producers stick with it in these times of good Sci-Fi drought.
