The Punisher (2017)
Slow, boring, un-watchable
If you're looking for a vapid, repetitive, mindless show about a guy who just kinda goes around killing people while reliving his family's murder over and over again in flashbacks, as well as random sex scenes and side characters who are never fleshed out in a significant way-
Watch a Batman movie
This show has nothing to offer but blank rooms, bland dialog and brief spurts of uninteresting, graphic violence, which also isn't very unique apart from being more explicit
This show is grim, just a bunch of white people talking about stuff that doesn't matter because nothing of significance happens
I wish this was better because the movies were both pretty entertaining and wacky, but this is just grim and dull, and ultimately purposeless
Luke Cage was spectacular, riveting and impactful from start to finish with only a small handful of slow moments. Daredevil was similarly sleek and cool, and even Jessica Jones had an atmosphere, and meaning/purpose
This has nothing
Nothing happens, nothing matters, no one cares.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor totally füxx
Pretty early on, about 20-30 minutes or so into this second Taika Waititi Thor film I realized the significance of what I was seeing
This is not your typical Marvel film, nor is it intended to be. This is Thor for adult MCU fans, or even middle-aged ones. It's themes are heavier, it lightly lampoons cliches while pressing heavily into its ongoing narrative, and it's fun without being an out-and-out romp- there's actual drama
This is a fun movie, there's a lot to love, to chew on, and there are actual stakes. The performances are great, and if they weren't, the side plots and auxiliary characters wouldn't be as compelling.
The only character that is somewhat less compelling by design is Korg, who is simple comic relief serving as Thor's literally brainless sidekick, the Watson to his idiotic Sherlock Holmes
This film is special to the MCU for a number of reasons, but one of the more significant ones is Jane Foster's battle with Cancer, which is handled carefully and respectfully- her story is fascinating and might have succeeded more without its title character throttling the spotlight with his chiseled, handsome physique and charm
Gorr was a powerful and frightening villain, despite not fully receiving the development and screen-time he deserved, and Christian Bale's performance was incredible
I love rating the MCU, and in the wake of the amazing Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, I would say this rates close to the top
Favorite line, "They mate for life... in packs of six."
My off the cuff list:
Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

Thor Love and Thunder
Thor Dark World

Avengers Age of Ultron
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy II
Spider-man Far From Home

Captain America Winter Soldier
Captain America
Ironman
Spider-man Homecoming
Ironman 2
Ironman 3
Thor
Captain Marvel
The Incredible Hulk
Avengers Infinity War
Avengers Endgame
Black Widow
Captain America Civil War
Spider-man No Way Home.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Pretty much nailed It
Honestly, I didn't have high expectations.
I am only vaguely familiar with She Hulk, but Tatiana Maslany is hilarious, and rocks as Jennifer Walters, providing dimensionality to a character that requires a ton of charisma
The whole series relies on her being likeable, sarcastic but not a jerk, clever but relatable, and she just nails it. She's engaging, silly, bombastic, and very fun
*Just finished the series, my only complaint is that despite being very clever, it doesn't really lead anywhere. It's definitely funny, but the overarching narrative feels meandering and stunted
**Moon Knight was also fantastic, largely due to Oscar Isaac being amazing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Lmao just the right amount of madness
It's not perfect, probably not for everybody, but it was a great freakin time
You need to be a fan of the MCU to follow everything; they don't hold your hand or dwell on introducing characters or backstories, but you won't care too much if you like Raimi, Doctor Strange or the dark fantasy genre
America Chavez is solid, acting is pretty good overall, action is great, the story works for the most part and it's genuinely scary at times
Definitely the most violent MCU product so far, some moderately gore and... creative murders
Honestly after seeing this twice, the second time in 3D, this is definitively a masterpiece. I don't expect everyone to fully embrace the wildly oscillating tone but the cinematography was epic, the story is strong, it's exciting, fun and gorgeous- even in 3D, which I was initially hesitant about
I would highly recommend this to any MCU fan, and that they witness it in a theater if possible.
Moon Knight (2022)
Yes, thank you, more please!
Much better than Loki, Wandavision or Falcon & Winter Soldier, more like Daredevil and Luke Cage
Firstly I have to say this cements for me that Oscar Isaac is my favorite actor, maybe ever, as if Ex Machina hadn't settled that years ago
Secondly, let me say the casting in this series is consistently superb across the board, although that isn't necessarily unique in the MCU
Moon Knight is an unmissable 10/10 series, and i desperately hope it continues. I'm on the edge of my seat again, for the first time since... maybe that 'What If' episode about Multiversal Dr. Strange (which was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen)
The plot, settings and characters feel unique, unfamiliar and exciting, the mystery elements are titulating, and stylistically it's gorgeous
Oscar Isaac is one of the greatest actors of all time, and I would argue anything he's in is worth watching just for him, but if you're a fan of action/adventure/fantasy stuff, this show is seriously compelling
The writing is also master-class; until it's final moments, it remains as unpredictable and clever as it is exhilarating- a breath of fresh air for comicbook-movie lovers
I will say that if it's dire, serious, grounded material you're looking for (in your comicbook fantasy worlds), maybe go see The Batman, which is also uniquely brilliant
But if you're looking for an intriguing dark fantasy with great action, look no further, because Marvel has you covered apparently- this is so good!!!!!!
Halo: Contact (2022)
Absurdly ridiculous, as it should be
I'm two episodes in, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd love to see more...
But are we really supposed to believe Master Chief never takes his helmet off?
Much of the first two hour-long episodes revolve around fan-service; so much that many of the direct callbacks to the games are a bit jarring- but as a fan of the games and the universe they've created, they nailed it.
The casting is on point, the tone is unique and thrilling, and it's dedication to the source material borders on upsetting.
At one point while they're hurtling through an asteroid field in a Pelican spacecraft, Master Chief's companion says they're scared, and he goes: "everything dies."
Many lines are cartoonishly on-the-nose, but honestly the whole thing is handled fairly well. It knows what it is. Its not the best writing ever, but if you're a fan it's everything you'd want from a Halo TV show and then some.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Lotta face acting goin on
Let's talk about motha-f4ckn Swamp thing b!+ch OK: this show got a lotta face actin up in this muv n' I ain't tha firs' one ta say it
FIRS- let me say that cheese is an experience
Evry man should eat sum cheese.
Aight here's the real jizz
I mean jazz
Jizzem
Aight here it is: Swamp Thing
It's great
It's like a show
That guy, there was a guy, and there were some people, honestly I found it very confusing- befuddling even; but the soundtrack!
The show was great. Watch the show, It's fine.
It's better than most of the crap out there now, lemme tell you. But WAIT-
THE HORROR- the body-horror, that is- what a great crazy kinda boring what just happened wait
Heres the thing: there's a lotta great sh!+ happening here. Wish this was still a show.
But it's over.
Justice League (2017)
So much exposition and a wildly fluctuating tone
This movie had so much to do, so it ended up cramming in a bunch of exposition and only halfway explained crucial details about the main plot device and undeveloped villain. "Mother-boxes" sounds like a lame ripoff of the Infinity Stones in a post-MCU era regardless of source material, and "Steppenwolf" is a vaguely defined character with the goofy name of a famous rock band.
Those issues aside, it's clear the crew tried very hard to pull everything together, so it's a shame the effort comes across as half-baked and dull. The producers are probably at fault for rushing this series to align with releases from the MCU.
The film hinges itself on its heroes, but Ezra Miller as Flash either can't deliver the emotional depth required for his scenes with Billy Crudup as his father, or the director dropped the ball for those crucial scenes. These moments stick out in a bad way due to Miller's bad acting. The rest of the cast does a great job.
There are some great fight scenes, but most of the film is exposition. It's like watching characters read the plot summary with intermittent action scenes, interrupted by brief emotional beats and Ezra Miller's clumsy line delivery.
I gave this a 7 because despite obvious flaws, I recognize the source material was written for children. This dark film seems to be intended for adults. Glaring issues: the tone fluctuating wildly from scene to scene, bad CGI for certain elements including the villain, and on-the-nose, mechanical sounding expository dialogue.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
It's well done, but what does it accomplish?
Here's the thing, 'The Room' is already a glorious, ridiculous movie that exists and succeeds at being hysterically funny (despite its best efforts). You don't need any backstory to understand how it happened or what makes it funny. I'm not convinced this biopic about its development actually sheds any meaningful insight into its creation, and as a comedy it actually isn't as funny as its source material.
It is entertaining, I just don't think it adds much more to the mythology than the titular book by Greg Sestero, that being said it's pretty fun to experience the bizarre unknowable Tommy Wiseau first-hand the way Sestero did. Maybe if I hadn't seen these actors work together in so many ridiculous comedies I could have engaged more with the characters and focused less on their mediocre performances: a movie like this requires a minimum level of believability that just wasn't there for me. There was clearly a tug-of-war between the focus on comedic elements and the grounded realism that was required to sell this as a true story.
I'm not sure how a story like this could be done as a biopic. It would've worked better as a documentary with interviews from the cast. Instead it feels like a strangely bland comedy about two talentless "actors" trying to make a passion-project.
Comedians of the World (2019)
Funny and great!
Cant possibly imagine how this doesnt have a better score!
Great stand up from talented comedians of several countries, definitely worth a watch for fans of comedy. Instantly wanted to see more, love the concept, never felt underwhelmed or disappointed, laughed out loud, every bit resontates...
Love how these routines brought me closer to other parts of the world! Loved hearing new perspectives on relatable themes and topics! Comedy is universal and it's great to see other cultures being represented, and great to see talented established comics I've never heard of or seen before. It felt fresh and fun, so much that I felt obligated to comment about it here.
I love how Netflix has been pulling content from around the world, it's more interesting than the repetitive crap I keep seeing on TV and other streaming services, and I appreciate the grounded, less "high-concept" material, especially when my life is cluttered and stressful as it is.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Awe, I wanted to like this; many good ideas executed poorly
There are a lot of problems with this show, the strange pacing or lack thereof (I'm calling you out screenwriters!), the frequent overacting of everyone outside of the main cast, the stunted plot-lines, unintentionally silly expositional dialogue and overt use of sexuality which sometimes dehumanizes the characters.
I also have personal qualms with the sadistic and nihilistic tone, random acts of unnecessarily graphic/gratuitous sexual violence, and the plodding storylines.
I do not think this is a good show. It's entertaining at times, with themes and ideas that are interesting, but without being especially engaging. Perhaps that is due to its constant stream of dialogue and reliance upon aggressively dark, cruel and violent imagery to punctuate this otherwise dull and melancholic death-march.
There are moments that shine for their use of witty humor or occasionally action and set-pieces. Episodes directed by Neil Marshall particularly stand out. Some of the dialogue in other episodes could have been written by children; ...heavily caffeinated, severely disturbed children.
I feel that somewhere beneath the ham-fisted dialogue and unresolved aggression, there's probably a very interesting and fun story that's worth watching or reading, but somebody needs to do a second pass on this series and kinda just smooth it out a little bit, maybe cut some of the scenes down so it flows better from plotline to plotline, character to character. As it is, this series kinda sucks.
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
Simultaneously glorious and repulsive; i mean, truly devastating at times
There's plenty of gut-wrenching horror, vomit, guts, savagery, human parts and people being taken apart, piece-by-piece, alive and screaming, splattered, smashed, squished, ripped, grinded, slashed, disembowled- human bodies are treated in such a depraved way- and there's a completely absurd plot tying it all together.
Ash Vs Evil Dead is very entertaining, which makes all the morally-bankrupt, vile and utterly disgusting content even more disturbing.
This is contemptible garbage with a trashy heart, like the "Feast" or "Wrong Turn" movies, Saw movies, or Alien V Predator: Requiem. If you have limits, this will cross them.
If you've seen the original films, you have some idea of what to expect, but this is about a million times more graphic and with terribly realistic practical effects, rounded out with some cgi.
It's masterfully done.
Personally I have never seen anything so revolting in my life, but I can't stop watching.
Get Out (2017)
Get Out is impressive and awesome. Best horror I've seen in a while!
People will be talking about this one for a long time.
Get Out is an extremely powerful, poignant horror movie with some humor. Whatever elements of action or schlock that are present take a backseat to the real human drama that plays out when Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) meets his white girlfriend's eccentric family.
The characters are fleshed out immaculately, with Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener in their best performances to date, and Caleb Landry Jones in an appropriately, intensely creepy role. But Kaluuya is the star here, and he delivers with zeal a shocking depth and range of emotions. In fact, more often than not its what he doesn't say that delivers the most impact... which is all to say that this masterpiece could not have been accomplished without the masterful direction of Jordan Peele.
Peele builds atmosphere and tension like the Big Bang, dunking you into the mind of the main character while he navigates through very visceral danger.
If you're looking for a film that sets out to entertain first and foremost with shock and terror, but also with poignant social commentary and real philosophical meat to chew on, Get Out is the movie you need to see. You won't regret it.
This isn't Cabin in the Woods, Peele isn't interested in subverting genre conventions. What he has crafted is entirely original and unique, and thankfully free of clichés or stereotypes.
There are no "monsters" here. The real villains are entitlement, egotism, and objectification, and g.d. they are scary!
