Streets of Colour (2023)
A multicultural masterpiece!
Absolutely adored Ronnie's method of storytelling, cast was brilliant, direction terrific, solid central character, film seemed to get better and better with each stanza, I found the end incredibly moving with a glorious overtone of love. The lightheartedness in the dark showed a very powerful message about survival, addressing the need to fit in whilst surrounded by overwhelming racism and undertones addressing the need for more voices to be heard in multicultural Australia, and calling out our quick judgements we make about peoples character. A film that not only must be seen by all Australians, but must be felt and heard by all globally with its universal message!
Devil in a Dress (2020)
A Tight 40 Minute Neo Noir
I love everything about this film from the soundtrack to ADR to the characters and the plot. Elements remind me of Takeshi Kitano's Brother with the patience and humour of a Jim Jarmusch film. It's like a nice blended coffee or a 18 year + mixed whiskey leaving you with a morbid satisfaction from a basso profundo of polite savagery.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
A Movie about Women Schooling Men
Brilliant in terms of gender equality. Some great Comedy. All my long term Star Wars female friends cried. A pity it was Empire in reverse and there were a lot of wasted opportunities and cheese. Some editing choices that weren't the best but still empowering for Women. I recommend everyone see this.
The FP (2011)
The title that launched the brothers and sister Trost careers!
A dark look into our near future. Kids now grow up in a social dysfunct dystopian nightmare and the only way to resolve local conflicts is through the use of a futuristic device known as the "Beat Beat". JTRO must find a way to defeat his nemesis and win the love of the cutest skank in film history.
This film is hilarious and a must watch and is a great diversion from films like 8-Mile.
Jason Trost (Star of All superheroes must die), Brandon Trost (who shoots all of Seth Rogens films) are brilliant. However the real star of this film is Sarah Trost the costume designer who in a perfect world may have won an Academy Award for her brilliant costumes set in the new future of the FP.
I would also class this film as being in the Cyberpunk Genre for the attitudes of the characters and the localised dystopian feel.
Star Wars Downunder (2013)
Bloody Brilliant
I was blown away by this film after watching it on you tube. I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars Fan Films but i am definitely a fan of this unique Australian take on the Star Wars universe.
Better than the Attack of the Clones film i worked on.
Great VFX, story and action and homage to all things Australian under the two suns. Love the take on the laser boomerangs, Ned Kelly Stormtroopers and AFL jersey Rebels, and the language was brilliant.
The twist tops were fantastic!
Putting the word out on the street that if you haven't seen this film to watch it or get buggered.
In the Middle (2005)
A great new film from an inspiring young filmmaker...
Most notably this film was directed, filmed and acted very beautifully. The emotions of the piece were brilliantly captured amongst the backdrop of rural Australia.
Clayton Watson shone as 'Brendan' and showed us his range as an actor, a great break from his 'stereotypical kid' role in Matrix 2 and 3.
A deep drama that touches us when you've lost someone close to you.
Shot on 2 perf 35mm using the same camera's I use from MovieLab.
When the FTO funded this film that actually did something right for a change, I wouldn't be surprised if Natalie rose to become one of Australia's most prominent directors of our time.
