Mystery Island (2023)
I love murder mysteries BUT.....
This is no Knives Out or Glass Onion, which is what I think Hallmark was sorta kinda maybe shooting for. Both of those movies were FUN and interesting and well written and well acted. But Hallmark's Mystery Island was none of that. Some of the actors ( Kezia Burrows was the worst ) were either bad actors or over acted so much that is was hard to watch. No chemistry between the leads at all, may not be their fault though since the writing is so bad. The sleuthing was laughable...for example ( no spoiler here) when 3 supposed smart and observant people are looking for clues and miss one sitting right on top of a rock, like it was deliberately left there to be found. If Hallmark does make this into a series, I do not see myself searching for it to watch. The 1 star I gave it was because it had potential.....if the directing, producing, writing and acting had been any good.
Return to Me (2000)
Loved it
Nice romantic movie. Great character actors, great sound track. Well done. David Duchovny has been a favorite of mine since XFiles. Minnie Driver , while never been an actress I followed, did a beautiful job. Carroll O'Conner and his "Sinatra Gang" are a joy to watch. This is an easy to watch romantic movie.
The Waltons' Homecoming (2021)
Well I guess they TRIED to remake the Christmas classic...
But it lacked the warmth and charm of the original 1971 The Homecoming: A Christmas Story. This remake has a tweeked script which feels contrived and awkward. Often it feels like there was a list of things from the 1971 version that the writers needed to include in this new show. But they just checked them off the list as they added them with no real feeling put into the script. They also made the Christmas Eve Santa gifts storyline boring, instead of nostalgic and heartwarming. The actors over-act and look giddy or silly most of the time. The costumes and sets look bright and shiny new, which appears fake for the location and timeline during the Depression. And what was with that bit with the CGI great white buck ?! Thanks, but I prefer the movie with Patricia Neal as the mother, Ellen Corby as Grandma, Cleavon Little as Hawthorn and all the original actors who played the Walton children.
