Captain Ron (1992)
GREAT Movie Boss!
It is beyond me how an excellent movie such as Captain Ron received such a low rating. Of course I never understand the ratings here...really great movies with low ratings and real stinkers with extremely high. At times I wonder if the stinkers are not just pumped up in score by friends. Who knows...but over the years I stopped reading reviews til after I viewed the movie. They just cannot be trusted.
Good comedies are difficult to find nowadays. If you come across one watch it and enjoy...don't just dis it and toss it aside.
Captain Ron has all the elements of a great comedy. Good comedic actors, good plot, and just enough foreboding when released it comes back and hits you much harder on the funny side than ever expected.
Martin Short and Mary Kay Place played their parts well but, I have to admit, Kurt stole the show...it didn't even seem like he was acting...he was Captian Ron!!!
Commune (2005)
Not a Documentary...more like a home movie.
This could have been great. It could have educated us all on this little known subject of communes and the true hippies of the day. All the elements were there for making a great documentary...many people are still alive and willing to to be interviewed...film makers were fortunate enough to have film clips from the past...the commune still exists etc.
BUT Instead of taking all that was in their possession and making a great documentary they came up with a chopped up mess of what appeared more like a home movie. Very difficult to follow. Because I was so interested in the subject I re-ran the film several times but to no avail...there just isn't any substance, any direction...
The problem obviously lies in not only the present day filming but in the editing. Too bad...maybe someone will give the subject another try in the future.
Santa Clarita Diet (2017)
Santa Crude
I usually like shows/movies that are quirky and a bit off the wall. Santa Clarita Diet does not fall under that category...it is just plain BAD in every way imaginable. Everything is waaay too exaggerated.
In the past if I saw Drew Barrymore's name appear it was almost a guarantee what I was about to watch was going to be very good. Possibly due to the many changes in her personal life she could be burnt right out and not thinking clearly...as I cannot see an actress of her talent and class accepting this role.
A final warning...if you chose to watch this show I only recommend it to persons with a very, very strong stomach...many sickening scenes.
Diamonds to Dust (2014)
Untrue facts in a Biography - Simply UNFORGIVABLE
Nonsense such as this is the reason people run around spewing wrong information on subjects. You can't really blame them when film makers have no shame and a lot of nerve.
Whether it be a biography or a documentary they are both part of history. It does not matter if you are telling a story about Vikings at war, a natural disaster, a religious event or an individual...the FACTS MUST BE TRUE! Obviously there was no research done whatsoever! i.e. at the beginning of the movie the year flashed across the screen...that year Jayne's daughter would have been approximately 2 years old, the girl they had playing the part was about 10. That was the first blaring error and there were many, many more.
I watched about half of this movie and was so angry I shut it down. Yes the acting was bad, the story was disjointed and all over the place, and the actors in no way resembled the people they portrayed.
BOTTOM LINE...If you want to make a fact-based movie...do the research, tell the truth...don't fill people's minds with falsehoods. Unfair and unforgivable.
Grace and Frankie (2015)
What Happened to Grace and Frankie?
When I watched the series the first season I thought it was fresh, new, funny and could not be compared to any other show. I remember the second season was not too bad. It seemed to be similar to the first...maybe not as much zest but still good. BUT...Season 3...yuk, blah, thumbs down.
I began watching Season 3 with excitement, I was so glad the series returned. I watched the first episode and then watched it again thinking maybe I missed something or was having an off day. Same with the second episode...I watched it twice. Then I moved on watching episode after episode...it was actually a struggle to get through the whole season. It was lacking, it had changed...somehow a few of the characters I loved seemed to be a bit obnoxious...some scenes were just childish, silly.
To the writers of the show: What are thinking?
A United Kingdom (2016)
Well done history lesson
A great history lesson I am sure most of us were not taught and are not aware of.
A United Kingdom was very well done, straight to the point without throwing in of unnecessary embellishments...as films are known for when it comes to true to life stories. I prefer the facts with a bit of flare but when it comes to history; hopefully, someday film makers will come to the realization a lot of extra fluff does not make the story more interesting it just muds up the facts. I suppose there is a fine line between a movie and a documentary. This movie was perfectly told.
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike couldn't play their parts better, they were exemplary. Good choice of actors.
A well deserved 10/10.
Feed the Beast (2016)
Cannot believe Cancellation
I cannot believe this series was canceled after one season.
I found it captured my interested from the very first moment. It was unique.
Upon reading the description of the show I initially thought...oh no, a high-end restaurant, mob ties, a single parent, alcoholism and David Schwimmer in a serious role...this is not going anywhere. I watched 1 episode and it just grabbed me. Everything was presented in a manner far from the way I thought it would be. It did not compare to anything else I had viewed previously and that means a lot when looking for something unique. I had not seen David Schwimmer in a serious role and he did well as did all the other actors.
Surely this series did not have enough exposure...that is the only reason I can think of for AMC stating 'the show simply didn't achieve the results needed to move forward with a second season'.
I am extremely disappointed and will miss the series even if it lived for only 1 season.
At Home with the Braithwaites (2000)
Still a good watch after all these years
I know the series is getting old now as it appeared between the years 2000-2003 but it is still worth the watch. I came across the show while doing a search for Amanda Redman's work. She now plays in The Good Karma Hospital and I was wondering what else she may have performed in.
At Home with the Braithwaites is a typical family, the more children more the range in personalities...a studious child, a quirky child and one that is just always finding trouble. Thrown into the mix is a husband who is there but not totally...and a huge win in the lottery. Some odd decisions are made, I would not do the same, but it all adds to the plot.
Erasing Eden (2016)
Appropriate Title but they forgot to ERASE
What the heck???? All I can say about this movie is....If I strapped a video camera to my dog and let him walk around for 90 minutes I am sure his film would be far more interesting and make more sense than what I just watched.
Seriously, I have not seen such a bad movie in a very long time. It captures your interest in the very beginning but just hangs...it does not go anywhere after the first few minutes. It is quite straightforward I did not find the movie to have any deep, profound or hidden meaning as others said they did...even if it did a badly made film is just that.
Retroactive (1997)
What a Gem!!!!!
Kind of wondering how I missed this movie in 1997 yet I found and viewed the same off the wall style movie called U-Turn. It's all in the promo I guess, if there is not enough then hopefully you just get lucky and find the hidden gems such as this.
One thing I would like to mention is stick with it in the beginning, do not turn it off thinking it is a boring go nowhere movie. Probably the only thing I disliked about the film was the first 10 minutes. In that period of time there was the set up for us to get the plot idea. However, it dragged out waaaaaay toooooo lonnnnnng. I actually felt as if I had been hypnotized as I could not remember for the life of me what I was watching....until it kicked back in. So....do not be discouraged with the beginning. Stick to it. Probably the only complaint I have. Besides the regular 'she had the opportunity to do this' or 'he could have done that' BUT does that not occur in everything we watch? I believe it does.
I can tell you this movie has an offbeat style as mentioned previously. Not many around like it. Jim Belushi fits the part perfectly! He scared me :) I didn't know he had it in his acting skill set to be such a psycho bully. The women were great. All round well done; edge of the seat; OMG this is crazy; what's next kinda flick.
If you like something a bit different from mainstream this is for you. Enjoy!
Diablo (2015)
Good Actor - Bad Movie
OMG who wrote the reviews posted so far? - The Eastwood family? This movie is HORRIBLE in every way imaginable.
Scott Eastwood seems like he is skilled, has a natural talent for acting and is quite good at it taking in even the smallest detail and putting it back out for all to view. He is a good actor. BUT...this movie? I cannot believe most of the movies he has been cast in are westerns. His father played a lot of westerns and he does not have to follow in his footsteps in that manner. I don't know who is going along that line of thinking but it is crazy. I would hate to see him typecast so early in his career. Scott is young, talented and good looking and this movie Diablo was really beneath him - actually an insult.
Diablo was badly written, just a bad plot from beginning to end. It drags, it was just incomprehensible at times. Were we supposed to pick up on the PTSD following the Civil War? Seems to be the whole premise of the movie.
The ending made me think I had just watched a movie trailer.
45 Years (2015)
A movie about nothing
Unless I missed something, and I do not believe I did, this is definitely 'the movie about nothing'.
It dragged out one tiny little insignificant moment in time, one happening in a person's life, over a whole movie. If it was all consuming as it appears to be this marriage never would have lasted over the period of 45 years. If the point is how some hang on to a belief of something lost and what could have been....we get the point. But it certainly was bare bones for a movie, needed some meat and potatoes to go with it.
A time waster.
The Big Short (2015)
Very Imformative
A huge thank you to opening our eyes to something most of us were not aware of. Also for the update on the new 2015 shenanigans that seem to be the same scam with a different name. We all need to know what is happening in the world. Good to see someone is willing to make such films.
As for the portrayal I am not fond of the 'gimmicks' used in this type of movie. If well done then maybe. They were not well inserted into the theme, they were added awkwardly and attached more confusion to what already was a confusing subject to some. Insulting and baby-like explanations that really pulled your thoughts away then your mind had to settle back into the main storyline once again. If meant to lighten up a heavy subject they did not work. Even if the director thought putting Margot Robbie naked in a bathtub, covered only by bubble bath, and having her explain Wall Street terms made them more understandable - she did not. Otherwise well-done and saved by a great cast.
The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
Very profound film
Somewhere deep inside something is telling me I should rate this movie slightly higher than 7/10. However, there is something else nagging at me telling me not to.
Maybe I am looking for it to be too realistic in thought/action/outcome of certain roles. I believe the teenager and her thoughts/actions are quite believable. The confusion of the boyfriend quite believable. BUT the mother and her reactions at the film's end???.....Hmmmm kind of put a damper on the the whole movie for me. Maybe that is just what mothers do. Maybe that is just how a good mother reacts. I expected more of a bang. Still remains very good, certainly not a time waster if you have a taste for this type of drama. Turns out Bel Powley is a great little actress. Hoping to see more of her in serious roles.
Love & Mercy (2014)
Unbelievably BAD
I heard so much about Love & Mercy I could not wait to see it.
It turned out to be 121 minutes of nothing. Absolutely nothing.
A child could have put a story together better than this story was told.
When I see a good actor in a really bad movie I often wonder if they even bothered to read the script.
It was disjointed. Possibly it was trying to portray a bad drug trip. There was no depth to the characters. Almost felt like no connection between the actors on the screen.
Don't waste your time if you are interested in a biography of Brian Wilson because you won't find it in Love & Mercy. It makes no sense whatsoever. I don't know the story behind the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson and I am sure anyone younger than I does not either, and we still don't after viewing this mess.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Unbelievable what gets on TV these days
I really wish this site would give one the ability to score (0) out of (10). In this case it is necessary. (1) is an extremely high rating for such a nonsensical mess of a show.
This is the absolute worse TV show I have ever viewed....ever, ever, ever...EVER!!! You will never get this 1/2 hour of your life back so think carefully before viewing.
I should have known as I have never seen anything Tina Fey or her buddy Amy were involved in that was worth watching. I don't find them humorous and have no idea why they have such a following. Possibly just a geographical commitment from fans. NYC is huge and I believe that was their stomping grounds for many years. Well enough of my little rant....I guess reviews have always been a subjective thing.
Back to the subject at hand...it is my true opinion....this TV show stinks...no ifs, ands or buts involved.
*****I have read others' accusations with regards to this site being 'fixed'...to reviews being submitted by people involved with either the show/movie....and never believed it. After reading the submissions added since my posting I TRULY BELIEVE it now. This is the worst show EVER....EVER...guaranteed you could not laugh if your life was threatened to do so...unclear thoughts from beginning to end....makes no sense never mind no humour. As if it was written by someone who lives in an insane asylum. Never has there been a show in the history of TV so BAD.*****
THIS WILL BE MY LAST POSTING as I seek truthful reviews not reviews laden with favouritism.
Empire (2015)
I do not understand what all the hype is about!
The show is not bad but it is far from all the ranting and raving that is going on about it that I have heard on every talk/news show in the last 3 weeks.
In fact it is quite ordinary and seems to be a bit of an old story line. There is a show that hit the TV last year named 'Power' (starring Omari Hardwick and not to be confused with the new superhuman detective show 'Powers') that is far, far better than Empire in many ways...with a similar storyline. However, it did not seem to catch on and I am not sure it will be back for a 2nd season.
The one thing that REALLY bothered me and it occurred in the first couple of episodes. There is a hint the 'ruler of the empire' knows through business dealings/or knew...the president of the USA. Whatever the relationship is there is NO WAY he should be calling the president by his first name while in conversation. He should have called him Mr. President. I found that to be very disrespectful. We get the idea the man is very powerful. I am sure it could have been written in another manner for the audience to draw the conclusion of friendship between the two.
As mentioned...it is not bad...a good little time waster but not outstanding in any way and certainly does not match all that has been said about the show.
Kept Woman (2015)
Who wrote movie description? Are you kidding me?
Directly below is a partial quote taken from the description of this movie:
...'finds comfort with a man trapped in a modern day society after being left behind in a botched time traveling experiment from the 1950'...
This is NOT what this movie is about AT ALL!!!!! She does NOT find comfort!!!! She is stalked and kidnapped!!!!!
'left behind from a botched time traveling experiment' NOT TRUE AT ALL. There is nothing in this movie re: time travel botched or otherwise!!!!! (just because the protagonist had a containment room decorated in the style of a previous decade does not make it 'time travel')
I wondered why this movie was labelled as a Drama if it involved time travel I thought there should also be the label of Fantasy. BUT...There is no time travel. AND....If she was truly finding comfort then yes, maybe label as drama......HOWEVER....as mentioned previously she was not finding comfort...she was kidnapped by a serial killer.... HENCE....this is nothing more than a Horror film and should be labelled as such with a proper description as the whole description on this site is nothing more than a mishmash of words that mean nothing at all.
It is almost as if someone was confused and copied and pasted a movie's description on to this movie and it actually belonged to another film.
All that aside. On top of being angry as all get out when watching this, waiting for things that never happened.....it is a cheaply made, all round bad movie....not worth watching at all.
*****It was brought to my attention after 5 days of posting this review the movie's description was changed. IT NOW HAS A PROPER PLOT DESCRIPTION. Thank You. :)*****
Making most of what I wrote a moot point.
Under the Skin (2013)
No word for how bad this film was
Another film I could not even vote for.
I agree with another on here who posted 'did someone owe a favour'? I sat through the whole film and had the same reaction. what the heck was that? No, there is nothing ground breaking or any other of the descriptions listed by some who raved about this catastrophe.
Scarlett Johansson what were you thinking? You are not someone on the way up who has to take anything offered. You are a well-known, well-respected actress and one of the few out there who are really good. Guess you were duped also.
Everything in this movie moved very, very slowly just the same as with the opening credits...I thought, when is this going to stop...on with the show. Same with the movie...if Scarlett drove down a road you saw the whole drive down the road, if Scarlett walked down a hill you saw Scarlett walk allll the waaaay down the hill...I assume by now you are getting my point.
And speaking of points there was not one in this film. No plot, no beginning, middle or ending...or not one that made sense.
I found this movie on a list entitled '10 Movies You Did Not See in 2014 and Probably Won't'. Now I know why. I certainly will not be viewing the other nine after this time-waster.
Tusk (2014)
I agree with many others - don't waste your time or money!
You gotta be kidding. What was this? I know everyone is looking for something new, fresh, different in their story lines but this wasn't it.
This movie is really bad in every way. It was listed as a comedy/drama/horror. Definitely labelled incorrectly. Maybe a fantasy/horror, even though it did not instill fear. Not fair to release a movie and list it as something it is not as the viewers expect something totally different and they don't get it. If I want to view a comedy I expect it to be one.
And I know this is a very small point and does not affect the outcome in any way but I am so tired of watching movies that when taking place in Canada they have all Canadians speaking as if they were in the movie Fargo. Small or large I would at least try to make everything as accurate as possible. If a movie has a lot of errors it gives one the impression it was just thrown together. It was very distracting listening to the ridiculous fake accent. Maybe this was the comedy portion.
The worst ending possible. There were many ways this movie could have ended. Are we to believe this is how everyone's life continued? No attempt made to correct anything? Why not just stop the movie half way through.
Justin Long sure has been in a lot of stinker movies as of late. He should be more careful when choosing work in the future or his career will soon be gone.
Expiration Date (2006)
Absolutely Delightful!!!
Light, refreshing, different from the same old same old same old stuff out there.
Does definitely stand on the threshold of black comedy.
Much more than what I expected upon movie start up.
My suggestion? Give it a chance it picks up quickly and keeps you captured.
Don't know what else to say - I love being succinct; however, some sites do not believe in brevity...there must be a reason so I follow the rules.
Do yourself a favour, if you want a 'feel great after watching movie'....this is one of the few I have come across....good, clean, a bit dark and different. Loved it!!!
Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector (2006)
What did you all expect from Larry the Cable Guy???
I didn't give the movie a score because I never had the chance to finish watching it. I just ran out of time this weekend.
What I don't understand are the ratings and comments made with regards to this movie.
What did you all expect from Larry the Cable Guy? The humour seemed right on par with all his other stuff...maybe a little bit more raunchy but it definitely was Larry.
I am not saying it is a great movie, I am not saying it was a nasty movie....I am only saying it is Larry and I went into watching it knowing I would see the typical Larry stuff, and I saw typical Larry stuff!
St. Vincent (2014)
AMAZING Movie
This movie just fell together like it was meant to be. The storyline, the interaction between the actors, the characters they played...and played so well; it just could not have been better.
It was so real, so lifelike, touched on all aspects of human life, dealt with historical facts, and just all round everyday life right down to feeding a pet and mowing a lawn. I felt like I was there. I felt that I could go outside and sit in my lawn chair and see Bill walking down the street with his little friend....or Melissa standing outside giving Bill heck.
There was humour, there were tears but best of all NO smut, no filthy, lengthy sex scenes, not too much profanity as most movies these days are filled with to the point where one feels like walking out.
A great, all round good, clean, absolutely amazing movie. I could go on and on but it would only be more accolades.
A MUST SEE movie. Enjoy!
Rudderless (2014)
Most enjoyable and out of the ordinary
The movie was everything I expected when I read it was a movie directed by William H. Macy. I believe everything this man does is beyond excellent.
Upon reading Billy Crudup and Felicity Huffman were among the characters in Rudderless again I expected nothing less than excellence. Two people who are both wonderful in their chosen careers. I cannot remember anything either performed in that was not outstanding.
I absolutely loved the twist part way into the movie that allowed us to look at the catastrophe that had taken place from a very different point of view. An unusual point of view. A point of view most would not care about or consider if given the option. But...the story worked its way so nicely around it
it captured my interest even further. I also liked that it was revealed and moved on
that it did not hover or get stuck on this fact but it did mold who and what the main character (Billy Crudup) became and what he was all about.
Given the plot of the movie it could have been presented in a very dark and disturbing manner. The director did not allow this to happen. It is light enough, friendly, funny, heart-warming
everything that makes a well rounded movie that one can understand the feelings and relate to.
Had I known the full plot of the movie I can say I probably would not have chose it thinking it would be upsetting
but it wasn't, not at all. I would like to thank Mr. Macy for presenting it in such a manner that just about anyone in the family could view it and enjoy it.
Also interesting
the interaction between the young and the old
40 or 50 is not what it used to be, things have changed
it showed times have changed and friendships can work at any age, it is commonplace these days.
I am not sure how others feel but I am getting very, very, very tired of the sex, profanity, violence, lack of clothing, urination that we see in movies
I could go on and on but we have seen it all and all is not necessary. This is not one of those movies.
Nice job William H. Macy, actors and all involved! I cannot wait for your next project if you choose to do another.
Wish I Was Here (2014)
Perfect in every way
I realize there is a maximum I must reach to have this published. Hope I will as there is not much to say except this movie was just wonderful! One of the best I have seen in a very long time.
Wonderful in every way.
The thought put into the writing of every line.
A good solid mixture of drama and comedy.
The characters. Their interaction with each other. And most important the feelings projected.
Some scenes caused one to reflect. To think deeply about things both small and large. Or at least remind the audience to take the time to apply these thoughts instead of just rushing around in this crazy world, going full tilt, missing the important things in life.
Enjoy! I am sure you will.
