I Can Be President: A Kid's-Eye View (2011)
Mesmerizing
Extremely well done and well-produced documentary for children. My son loves this and now knows all the presidents. He watched it when he was 5 and now again at 7 so it has an enduring quality that is a hallmark of a successful product. I found the children's dialogues or monologues the perfect length, their presentation is captivating and the balance of animations and exposition is perfectly paced. I wish they would do more of these documentaries on other diverse topics because our children are learning more in our age of the new media than with classical methods of instruction. Congratulations to all parties involved.
Mars Needs Moms (2011)
Still Disney Fan
My 5 year old could not make it to the end. The suspense of the mom being taken and then Milo falling through all kinds of dangerous predicaments was too much for him. For me, the didactic heavy-handedness was like a sledgehammer. If I can't force my child to eat broccoli, I'm a bad mom. The male role model was hapless and dangerous. I don't think Walt Disney's purpose was to edify. My son loves movies and we love Disney, so I was ready to like this. It was too didactic and political much like our cultural landscape these days. We are still Disney fans. No competition for our movie-loving family between Pixar and Disney, just fun is what we like!
