Jack Ryan (2018)
If you liked Homeland, don't hesitate!
What a great surprise! I somehow never believed that Amazon is able to produce a series as good as the ones we can get at Netflix or HBO, but he we are, I stand corrected.
It's well produced and executed, with intelligent plot and good actors. If you enjoyed series like Homeland, Narcos, The Looming Tower etc, you will enjoy Jack Ryan as well.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
What a disappointment!
I have waited my whole life to see this story adapted for the screen. I was obsessed with these books.
What we have here is a cheaply made (frugality, Amazon?) fantasy series that is not engaging, nor interesting. When I found out that the adaptation will be produced by Amazon, I knew it cannot be good. They've never reached the HBO level, not even the level of Netflix (Witcher is still better even if we can feel that the budget was lower than GOT).
What I specifically don't like about this adaptation? Rand is bland and almost invisible. He should be the pivotal character of the story and we really don't feel it. WOT is a typical chosen one saga and as such should at least make the main character compelling and charismatic. For now Rand is a background character with zero charisma.
The chosen-one archetype, so crucial to the story, is completely destroyed by alternations to the original version which does not have any sense.
Special effects are Xena like. Seriously. The only exception is Fade - I really like how they're made even if they make you think of Dementors or Nazguls.
There is absolutely no introduction into the world that would be magic, mysterious or at least interesting.
How can you not start the series with the invocation of the wheel of time myth that every book starts with is beyond me. I mean look at LOTR, they knew exactly how to take what is already perfect in the book and to use it in the way that you feel like entering a magic world with the very first second of the movie. What Rosamund Pike is reciting at the beginning of the first episode sounds like a draft note made quickly by someone for the production.
Casting is decent though. Rosamund Pike is perfect as Moiraine. Egwene, Nynaeve and Lan are convincing as well. Rand seems like a good choice, but it's still hard to say as he's barely present on the screen.
Gosh I hope that next episodes will be better than what we have seen so far...
Le prénom (2012)
Funny, eloquent French comedy but I can't forgive the dog part!
The movie is funny, slick and clever. If you like French humour, you will enjoy it. It's all about conversations, discussions, friendship and old secrets. Very well played and engaging.
What I couldn't forgive is the dog part. I really don't like the way this situation was portrayed and I lost sympathy to the characters involved. It was really in bad taste...
New Amsterdam (2018)
Poor writing, the rest is fine
This is the first time that I watch a good series and get distracted every now and then by awkward, unnatural dialogues and really poor psychology of behaviours. Just something is honestly not right here, as if the script was written simultaneously by a very good and a very cheap writer. Was it?:/
Hunters (2020)
Such a disappointment! And I waited so long for this series...
A comic manière and a Tarantino-wanna-be style. I waited for this series impatiently and this is what we got... I hoped for something like "Homeland" taking place after the war. Oh, I was deceived.
