Broadchurch (2013)
engrossing
This is such an engrossing series. I watched all of season 1(8 episodes) in 1 afternoon. I didn't know there were more seasons.
I loved that it defies expectations at every turn.
At first it seemed like the sugar-coated ode to the small town with a bad apple to be excised.
Then it looked like the woman is unjustifiably denied the job and outshines the man theme.
Then it looked like Mark was secretly having a gay affair and wanted to hide it.
Each character looks guilty and, then.is not.
Miller looks like the normal, likable.sensible one against her bosses bumbling social misfit persona.
Each character is not what we thought they were.
The ending was a surprise until the last scene(size 10)
The ending made us look differently at each of the characters.
Overall brilliant! It sets a high bar.
Banged Up Abroad: Ecuador - Breaking Bad in Britain (2018)
good quality program
The program is really well done. My complaint is not re the art and production.
My concern is that Peter shows no moral compunction but is concerned re himself and 1 other person-no concern re fostering cocaine addiction???
Banged Up Abroad: Hunting Mr Nice (2013)
remorse???
Did either of them have any concern for the people who became addicted to Cocaine???
The only problems for them are the there own suffering from being caught and the effect on their own family???
Sisters of War (2010)
myopic and misleading
Australia ,as part of the UK,was very active in fighting and bombing in Europe and the Pacific.
This film portrays a lot of goody ,goody little sitting ducks by focusing on one tiny part of the effort.
Australia desperately needed the Allies.
An Ordinary Hero: The True Story of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland (2013)
an icy hero
This was the story many of us find familiar with a central character,Joan, who I has not known about.
I find stories and film re the Civil Rights movement very absorbing and moving but what limited this film for me is Joan's dismissal and obliteration of northern white women with their(our) "strange accents" and ways.
I felt that she was slamming the door on us.
As she was fighting for rights she was proclaiming "I'm a Southerner."
So I couldn't embrace this film as I had others of the genre.
Scott & Bailey (2011)
hard to understand
This series looks very appealing,in the tradition of Cagney and Lacey. Unfortunately, I can't understand much of what the characters are saying. I tried to guess by just watching the scenes and trying to infer from what I see but I've given up on understanding what's going on.It is partly the English accents but I don't have a problem, for the most part, understanding Downton or Doc Martin or,actually any of the other English programs.
I will tune in now and then to see if I fare better. It's a shame to miss what looks like a good series. At times, the characters seem to be mumbling and slurring words.
