Head in the Clouds (2004)
Hurra, the glory belongs to Theron!!
Directly after watching Theron's highly acclaimed movie "the Monster", I immediately turned to her next, namely the subject here "Head in the clouds". Although I understand little about what this title means. But Theron's performance in that film is simply convincing and brilliant. Purely from her appearance I already give the film 7 stars.
In the monster, Theron has totally deformed herself. 30 pounds weight gain. Amazing, but meanwhile her makeup there also totally destroyed her impression in my mind--ugly and rough, disgusting. Because she had so successfully embodied Lee, the title role, she won a dozen prizes for it, at the price of her image of course. After all, I prefer that sweet Theron.
In the "the Italian job" she had once showed the sweetness. Here in Head in the clouds the second time. Gilda is a very complex person. She lived at first quite cynically, never invested her emotion at any thing. But after meeting Guy, she changed. Even that hasn't help her to survive the war. Her tragic end of life is heartbreaking, without letting people know what good she had done during the war. Even though she was a playgirl, she is the most emotional character in the whole movie.
The Arena (1974)
Best of this genre
I still remember, how excited I got when I first saw this film in VCD back to the 1990s. It was just a wonderful surprise to have rented a film so entertaining and provoking.
If you try stubbornly to take this film with the 21st production for its acting, or video definition and so fort. I have to say, you are just making yourself unnecessarily unhappy. True, the actresses hadn't gone that far in some sections, for the film is neither the porno nor the violence type. So save your hard criticism.
The plot was really a good one. Pace is tight, hasn't let you have time leave to have a break. The idea is also amazing, letting the women slaves fight each other. The happy ending satisfies me, for I can't digest so many and so often tragedies.
Markov is a very beautiful and elegant actress. This blond gladiator really hold the entire movie interesting. Can't image how the film were going to look like without this gorgeous female.
Enchanted (2007)
Amy Adams shines totally!!
Disney's Production is always a guaranty for quality. That fairy atmosphere, music with childish spirit. It is really a wonderful experience watching this film. I kept telling myself in the watching that I am enjoying a cheerful film.
Amy Adams sparkles. Her appearance is so sunny. All three of her dresses are masterpiece, elegant, pretty and unique. Without those fairy songs, Giselle would lose at least half of her charm. But it fortunately isn't the truth! The musical pieces are carefully written, they reminds me of another Disney's production: The parent trap, also having first-class music. Although Amy couldn't sing "in situ"(obviously she acted soundless in scenes and her song voice was post-added.), but it doesn't burden that much. I can still lose myself deeply in her musical world.
By the way, the little Morgen Rachel also wins her own credit. Such a sweet girl (if I am allowed to say, twice so sweet as Giselle).
Finally, the whole film is an unforgettable sensation. I am always looking forward Disney's works. Keep on!
The Woman in Black (1989)
A dull story. But the black woman was really thrilling.
This movie made me a bad sleep the night before. Just because the black woman's face was too terrible. But as a feature of the movie, she is a success. Without her I will delete the movie as soon as I finished it.
But the film doesn't quite get the essence of a scary movie. I remember a great example of this genre: the Japanese "the ring" (first). The atmosphere there is between "reality" and "ghost". Something you can not explain with your experience can even make you think it is acceptable. Because the ghost can something you can't image.
But this movie doesn't. You always feel that, you are really in the real world. The black woman and all the scream is just the result of that man's paranoid. If so, the whole film is just someone's imagination. That does not deserve my 2 hours sitting time. I think.
