Padre Pio (II) (2022)
5/10
Not quite enough to quell the anticipation
3 June 2023
I've genuinely anticipated this movie, especially after the multiple pushbacks of the release date. I even saw the interviews LaBeouf has done about the sincerity behind his role as Padre Pio and conversion to Catholicism.

Unfortunately, the following of the political unfolding was very mundane and bare. And worse off, there was minimal tie between the current events to Padre Pio's influence on the people outside of maybe the Eucharist and a couple confessions.

I certainly can say every scene LaBeouf was in, he carried extremely well, but these were sparsely placed throughout the film, and felt very removed from the rest of the movie. However, these scenes still did have a depth and spiritual sense of sacredness that I wish pervaded more of the movie. The moments of his anguish and torment were compelling, but short lived, especially because they were juxtaposed against the aforementioned weakness of the exterior events.

When showing the forced labor the villagers were facing, the cinematography was very jagged and disorienting. I understand it was meant to instill a sense of anxiety and arduousness against the still, calm lensing of Pio's sanctuary, but it was so pronounced that it was just distracting and dizzying. I could get used to an Oliver Wood style of camera shake in an action movie, but it didn't work with this film.

There was little to no tension to the storyline to really illicit a yearn for resolution. Because of this, the film lacked emotional substance, and not stakes. I'm usually content with slower paced movies as long as there's still a sense of building tension.

Again, Shia's performance did stand out, but outside of that, I'm afraid to say this movie really did not carry the viewer through the depth and influence of Padre Pio. Not Shia's fault, more on the writers and director.

I think a better film around this monastic spiritual genre would be "Of Gods and Men."

The haters missed the point...
5 September 2021
This movie is special and unique to other movies.

This movies seeks to look into what it means to be human, as any good sci-fi flick should do. It looks at love, memory, life, death, vanity, depth, pain. All through the clever lens of a person who experiences realty outside the constraints of time that the rest of us have. It showcases the beauty of intimacy and sex, and integral it is to humanity.

To those who said it's just randomness, you missed the point. This is a tale of a person that experiences their life while they can see the future, live through multiple different timelines, and remember it all. It would seem disjointed to us because it's not how we normally experience the passage of events.

It's clear many of these Reviewers haven't seen Quality Sci-Fi Flicks

Warning: Spoilers
Although I wouldn't count it as irredeemable, let me explain my grievances: First of all, it was extremely disjointed and rushed. The transitions between scene and plot points were very abrupt and sudden. It didn't really have much of a sense of flow.

There was so little character development that I felt relatively disconnected from the characters so I didn't really care when they were killed off. It looked like they overdid it with the visual and editing gymnastics. They tried TOO hard to give it a "flare" (pun fully intended).

I DID, however, really appreciate the actual visualization of the sun and the space suits and what not. The yellow, "hot" vibe is something I haven't really seen before so I respected them really embracing that theme.

The music was definitely replaceable, and I was pretty distracted with all the sounds they had when they were in space (there's no sound in space). I know you said it was scientifically inaccurate, but that was still quite a turn off. Not to mention when they did the actual risk assessment at the beginning, the supposedly "smart" physics dude only considered ONE of the TWO risks they were trying balance to make a humanity-saving decision, and that ticked me off lol.

There a lot of seemingly unnecessary conflict and/or moments of praise that felt inorganic and artificial. For example, when the whole crew cheered at the two guys merely announcing that they would BE ABLE to fix the solar panels, not even that they succeeded in fixing them. The AI lady (or whatever the ship's voice was) was overly expository.

Unfortunately, as much as I did respect their attempt at originality, there was more distractingly bad with this one than there was good. And I literally couldn't bear it!

I hold a pretty high standard for cinema, but can still appreciate ideas. I would hold the movie "High Life" above this one!

Astonishing
30 December 2018
All the hate reviews for this view are typical. "Executed poorly," "other movies did it better," etc etc! This movie not only twists in itself, but twists in the participants. It made me and my bro stay you all night discussing free will and reality. If you understand it fully, and use it's concepts as a philosphical discussion point, you will find yourself very entertained. This movie goes further than it's runtime!

SPECTACULAR DEPICTION!!
22 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
****SLIGHT SPOILERS!**** The only reason I did not give 10/10 is because it doesn't not fully stay true to the actual timeline in real life. HOWEVER, this movie expertly developments the characters and not only lets you in on, but engulfes you in their thoughts and surrounds you in their life. The plot is developed extremely well! But one of my favorite parts was the ending. I have NEVER felt like I was actually at a live concert event like I did with this movie! Totally felt like I was back in time. The color, sound, and energy was surreally realistic! I highly recommend this film!!

Although most hated, I did not think it that bad!
13 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Everyone hated this one! However, I didn't think it was that bad. Yea sure it was not the strongest story line, and it wasn't the most original plot (aliens always gotta be picking on earth). The part I liked the most was the respect for our former veterans. It showed them as back in their old days, excited, pumped, and ready for action. I found this instance heart warming and an honorable thing to put in the movie. There was some unnecessary destruction to innocent lives, but pretty much all movies in this genre have that! It had a story, it had decent acting, good effects and sounds, good music. I do not see why there are such dramatic haters. Perhaps they just want to hate it? Nonetheless, I rather enjoyed it. It was entertaining, and definitely was not a dramatic waste of time as some have put. Watch it and see for yourself!
