The El Duce Tapes (2019)
Brilliant Documentary - Watch It
A brilliant documentary. It's incredibly well edited and put together. Not so much sad as other reviewers have pointed out, more fascinating. That people exist like El Duce is truly interesting, a complex, flawed, ultimately likeable and flawed man. This is one I'll rewatch as it's a lot to take in, in one go, but I'd like to spend more time with the people here. Nobody comes across bad, they come across real, with no filter which is refreshing nowadays. Do yourself a favour and watch this, I've already recommended it to all my friends, a true hidden gem!
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
A Masterpiece if Modern Filmmaking - Exceptionally Brave
Honestly a masterpiece. Brought thoughts of Ken Russell and the bravest of film makers (which all musical directors should be to counteract the preposterousnlus).
L'altrove (2000)
Not that bad - actually quite enjoyable!
I thought this movie wasn't that bad at all. I picked it up in Tower Records for 5.99 euro and wasn't expecting much! I was pleasantly surprised that there are were a few scenes of heightened tension and the camera-work was even half decent. The story is a little weak and could do with a bit more exposition and polishing to fill in the gaps. All in all its adequate and effective.
The acting isn't that bad but is quite amateurish. The sets used are really good and could easily be reused in a big budget movie. Other stuff such as costumes and lighting are quite good.
The movie is shot on digital so it has that unnatural sharpness of digital movies which I personally hate but I got over it after a little while.
Overall, I would recommend it to fans of movies such as the Blair Witch Project as it requires a slight leap of imagination to get over the overall cheapness. Worth a watch at least!
Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
A Masterpiece of Art and Intellectualism
Passolini's movie is without a doubt the closest that we will ever come to seeing a filmed version of the 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade. Not only is it taken from the novel almost verbatim but it is brought bang up to date with the blatant overtones of Fascism and Fetishism and how they go hand in hand.
I personally cannot recommend this movie enough. It will leave you disgusted, intrigued but ultimately satisfied. It would be easy to assume that this film is mere exploitation but this is not the case. The film is beautifully shot and superbly acted. Direction is tight and the set design is as sparse and cold as the subject matter. For those seeking an easy viewing experience I advise you to look elsewhere and those of a sensitive disposition should most definitely not view it.
