Cunk on Earth (2022)
Incredibly Funny
Pre-facing this by highlighting the fact that this character is from another series, so effectively a spin-off. She's supposed to represent the most obnoxious, moronic views of society obviously blown up X 50.
A lot of the negative reviews on here seem to come from Americans, who just don't seem to get it (there are lots of great reviews from Americans too though). Something in the sense of humour in this seems to be lost. The other bad reviews are from people who take themselves too seriously.
It's an outright hysterical tv show, which is incredibly well written and delivered with the comic precision my Diane Morgan. It should be a minimum 9.
Daybreak (2019)
Don't let the right-wing reviewers ruin it
As with Watchmen, anything remotely left leaning that these people even get a sniff of and they're here writing their reviews how it's 'preachy' or 'snowflake' humour. Unfortunately it ruins the average for what is a solid/somewhat predictable show with enjoyable parts and a good ending.
Don't let the fash put you off with their ratings.
No somos animales (2013)
Worst film ever.
This might be the worst film I've ever seen. Oozes pretentiousness. Has no plot. Isn't funny. Lacks characters do nothing to endear you to them. They have no arc. And now they're making me write 5 lines on it, but I just had to write a review so nobody else fell in the trap of watching this film. It's also stupidly long considering that NOTHING happens. How it has an average so high I'll never know. End of story.
The Grand Tour (2016)
Does nobody else sense the irony?
I've been a fan of Top Gear for a while, it'd become staple to a lot of British family Sunday night viewing for a while.
I've decided that to aid my review of the Grand Tour, historical context is necessary.
For me, Top Gear, up until the departure of Clarkson et al, can be broken down into three main sections. In the beginning, it was a show for real enthusiasts, with boiled down reviews of cars, getting in to the real 'nitty gritty'. I must confess, despite my initial claim of being a fan, this era did not really appeal to me, not being a 'petrol head' and probably too young to appreciate, but nonetheless, I continue.
Then came the Golden Age, which almost seems like it began with the attempted destruction of the Toyota, rolling on into other moments, such trying to get the classic Super Cars to a lap dancing club, building car boats etc, etc. Now, I must be clear, that is not to say that the nature of the task was the be all and end all. The general camaraderie, mischievousness and wit of the three protagonists brought it all together into some classic television. This mix of chemistry in having three 'mates' on screen, as well as what at the time seemed only loose scripting, with want of a better way of phrasing it, just worked.
Then came the third era of Top Gear. Now I am not naive enough to believe that none of the 'Golden Era' was contrived, but in this epoch, it became more obviously contrived and scripted. They started to fall into the category of being type-cast by their own characteristics, and eliminating the chemistry, but there still remained parts which would make you laugh, when that chemistry surfaced through.
This then brings me to The Guided Tour. With the budget afforded, it had to be expected it would perhaps be slightly more 'glam' or 'showy'. What I wasn't hoping for was a continuation of 'three amigos' being type-cast. However, this has been exploded in epic proportions. It's almost like they've been employed as actors to play themselves. They're now hyper-exaggerations of their original selves.
The bickering and mischief that used to bring around a smirk and a smile is now falser than the guests at a Kardashian Wedding. Mr May's methodical if not time consuming approach, is now just time consuming. Mr Hammond's boyish charm was never interpreted as stupidity. He's now become the dimwitted one. Turning to Mr Clarkson, it almost used to feel like keeping him on a leash in terms of his remarks, made them all the better, more biting when they were 'let slip'. Now he is more of a brash, brainless, oaf.
It's become almost so it seems that they have become so scripted that very little of the natural chemistry is allowed to shine through. It's evident in the in-studio segments, for which in the Grand Tour, I have very little time for. I would draw comparisons to U.S. 'Late Night' shows, in which the scripted comedy, isn't, well, very funny. Yet we all know, being left to their own devices, they are certainly most capable of being the characters we have grown to love.
Yes it is still early days, it may well improve, I'm probably being harsh, but like the old habit, I will still continue to watch but each time I do, I just know there's better things out there.
This all started me thinking. Myself, wanting to return to the ways of old, when people could say what they want, act in ways which hurt other people's feelings with little care for political correctness, the tenets of Top Gear in it's Golden Age. I have in fact, become Clarkson, but I'm doing a damn sight better job of it than he is at the moment.
