Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Masterpiece
When I first saw this movie in the theaters, I was only moderately impressed. I'm not a big fan of Russel Crowe, but he is certainly one of the best actors of our time. After seeing this movie a few more times on TV since, I've now come to really enjoy it. It's just so well done. It's a credit to the masterful Peter Weir who kicked butt on the Truman Show as well. He is an intelligent director who doesn't have to have a neatly wrapped Hollywood happy ending with his films. Master and Commander is strangely satisfying, exciting, touching, and suspenseful all at the same time. Russell Crowe really wears this role well. Paul Bettany is a fantastic actor as well, and takes on the doctor role here with skill I thought. It's definitely worth the price of admission.
Testosterone (2003)
Not That Bad, Actually
This film was certainly flawed and missed some great opportunities to be a lot better but it really wasn't that bad. I watched it from start to finish and that says a lot about a movie to me. It was not art, but I was certainly entertained. The ironic part of this film was that Antonio was really not that interesting on the screen. All the other actors and actresses were far more intriguing and Antonio's character was probably more important than the actor himself. This movie's only true downfall was that it didn't really capture its "theme" well enough to give the movie an overall point. Also, it was probably just a tad bit too convoluted. It's worth the 90 minute time investment, though, cause it's at least entertaining..
Daydream Obsession (2003)
Could've been so much better..
This was obviously meant to be softcore porn? The problem was that it wasn't even "good" porn. If they wanted to make a gay porn movie, they should've actually had some sex! On the flip side, they could've easily made a really decent independent movie. The main character I thought did a great acting stint during his little video monologues. There's one right before the climax of the movie that I especially enjoyed ... perhaps that alone is worth the price of admission... Overall, though, this movie is probably a pass. It could've been much more, but they went the softcore route instead. I can't stand to see good possibilities get squandered. If you're bored, though (and you'd probably need to either be gay or have an appreciation for the male form), the movie will keep you awake for 90 minutes. I guess that's something??
