Yellowstone (2018)
Perpetuates a poor image
Did the producers ever consider what this fouldmouthed series would do the the image of Montana and the USA at large. Here you have a bunch of low lifes who think they are all above the law and who run or want to run Montana as if it was their personal fiefdom. Adherence to civilized, ethical behaviour goes out of the window and that includes the native tribe whose sole interest seems to be to grab the land they claim they once lost and build a casino. I have also raraley ever seen a series or movie where every second sentence must include the f...word. Truly a society that seems to be unable to remember more than a 200 word vocabulary. This all does nothing to hold the USA and its society in the kind of esteem that it should deserve. The screenwriter and director should be sacked.
Good Witch (2015)
Tiring
The characters become more and more unrealistic. There you have Nick, the selfish, difficult Gen-Z teenager who has no idead what he is or what he wants. A father who time for his regular shop visits, little tiome for his medical climic (hs seems unqualified) and even less time to put his son right, then you have Abigail whose only inteerst in life seems to exhibit her narcistic nature and run after every guy that looks into her eyes. She is incompetent but does think highly about herself. A cingeworthy mayor who would not last more than 2 weeks in her job. And so on. Is this to be a copy of life in a small American town ? I hope not.
Outlander (2014)
It started so well
... and then came Season 4 and things went downhill and now season 5 which presents us with shoddy, cringeworthy script writing. The cliches of episode 8 are something to behold. Please change the scriptwriter and let Brianna and Robert disappear.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
One of the worst movies of all times
Contrieved story line, substandard acting and poor behaviour and jokes all rolled into one. You want to project a poor image of certain American women, here you got it. All of them seem to be preoccupied with their hairdoos or their fingernails and to top it off getting a baby when it is medically suicide. Surrounded by men who act like boys and boys who act like crazy toddlers. Dialogues that are cringeworthy from beginning to end. If you can - avoid such people and such movies.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
This TV Show could be much better
If it would have dropped the story of a Revlon Sales Girl and Phone Operator aspiring to be a lame comic talent. It also begs to ask the question why stand-up artists need to use foul language and the f-word in every second sentence in order to be funny. How "funny" is it really to talk about whether the Pope has a "hard on"? Would the producer have dared to connect any other religion (Buddhists, Hindu or Muslim) with such disparaging sexual innuendos ? Highly objectionable all this. Anyhow the "jokes" of the marvelous Mrs. Maisel are mostly not funny at all and full of cliches and platitudes. She would have deserved a better script for her performances. And her obnoxious sidekick Susie seems to have more of a bad than a positive influence on her. But, the rest of the story - that IS FUNNY and great entertainment.
Only the Brave (2017)
Was this praiseworthy?
I guess you need to be an American or a fireman or someone deeply affected by the tragedy that unveils itself in the last stages of the movie in order to fully appreciate this film. This is nevertheless a story that should have deserved better scripting and better acting. In short:
Story: 10 out of 10
Script: 2 out of 10
Dialogies: 2 out of 10 (cringeworthy mostly)
Acting: 2 out of 10
The story deserves a remake
Hand of God (2014)
Made me worry
about one thing only and that is why in every second sentence the f-word needs to be used. Do Americans really talk like that ? Is it really necessary for script writers and film directors to present us with gutter language when in reality they want to present a good story ? I do not think so. Otherwise this is a really unusual story with its rare mix of religion - TV evangelism style - and crime all set in what is mostly an upper class setting. The story surrounding P.J. and his comatose state is gripping. Many families in similar situations will find this very realistically and still sensitively portrayed. The acting is generally excellent, the script believable but as I said: too much use of the f-word and that irritates at lot.
Hachikô monogatari (1987)
Seen once and not forgotten
We saw this movie once on Hong Kong Television when we lived there until the year 2000 and remember it as a true tear jerker but in a positive sense.
It stuck in our memories for all those years which must mean something; and it may therefore mean a great deal to people who are not yet to emotionally in such deep freeze that the story of Hachiko can no longer warm their hearts.
If I recall correctly the original was in Japanese but it had English subtitles.
In the last four years we have tried to buy a copy but cannot find any.
Thankful for any pointers in that direction
