Nefarious (2023)
Really great acting, bad ending
I was surprisingly amazed by the acting of Edward/the demon. His performance really sucked me in and I even felt sorry every time Edward got allowed to speak. The dialogue (or even monologue sometimes) is near flawless. Even the conservative backtone didn't break the spell. This alone makes the movie worth it.
However, the last 10 or 15 minutes ruined it for me. The scene in the cell is the last scene with it. After that the movie takes a turn towards cheap cliches and mediocre acting. I truly was hoping for a great ending. Something that would leave the viewer thinking. Unfortunately it ends like every b-movie in the horror/thriller genre. Such a shame.
Still I give it a 7/10 for the first three quarters of the movie.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Like watching someone else play a shoot-em-up
Yes, I watched all 4 movies.
No, I didn't like any of them.
Yes, that makes no sense.
No, I can't explain.
Somehow, I hoped the next iteration of this series would be different. Have more story. Make more sense. But all 4 movies are well made fight scenes with a bit of story added to make it into a movie.
Now it did my head in how these movies get such high rating. Then it dawned on me that kids these days love watching others play games like Roblox or Call of Duty. This movie is tailor-made for these audiences.
The movie feels like a game with a bit of story with a bit of acting and then you fight. Kill all the bad guys from level 1 and unlock the story-scene toward level 2 until you get to the end boss.
So my 4-stars are based on this being a movie. It's slick and looks good, so that's 4 stars. But the other ingredients a movie needs, like acting, storyline and character development, are non-existent.
Annette (2021)
Wanted to like it
Maybe my expectations were set to high because I loved Holy Motors so much. I loved the weirdness, the choreography, the cinematography.
I found Annette promising in the first twenty minutes. The comedy performance of Henry was well done and I love the extra layer of the audience becoming part of the show was a meta layer to the movie I was watching.
The movie was weird, but not weird enough.
Let me come forward and confess that I didn't finish the movie. After an hour I couldn't take it anymore. I became bored. Why?
-The songs were dull and the lyrics were so repetitious.
-The story was dragging and slow.
-The movie didn't give me something to hold on to.
-It wasn't weird enough.
Maybe the second part of the movie made all of this right, but I couldn't bear to watch it any longer. And I'm not the type to leave a movie half watched.
I really wanted to like it.
The Rehearsal (2022)
Louis Theroux in Synecdoche New York
The first episode was just fun.
The second was like the first.
But from there on things started to evolve deeper and weirder. So many layers started to unravel and it's both absurdist as well as heart felt.
Nathan Fielder hadn't been on my radar but I'm a fan now.
Joe Pera Talks with You (2018)
A cure for cynicism
The only thing I can compare Joe Pera with, is Bob Ross making a sitcom.
It's so pure, relaxing, minimalistic, heart warming and I love watching it before going to bed to wash the daily cynicism off.
I want to be more like Joe Pera.
The Adam Project (2022)
A popcorn worthy fun dramemy-fi (except for the young Keener!)
There's not a lot that needs to be said about this movie. It looks good. It's funny at times. It had me tear up at the right moments. The acting is sufficient. There's just one thing that had me shrivel in horror and that's the absolutely distractiongly bad job at creating a young cgi Keener. Those scenes had me squint my eyes not to let it ruin the movie for me. I have a feeling YouTube will be filled to the brim with people discussing the horrible cgi done on that. Why didn't they use current Keener for the young version and just grimed her to look older. She's a good looking woman.
So my advice is basically: squint your eyes every time cgi Keener appears on screen or watch it in horror.
The Shivering Truth (2018)
Quality content for a niche group
I love it when a series or film can truly baffle, surprise or freak me out. The Shivering Truth does all of that. The animations are great but be sure to mind the sound. No drugs are needed to ride this trip.
"Normal" people won't like this, but lovers of weird will get exactly what they need. Highly recommended for a specific group of viewers.
Tropical Cop Tales (2018)
Only for weird-lovers
I'm a big sucker for weird series and films like Wrong, Rubber, The Greasy Strangler, Tigtone or Tim & Eric. Most reviews mistake weirdness and randomness for bad errr.. making of stuff.
It was made for a special niche and for me, it hits the mark. Excellent scalp!
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson: They said that to me at a dinner. (2021)
What happened?
I take enjoyed season 1. I loved the weirdness of the jokes and especially the way they were brought cinematographically. I've watched two episodes of season two and it's like an essential ingredient has been left out. I can't put my finger on it but I simply didn't enjoy watching it anymore.
Shaft (2019)
Bad acting and NRA sponsored
The main character in this movie is not the protagonist or Samuel, but the gun. The girlfriend is very pretty and starts looking in love when her friendzoned friend starts using a gun. After a shout-out his mother starts asking her about the gun. The characters in this movie have more chemistry with the guns than each other.
