The Babadook (2014)
"The Babadook" - an interesting horror movie with pretty good acting
Clearly, people who are giving this movie a 1-star review have no idea what makes a horror movie good.
At first sight, when you start watching this movie your first question will be:"Are these actors that bad or they are literally becoming some psychotic characters?". And yes, as you watch the movie you will figure it out how the actors and their characters are the same person. In the last couple of years the majority of actors featured in horror movies had their acting extremely mediocre, like all they wanted to do is simply say their lines and then go home. But is not the case in "The Babadook". When I first saw Samuel (Noah Wiseman) I really believed his acting was bad, but after a couple of scenes I realized how good his acting was as you truly believe there is something wrong with this boy or that he is simply mad.
True, the special effects aren't the best (some of them are quite pathetic if you ask me) however these are not stopping the movie from being a good one. There is a constant tense and fear in this movie, intensified by the soundtrack and common noises (doors opening, floor cracking and so on), but these sounds are the right ones at the right time.
When it comes to storyline, you can say it's a pretty original idea (as for me, I think I never heard of the word "Babadook"). There are a few moments in the story where you will find the mother's and boy's dialogues as being annoying, due to Samuel's hysterical screams, but this is an important part of his character.
Overall, I think "The Babadook" is an interesting and good movie and it reminds you of the classic horror movies of the '90s.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
A great story with a great action and good acting
Oh my gosh, where should I start? This movie was simply awesome. At first, I was very skeptical about it because I knew how good was the first Jumanji movie, however I decided to give it a try and it was absolutely worth it.
The story is very well constructed as the audience can quickly understand the plot, without being puzzled or confused which would've been frustrating, of course. From the very beginning you can see the main cause that leads to the entire action, which for me is awesome, because I hate movies who need like an hour in order to get into action and they are boring the audience until then. I appreciated the combination between the entire action and comedy elements which were extremely well introduced and executed by the actors. The dialogues between the characters are cursive, without many "dead moments" and easy to follow.
The characters are also very diverse and well-constructed as we have some stereotypes here: the nerd, the hot girl, the tough guy and the shy girl. Exactly this diversity between them helps the characters to form a team and fulfill their objective: rescue Jumanji. What's even more interesting is that this stereotypes are switching between them as soon as the characters are entering the game.
What could've been done better about this movie is the CGI which is rather acceptable, than good, but oh well, you cannot have them all in a movie, right?
Overall, this movie deserves your time and I recommend it, especially to those of you who are gamers.
The Last Exorcism (2010)
The action takes place in the last 10 minutes
I was waiting to see this movie, because the trailer looked promising and I said to give it a chance, bu the disappointment came quickly in the first half an hour. I extremely hate when directors make a scenario of a horror movie in which they make the action as if it was some sort of documentary or personal journal of the action. I mean Daniel Stamm has a lot to learn about the horror genre, because in my opinion this genre doesn't suits him as his ideas of horror movies are old-school and they lack originality and action. This is not the proper scenario for a horror movie, because the audience wants so see some action, some great CGI or some great acting, not some pathetic low-budget actors and a low-budget scenario. And this is what "The Last Exorcism" is all about.
All you can see in this movie is just talking and talking about what church, religion, demons, God means which is such a cliche and a brief action in the last 10 minutes to compensate for the whole boring movie.
In other words, don't waste your time with this movie.
Incarnate (2016)
Interesting idea, kinda well applied in the scenario, without the usual demonic possession cliche
I was very skeptical in seeing this movie, because in the last years all of the horror movies (except for few titles, and believe me, I devoured the horror genre since I started watching movies) were extremely disappointing, with a very generic scenario and lots of cliches, not to mention poor dialogues, lots of plot holes and so on.
But today I decided to give this movie a chance, because the main idea of how the victims are "exorcised" got me intrigued. It was a pleasant surprise to not see the ordinary Bible, Holy water and prayers involved in an exorcism, but something that's rather scientific and psychological. The action is very intense, not because of jumpscares and loud soundtrack, but because of that intense psychological battle between Dr. Ember and the victims. At some point the scenario is even puzzling you as an audience, because you cannot tell which of the characters are in the real world and which ones are living the illusion within the possession.
As I don't want to give much spoilers about the movie, I can tell you that it is worth your time. It is not the mother of horror movies, but it brings a new idea for the whole possession concept.
