The Suicide Squad (2021)
1 of the best superhero/supervillian movies
Definitely one of the best superhero/supervillian movies of all time. I felt the Suicide Squad had a lot of potential as a concept for a movie (Definitely a fan of the comics). Supervillians who "save" the earth has a lot of avenues and stories to explore.
James Gunn wholeheartedly made this sequel better than the first, as a sequel or quasi-reboot. The characters stand out & the humor (the humor is organic and doesn't feel corny like some Marvel movies, I'm looking at you The Marvels ) & violence is turned up to 10. Ratcatcher 2 seems to be the heart & soul of the movie as she is more emotional & compassionate than a standard "villian". There are many great shots and noteworthy scenes. Truly enjoyable. I wish this didn't come out during covid to see how it really could've done in the box office. I really hope there is a third one, just to explore more of the characters and see how well they interact. Definitely recommend it.
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003)
Shouldn't call itself a comedy
You can see where Chris Farley is sorely missed. David Spade looked like he checked out in some scenes, his acting lacked any emotion. He can't do a movie like this by himself. There are no real laughs in this movie. The movie feels like a bad sitcom, when it should be a satire on child sitcoms. There are too many comedic tropes and not enough genuinely funny moments. There is no chemistry/romance between the "mom" and Spade's character. They don't show any romantic interest so their inevitable marriage is not believable. There should've been more thought put into the script, rather than seeing how many former child actors they could cram in as cameos.
Overall, don't waste your time on this drivel. Unless you enjoy waiting for a funny joke that never arrives.
True Detective (2014)
Suspenseful show, just miss season #2
Please skip season #2 it is a distraction from the suspenseful, well written 1st & 3rd seasons. Season #2 pulls my score down from a 10. Vince Vaughn can't be taken seriously as a detective, when the show establishes detectives as cerebral mystery solvers. Season #2 over the top action & mindlessness seems so out of place. The 1st & 3rd seasons lay the groundwork for suspenseful and somber storytelling. The characters are played by great actors Harrelson, Mcconaughey Ali, Dorff and Ejogo. These are all flawed characters who seem to have the best intentions of solving their respective cases. I've always been a fan of serial killer mysteries when done right, think Seven or Silence of the Lambs. I can't wait for season four!!!
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
Such a let down
I was anticipating this show from 1 of my favorite directors, Del Toro. I thought it would be captivating & visually amazing like his earlier work. But instead got a Twilight Zone & Alfred Hitchcock Theatre rip off. The writing is incredibly lazy & not original. "Graveyard Rats" is stolen from stephen king's "Graveyard Shift", giant rat & all. For a Netflix show this will fit in nicely with all the mediocre shows and movies they have. The content has gotten worse after all media companies pulled their signature content. I wish he would've directed some of these episodes, rather than write a few and serve as producer.
Donnie Darko (2001)
1 of my fav movies of all time
Brilliantly deals w/complex issues of futility, existentialism, paranoia, & human interaction, as well as some scientific theories. The actors were great & helped u feel 4 them emotionally. 1 of the best coming of age stories w/o cliches. Def recommend this film!!!
Voyagers (2021)
This has a re-boot quality.
Basically it's "Lord of the Files" in space without the pathos.
Hereditary (2018)
A modern horror classic.
There is so much tension & suspense throughout the movie, between the family members & from outside elements. The director did his homework on what makes great horror, suspense & not jump scares. The family conflict adds to the uneasy feeling from all the sense of loss the film brings. The creepiness lingers after you leave the theater. That's great horror pathos.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Visually spectacular
This is the Justice League movie we all waited for as comic book fans. It's a feast for the eyes & has heart. The characters now have emotion & purpose compared to the 1st movie. The visuals are stunning. Props to the Snyder family for seeing this through(& a heartfelt dedication 2 their daughter, many blessings).
Your Honor (2020)
The opposite of Breaking Bad
This is a show based on a lie, which snowballs into a joke. It's a Three's Company sitcom episode set to a dramatic piece. The only thing that saves the weak premise is Cranton's acting which is top notch . Most of the cast is adequate. There is no motivational or emotional arc for the characters, so there's no need to care. In Breaking Bad there are character arcs that draw the viewer in & keep you invested in the characters. There is a dimension to the characters. In Your Honor just about everyone is a hollow, shallow character.
Bliss (2021)
So bad.
This is a horrible rip off of the Matrix & Eternal Sunshine... You are supposed to "believe" Salma & Owen are scientists & that gives away the twist of the movie right away. 45 minutes in & you'll ask what is happening & once you figure it out, you will be underwhelmed.
Joker (2019)
Really 9 1/2 stars
It's really that good, near perfect film. It wonderfully explores the complexities of mental illness & society's obligation to the individual in terms of care. Then delves into the socioeconomic divide in America & how it impacts lives. This movie has an R rating so I don't get the backlash against the violence. American history is filled with violence & movies from the seventies were way more violent & filled with more harsh adult themes than this film. Joaquin Phoenix does a riveting job of portraying a believable character, who is as much a product of society as society is of his world due to the harm he inflicts. A classic example of art imitating life. The director, Todd Phillips, brings grit to the camera as well as a marvelous score that is ominous as well as sets the metamorphosis of Joker. Definitely one of the best "comic book " films of all time. So much closer to the "Killing Joke" graphic novel than the animated movie.
Stranger Things (2016)
Suspenseful nostalgia
1st season was the best. It has the best balance of suspense & 80s humor. 2nd season helped to extend the saga of "little girl lost" & scary monsters, though not as good as the 1st, but still watchable . The 3rd season had too much sitcom humor & lacked the charm of the 1st season. Not enough scary moments. 1st season 9 stars, 2nd = 7 stars & 3rd = 5 stars.
White Chicks (2004)
Terrible from start 2 finish.
Thank GOD I saw this on cable & didn't go 2 the theater 2 c this tripe & drivel. If I could give this zero stars I would.
Captain Marvel (2019)
1st bad movie from marvel
This is a boring superhero movie, which shouldn't be. The lead actress is flat & can't hold the movie together. Nick fury is opposite of his character which is distracting. The story is mediocre at best & not compelling. This only made a billion dollars off of the marvel brand.
The Ruins (2008)
Could've been a better movie easily
The worst character is the 1 who lives & that accounts 4 my low rating on an otherwise solid horror movie. It would've sold the dread & bleakness better if all the characters had died. Some believability would've gone a long way.
Aquaman (2018)
Swimmingly good
Visually stunning. Solid story, just needed to be fleshed out with more dialogue. Fun from start to finish.
Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)
1 of My fav D.c. animated movies
Marvelous tension & drama. Many of my reviews include the line... this should be a live action d.c. universe movie. Nice action sequences as well.
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010)
Compelling stuff
A great story from the insightful writer Dwayne Mcduffie(R.i.paradise). Very thought provoking which is what entertainment should be, if it's not mindless popcorn fare. Loved the characterization & james woods played owlman sinister w/o being cheesy. These animation series should be the live action D.c. universe movies.
Bird Box (2018)
Nice thriller
Very similar to "a quiet place", but is thrilling in it's own right w/equally likable characters. Nice sense of tension.
