DumbLand (2002)
awesome.
I'm gonna tip the scales here a bit and say I enjoyed this. However, the cartoon is really only going to appeal to those who have very absurdist tendencies. It's definitely something that most people will not get, as is the nature of absurdism.
the animation is horrible, but yes, that's the point. The main character is foul mouthed, violent, and stupid. no redeeming qualities whatsoever. his wife shrieks and wails, apparently just barely capable of the most basic communication skills. most of these stories completely lack any kind of point.
but again, that's the point ;)
If non sequiters, foul language, and complete and utter randomness are your thing, you're going to love this.
It is really short, so I would probably rent instead of buying.
Darkness Falls (2003)
did somebody get water on these things? what's happening?
this movie just goes to show people will see about anything if it has enough fancy computer graphics.
also, is anybody else out there getting really tired of the old "really loud noise...ha! made you jump!" scare tactic?? and it almost always turns out to be something stupid, like maybe a cat jumping up or a bird flying past...and WHOOOMP sounds like the orchestra farted. i can't say i've seen a scary horror movie in a long time, because scares lately rely completely on shock value.
parts of movies that i can think of offhand right now that were really scary are like the first part of jeepers creepers, and the first part of house on haunted hill. you didn't know what to think, so it was very visceral. then, out pops generic big scary computer animated monster. woohoo.
movies lately aren't so much directed as they are programmed. sprinkled with a few obligatory sex scenes and some fancy special effects and yay, instant box office smash, just add overpriced concessions. damn i wish people would quit being so gullible, somebody needs to light a fire under these directors @$$es...give 'em something to work for! that's not even taking into consideration the awful script, with over-exaggerated, cheesy dialogue. these characters have about as much depth as an episode of the tellitubbies. their moods ranged from glum, to gloomy, to morbid, to stone faced serious. bring a book! so until Hollywood stops churning out this crap by the dozens...i guess i'll be staying away from theaters.
"you're living in some fantasy world that isn't centered around me, can't you see the flaw in your logic?" - jellineck from strangers with candy.
