The Killer (2023)
MEH
Surprised with the 5 stars on Netflix. But anyways, the plot line was too weak. OK a hit job went south, so why go after the assassin's girlfriend and that too in a half-assed manner and so on...Ok there is some style to it, but really weak otherwise.
Michael Fassbender is good, but not quite clear why he needs to kil whoever on sight. We already have had Day of the Jackal and a ton of assassin movies for years now, so definitely need better than this. I suppose its the reputation of David Lynch and Michael Fassbender that's the draw here. Even if remade with more 3-dimensional characters, it might still be weak given the lack of substance.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018)
puzzled at high rating...
Have no idea why this is film is rated so highly. It was downright disjoint. At some point all these bearded guys start looking the same. As is often the case, tried to compensate very little substance with too much style (attempted) - did not find it too stylish either.
Tides (2021)
Watchable but...
Watchable. But not quite there either.... One aspect to talk through is the parallel with Colonialism. Gibson does not kill other Keplers although he is ruthless with natives - he believed Keplers were superior to natives. Just like European colonialism considered "civilizing the world" the "white man's burden". The water did get to me (Waterworld seemed like a Disney version in comparison) - so much wetness with no sun had me squirming uncomfortably....
Toofaan (2021)
Pretty good
It's very Bollywood with songs and melodrama. But it was all right. Farhan Akhtar looks like a young rocky balboa. Yep given so much ubiquitous content anyone anywhere can get inspired by anything (e.g. Ali in this case). I guess terrorists and peoples habit of stereotyping, have contributed to bias against ordinary muslims world wide and India is no exception.
Monsoon Shootout (2013)
No one can make an informed decision given constraints of time/variables.
I guess it's a remake of several movies of this genre - where the same event gets played out multiple times - but without the scifi of moving back in time. But I found it mumbai-stylized -> monsoon, dogs, filth, corruption galore, the grime of the underworld etc.
Laxmii (2020)
Bad mish mash of genres...
Could not figure out if they were doing a horror or comedy or social messaging around Hindu/Muslim equality, superstition and gender equality (Well, since Akshay has done Toilet, Padman etc.) -> It turned out to be bad mish-mash of all the above. Akshay Kumar puts in a performance that can be described as "athletic"...
