Reviews
Ghost Child (2013)
Not as bad as the rating.
Maybe my review is biased because I'm a massive fan of east Asian horror, but the movie actually wasn't even that bad. It starts out a bit slow but as the plot unravels it becomes somewhat enjoyable. There are a lot of tense and eerie moments and I think the atmosphere throughout the entire movie was spot on.
The problem: its predictable and that makes it very uninteresting and a lot less scary. While watching this I was able to predict a 'scare' was coming right before it happened, and when it did it was mediocre at best.
I recommend seeing this if you have some time to kill, although I'm warning you its nothing special or memorable.
Parasaito Ivu (1997)
Emotionally captivating
The first half of this film is perfectly executed. It really takes a toll on you emotionally because you really get a chance to feel for toshiaki and all of the things he's going through.
In the second half of the film (when the "horror" portion starts) things take an odd twist. I have really mixed feelings about this half because in a way it didn't do the first half justice but at the same time it was an essential piece in bringing the two halves together.
I also don't understand why some people are saying the film was slow? The first hour of the film was CRUCIAL in developing the plot and characters for the second half.
All in all I really liked it, if you can appreciate the romance and the weird plot this movie has to offer I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
Zoo (2005)
NOT horror, but still worth a watch
First off let me start by saying that this is NOT horror. The atmosphere within these stories aren't creepy or scary in the slightest (apart from "Zoo" which has a creepy tone to it) and they seem to belong more in the thriller/drama/mystery categories.
With that said I actually really enjoyed this film as whole but I can't really put my finger on why. I just liked the atmospheres and the way the directors decided to portray the stories. The only complaint I have is that the true significance of some of the stories is never revealed which might leave people with a bitter taste in their mouth (if you're a fan of Asian cinema you should be used to it).
My personal favourite out of the 5 films: "Seven Rooms".
Definitely worth a watch for people who aren't expecting a blood-bath and are okay with watching some well-paced mysterious stories.
Kuchisake-onna (2007)
Cheesy and predictable, with mediocre acting... BUT I LOVED IT!
This is probably one of the cheesiest films I've seen in awhile. I'm really used to seeing perfectly executed scenes with extremely complex story lines so it was nice to watch a horror where I was able to just sit back, relax, and kind of 'laugh' at the holes in plot and the really cheesy physical violence scenes.
The plot is all over the place at the beginning but by the end, somehow they manage to successfully make sense of the main plot and subplots that took place throughout the movie.
"Kuchisake-onna" is different from most cheesy horror films I've seen because it actually evoked emotion. About 45 minutes or so in I was already rooting for the two lead characters, and there were also several moments throughout the film I actually found heartwarming.
This film deserves at least a 6.5 in my opinion, don't expect it to be the best movie you've ever seen and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Not what you'd expect. At all.
It's funny, it's thrilling, it's eerie, it's original.
Whatever expectations you have about this movie, forget about them because you are in for a big surprise.
This movie is great because it takes so many key elements from so many different genres. This movie will have you laughing in one scene, and then cringing from the brutal killing in the next!
The plot is not what you expect at all. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but just know that you won't be able to predict the outcome of the movie. In fact, you won't even know what the movie is about until the end!
I'll admit this really isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it a lot and recommend everyone to give it a shot.
