Une vraie jeune fille (1976)
Interesting. Not sexy.
Those are the things that happen to me all the time. Just a few days ago, I discovered this movie from a movie list and, after reading all the reviews and comments, I was curious and decided I wanted to see it. Well, as I was browsing the TV guide for something to watch, I found it was playing tonight on some Quebec french specialized channel.
I am just a guy, so I can't tell if that's really how teenage girls learn about their sexuality, but from the perspective of an adult male viewer, it's... well... unattractive.
It's a weird, slow pace movie, way different from what I have ever seen before, and probably different than any other possible movie.
Worth seeing, if you don't mind viewing genitals, both female and male.
Do not watch if you expect action, or if you expect a porno. Or if you dislike 30-year-old movies.
Recipe for Revenge (1998)
Thriller? Comedy? Romance? Loved the mix
I caught the movie while randomly seeking some entertainment as I was working on the computer. I finally found my self watching more of the movie than actually working.
*possible spoiler*
I must first say that I didn't know the movie came from an Harlequin book before I dropped on IMDb, so I had no expectation whatsoever regarding a possible romance. Although at some point it became obvious that something would eventually happen between the two characters.
*possible spoiler end*
I am unsure how I would categorize this movie between Thriller, Comedy and Romance since the three of those elements are very present from the very beginning up to the end.
Comedians are all great. I loved all of the characters, even the bad ones. Very well played and very credible.
Be assured, this is not another Whitney Houston's Bodyguard. While this might not be the movie of the year, it is one that I will surely want to see again sometime.
Antitrust (2001)
For once, it looks real
For once, a movie about computers where computers look real. The display on the monitors isn't just some 3D animation that seems to serve no purpose. You can recognize interfaces, or at least can imagine that on a real computer monitor. The code on screen looks real (it's either C++ or Java or some kind of C derivative), even though it probably doesn't do what they pretend it does; they don't show it long enough to figure out what it's suppose to do anyway.
Just some things I noticed: All IPs are 10.x.x.x, which is a range reserved for local networks, it should not be accessible remotely, thus would not be usable for a global system such as Synapse. But that is probably done on purpose, just like they do for phone numbers in the movies, all starting in 555-XXXX.
The networks seem to be freaking fast. In particular, for the data transmitted through the satellites with just about zero latency.
The CD burner is quite fast, it can burn a CD in just 20 seconds.
The server which Synapse is being distributed from seems to be very effective, taking millions of hits within hours. In particular, considering that they have never seen that many hits.
Beside the technical details presented, good movie, good action, good plot twists.
Edison (2005)
Barely OK
A friend invited me to watch a movie. She had rented Edisson Force.
For one, this is not really my kind of movie. But considering the genre, I kind of liked it. Let's mention I had no expectations at all, I didn't even know what it was about before it began.
The story, without being very strong nor very surprising, seemed OK to me. Just about average for the genre.
I liked it, but wouldn't watch it twice.
Regarding the French translation... The audio translation was just fine. I think it was a Quebec version (there were no 'bordel de merde'). However, I found that the subtitles for English text were quite irritating and more often pointless. They wasted their time translating signs of no importance at all, and even then, the translation was horrible and didn't really help. Even those with low English skills would be better reading the real thing. Why in the world did they need to subtitle "Force Spéciale" every time we saw a cop with the name of the organization printed on their back?
First Daughter (2004)
Cute Little Movie
I felt like watching a cute romance movie and I picked up First Daughter despite its bad rating in the media and all over the Internet. And I wasn't deceived.
I don't quite understand its bad rating, but that said I barely ever understand the rating for any movie. I found First Daughter to be a very nice movie in its category. What category is it in my mind? I'd say, a teen romance movie, but I won't put any emphasize on the word 'teen' here as this isn't what we'd expect from a 'teen movie'.
I thought the movie was about a girl who wished she was a normal girl of her age despite her status of First Daughter. At least, that was what I remembered from the trailer. Sure it is, but I didn't really anticipate that the second theme, romance (or should I say, teen romance), would be that strong. The mix of both themes is what gives the movie all its flavor and makes it stands out from other movies I've seen.
After she leaves the White House for college, Samantha meets James, a class mate, with whom she falls in love. But being the First Daughter, and thus being followed by bodyguards and photographs at all time, doesn't make it easy for a young girl looking for an intimate relationship.
