Recon (2019)
There appears to be an agreement here that whoever directed this knew nothing about WWII,
The Greatest Generation, military codes of conduct and discipline. There aren't many WWII heroes left today that would waste their time watching this insult to them, but somebody needs to speak up for them. I'm not old enough to have served in WWII but all my uncles did. They all had one thing in common, they never spoke about WWII. I can't believe many of these details are true and the worst ones were created by someone that was ever close to a WWII combat veteran. The M-1 Garand weighs almost 9 lbs. Nobody ever carried it cross body with crooked arms like it's portrayed here. It was our ROTC training weapon in the mid-''50s. It's sling was dual purpose,; ithe most comfortable way to carry the M-1 Garand on your shoulder and the sling helped steady the weapon in most shooting positions. The M-1 carbine was a pea shooter compared to the Garand, which was accurate and lethal at long distances. We heard stories after Korea of soldiers accidentally shot with the carbine while wearing full winter gear and the bullet fell out of the layers. The Garand 30-06 could be a thru & thru at those distances. I've seen Monte Casino in Italy, its below Rome...above Salerno. How could the wolf have been close to Switzerland? When the M-1 was fired in all directions, the clip must have been emptied. The clip is designed to spring out of the top of the weapon when empty. It makes a unique twang when it exits...didn't twang!
Ambulance (2022)
It's a Michael Bay movie exactly what you'd expect
He's just using more modern technology to add more thrills, but it still relies on age old car stunts. Another poster referred to it as a twist on Heat. I was thinking that, too, as I was watching. Except there were fewer big names and Cam played a paramedic better than any I've seen on a TV series. Her English was excellent for a someone where English was their 3rd language.
I thought she held the story together quite well. Anyone expecting medical reality and a happy ending will have been disappointed. That isn't how these thrillers normally turn out, but the ending was spot on for Cam's character.
Queen of the Amazon (2021)
All it needed was a script and some actors
The scenery was worthwhile, but couldn't carry the film. Nice little ship. A river tour on it might be an interesting voyage, espicially on the Amazon. The indigenous performers were the highlight. We don't often get to see scenes like that these days.
The Man from Toronto (2022)
Kind of a waste of $75 Million
Mostly slapstick but it had a few moments. I'm sure there was a plot somewhere in the far too long story. Not one of either of the feature male srars best. Though it was nice to see Ellen Barkin again, but it's not a role that I'll remember her in.
Gaslit (2022)
Ancient history well done with great makeup greatly distorted in parts for satirical purposes.
It's an election year spoof! Based on a podcast for the sole purpose of tainting one political party's leader's paranoid insecure obsession about another party. It was big news almost half a century ago.
The Aeronauts (2019)
I'm a former general aviation pilot and know the story line has historical errors, but the photography made up for it.
Flying above a cloud deck, seeing the shadow of your aircraft flying below you in the top of the cloud layer and 360 degree horizontal rainbows in the moisture above the clouds is an experience few others enjoy., Out here in California we see those marine layers coming off the Pacific regularly. It's always a joy when you climb thru the gray gloom of the overcast and break out on top to dazzling sunshine as far as you can see. Sometimes you are all alone up there for 100s of miles listening to ATC directions or giving very infrequent traffic advisories. It's like nothing else and this film put me rate back in the cockpit reliving memories. I couldn't care less that Mrs. Wren was a composite of other women balloon pioneers.
Horizon Line (2020)
Quite possibly the worst aviation related movie ever
The level of reality might be below zero. Any student pilot with 10 hours could write a list of at least a dozen impossibilities. I turned it off right after he fixed a fuel leak where no fuel line could exist. I should have earlier when they suffered hypoxia well below the time snd altitude it exists. Freddy never flew the plane at 20,000 feet without oxygen. Nobody with a few hours 2 years ago flies out of a towering Q storm having recovering from inverted and out of control attitudes. This is a comedy story, except for poor Freddy.
FBI: Most Wanted (2020)
I dropped the other 2 in the series for the lack of reality
I kept this one simply because it was the least over the top. It has the least hype f the trio and calmer demeanor. Though they crew must have access to some secret hypersonic transportation because they cover great distances in Superman mach numbers.
FBI (2018)
I wanted to like the series, except
It seems like every episode involves a foot chase for perps...that's simply ridiculous. It disrespects the service...this has become a farce. Story lines are often far from the purview of Federal jurisdiction.
The 2nd (2020)
Possibly the worst action flick I've ever seen!
The total lack of reality in every scene was unmistakable. The stairwell gun fight using a pistol with unlimited rounds. Fake fist fights abounded. Highly trained Delta guy handcuffs a gigantic bad guy hands in front. The beeping hospital monitor with no sensor attached to the patient. Ryan What's His Name pretending to be Vin Diesel...I could go on and on. The topper was the Motel 2 suite with plastic drapes posing as a Ritz-Carlton. Though it was kind of appropriate for this no name cast.
Spenser Confidential (2020)
Not the Spenser that Robert Parker created in his novels
Too much violence and none of the class that I recall reading in his novels or in Spenser for Hire
9-1-1: Lone Star (2020)
Strange math here
I looked at over 1/3 of the reviewers' star ratings...most were * or ** by far and an occasional misguided 5 or 6. How does that equal a 5.8? Everything that has already been said negatively is understated. I watched the pilot and the 1st (and my last) episode. I stopped watching 9-1-1 as I thought it was too Hollywood Lib. Guess I was wrong. Chicago Fire is the Wild West by comparison. I've been to Austin...how did they get there on a 2-lane road? Where are all the token Hispanics? Sounds like there are only 10 episodes...hopefully.
Private Practice (2007)
I gave it a chance...twice
Yesterday's cake eating episode is a good example of the poor writing already cited here. There is hardly anything believable in these story lines. This set is far too drab for a California med clinic...IMO creating the wrong atmosphere. The actors are great...but everything seems too contrived...the material stinks. The ending of this episode was more like a sitcom.
One of the cast was on a late show this week and sort of hinted that he thought Private Practice could be the end of his string of losers. Unfortunately, I suspect he is mistaken.
It didn't work for me and like so many sequels or spin-offs...this too seems doomed. I deleted it from my DVR's record list...and that wasn't a very big list to begin with.
