My Friend Dahmer (2017)
It accomplishes what it sets out for.
Most of the negative reviews are reflective of what those viewers want the film to be. Unfortunately for them that isn't how art works. I see complaints of "disgustingly making him sympathetic" or it was boring.
How exactly can the filmmaker make him a villain before he's a villain? The whole point of the film is what leads up to the very well documented atrocities he commuted. I don't think we are in any danger of forgiving him through the lens of history. People just want to be offended. As for it being boring, I would suggest folks taking ten seconds to see what a film is about before they watch it and rip it for being something else. Again, the viewers problem not the film's.
The acting is superb and it appears everything is pretty spot on to what we know about his teenage years leading up to his plunge into depravity.
Sorry it didn't make things up to entertain people or avoid other's indignation.
If you're a rational adult with a grasp on the concept it's a rather well-executed indie adaptation of an interesting graphic novel. Worth a watch, unless you want to see the exploitation of 17 innocent guys being murdered of course. That's not here.

If you want to see this *spoilers*
Whether you read the book or just have the interest, watch this. It's not a perfect show but It was a very entertaining series, and certainly above par for King adaptations. Which is the key word- ADAPTation. Don't let many of the elitist twit reviews on here deter you. The series moved away from the series where it needed to in order to be an entertaining picture. It's truly astounding to see so many people not understand that their love for the book doesn't translate to good filmmaking. The book was massive with many unneeded detours. Albeit, As a reader I enjoyed those detours for an enriched read but it would've been an androgynous view with it all in there. Items like a narrative internal voice being placed into having a sidekick to bounce it off of. The lessened detours from the novel. The romance. The changes. They were all necessary and if King himself, thinks they were brilliant then who the hell cares what bitter reviewer 14 from Iowa thinks? Honestly, it was an entertaining piece of TV that was translated from an excellent read. If you are interested- WATCH IT!
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)
Minimal magic of note here
Pretty blasé effort here. On paper this movie looked like a great time and should have been. Carell & Carrey facing off as competing magicians? I think most of us thought that could be a good time. Wasn't.
The performances were acceptable and the production value was there. The script unfortunately was not. There was no real structure or pace to the film. A comedy can get by with that, when there's plenty of laughs; but this one somehow did not have them. The real magic trick going on here is to get Carell and Carrey on board, throw in Buscemi for good measure, and make them all disappear on screen. Seriously, next to no genuinely funny moments. If this film/script had picked an a direction to focus on it might have worked. Instead, it hung around in the middle of mediocre humor and mediocre storytelling.
If you want to kill a few hours, throw it on, there is certainly worse and the stars are likable as usual. If you want something truly funny, charismatic, or moving. Look elsewhere.

The Lords of Salem (2012)
One giant leap forward for Zombie
While Lords of Salem is not a perfect movie; it is many other things. Ambitious uncharted territory (for Zombie) that is shot beautifully. Viewers who enjoy jump scares, gore, and simple plots with no ambiguity will not enjoy this film.
I applaud this film for different reasons. Initially I love its homage to so many cult/witch/satanists films from before (primarily the '70s). I love the performance turned in by Sherri Moon Zombie; who seemed from all previous films to be entertaining but limited. That was not the case in this. A very lonely and troubled recovering addict was turned in with a believable understated performance. I also love the surrealism type of horror that this film embodies. I love that the ending can seem clear to many but ambiguous to others. That is what happens when you do not make it for everyone but rather how you think it should be seen. I love that this film stepped out of the comfort zone of Zombie and really seemed less self-indulgent than his previous works (which I do enjoy).
This movie certainly is not for everyone, but it is for many. It will linger days after you have seen it because its effective. My only complaint is that some of the genre greats in this are barely used, some with no lines. Regardless, if you have a slight interest in this classic genre from decades ago, Zombie, or a different type of horror be sure to check it out.

The Call (2013)
The Call was dropped after an hour
**SPOILERS**
What potential this movie had! A fairly novel approach to the initial plot started out very promising. The first two acts of this film were above average suspense fanfare. Then it just completely crapped in the punch-bowl.
I am uncertain as to why movies feel the need to stoop to the levels of dense viewers. It is insulting, and more importantly infuriating for many viewers who have just spent their money and time on a film that started out worthy of both.
I realize that part of the fun in movies is suspending reality for the sake of entertainment. However, when it transcends to levels of distraction from the film, then it is a problem. I can make my peace with the exponentially growing ridiculous things in this film but eventually it became too much to ignore. A nice example is why the victim could fit half of her body through the seat but then could go no further (where by the way she could see signage to tell dispatch). Any thinking viewer is wondering why one could get their shoulders through but then not her bottom torso. But there is enough chance there to let it go and just work on enjoying yourself.
The last twenty minutes though are just unbelievably idiotic and how anyone reviews this highly is beyond me. There is an excess of stupidity within the last 20 minutes that I am not going to even attempt to break down. The point is that it is a shame that a decent film, that could have been a joy to re-watch in coming years, was thrown out with the bathwater. All in the name of stupid viewers who are evidently who they were catering to. Why so much effort and care was put into the first two acts; only to finish this way is beyond me.
I gave it a five for its efforts before the end. It was entertaining to start!
