Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002)
How original!
Kung Pow:Enter the Fist sounded like a failed cheap B-grade movie, with average reviews and without any great success commercially. After watching it,boy, was I surprised.
Making fun of 70's Hong Kong action movies, from the dubbing to cheesy fighting sequences, you really gotta hand it to Steve Oedekerk, who,I'll just say it,has talent at.I have never in my life seen a spoof comedy like this. The meant-to-be-terrible dubbing was annoying at times, but at some parts you can't help it but laugh because it's exactly or beyond what you had in mind when you see these cheesy scenes.I could literally see the Shaw brothers coughing blood at every scene.
As a young Asian,I guess I'm among those few people who could totally enjoy this movie, simply because I've had my share at poking fun of chop-socky flicks, and also know how to appreciate them as action movies. If my Dad or anyone around his age were to see this however,I think Oedekerk just made himself one of the most hated film-makers among them.
Which is why I love it^^.
Constantine (2005)
Reeves walks between heaven and hell...
Keanu Reeves is in a similar situation with John Constantine.Constantine is sinned for "the life he took",and will be banished to hell,no matter how hard he tries,no matter how many demons he sends back. For Reeves, critics have condemned him to C-grade acting hell, and he is trying to earn his way up and gain some recognition on his acting ability.Nope,'Constantine' doesn't show he's a good actor, but at least and at last,I am convinced that he can act. Some critics are simply being biased toward Reeves;yes,i agree that he's the weakest link in this film, but Francis Lawrence and Rachel Weisz...they all did a fantastic job.All I have to say is,give Reeves and this movie a chance, stop reading reviews and go watch it...you won't be disappointed.
Siu Lam juk kau (2001)
Bravo
To use soccer as a vehicle to spread kung fu to the masses.Perhaps only Mr Stephen Chow Sing Chi could come up with that.It was no surprise that this movie became a huge sensation all across Asia(could have been the world, thanks to miramax).Like all other Sing-yeh's films, this movie really hurt my stomach from the laughter, but it was not only the humor that made me love it so much,in fact,it was the way he executes the movie that makes it a masterpiece.Never before have I ever seen a HK movie so well balanced between action and comedy, and after watching Kung Fu Hustle(his next movie),I was afraid that even he himself could no longer reach the high standard achieved by this film.Shaolin Soccer wasn't just a great movie;it developed my love for kung fu(seriously).Overall, you are bound to love this film, whether you're a soccer fan or not. P.S:I've watched it 12 times already,as of now.
Sai yau gei: Yut gwong bou haap (1995)
Funniest Movie In History
This is the first of a two part movie series adapted from the classic Chinese novel,Journey To The West.I would consider this as the more comedic one, while the second is more action-packed,with a little sense of art-house in it(if you watch the two together it forms a perfect balance). In this movie,Stephen Chow's character had not yet transformed into the all invincible Monkey King, hence not much action here.It was also extremely loosely based on the novel,so fans of the book might not really like this. The comedy level in this movie is so extreme...you can't even stop laughing for a minute,so if necessary, watch it bit by bit to catch some breath.Watch this solely for the humor, and you'll see a masterpiece.Sing-yeh's best film of the nineties.
