Dream Seeker (2018)
5/10
An Underdog Indiefilmmaker Story
16 October 2023
Dream Seeker is a great short comedy about a creative man in a boring job who just wants to make films and make a decent living out of it. Ben Mansfield and Max Rudd are captivating in this short film as Greg and Seb, the comedic duo who attempt to make a riveting movie based on their life experiences. They send it to a film festival and win awards and cash prizes. It's a film that goes full story in most character arcs and that's excellent writing. Shot around the beautiful foliage of Norfolk and has impressive cinematography throughout it. This is simply a film worth watching for anyone who cares about making films.

It has its moments

The performances are okay for the most part. Tara Reid (American Pie 1999, Sharknado film series) gets top billing, but then so did Bryan Cranston in 2014's Godzilla. She is not that great, though her moment stands out. It is a little harder picking out the Aaron Taylor-Johnson of the piece though. The survivors are played fine, but they are kind of bland beyond their quirks. Alan (Richard Hochman: Everyone Wants Theirs series, Tide Waters 2014) is the jerk who takes charge. Reese (ViDonna Michaels: The Beautiful Life series, Clean Break 2007) is the put-upon girlfriend of the cowardly Warren (Ben Stobber: The Immortal Wars series, Ten Violent Women Two 2017), Ivy (Shelby McCullough: Classacts 2018) is the lesbian, etc.

No Michael but so what?

I can see what John Carpenter was trying to do with this franchise. It's a shame that there was no more anthology stories after this cause I'd be curious. Music was so great! Always a pleasure to listen to Carpenter's work and Tommy Lee Wallace's direction makes an original piece of sci-fi/horror. I'm not dying to watch it again straight away but I would recommend this to anyone.

Absolutely fantastic

The actor portraying the Joker was perhaps one of the best performances I've ever seen. This was bold, dark and gripping every second I was watching this. Beautiful yet gothic looking cinematography which creates an astonishing look out familiar city. Not bad green screen. This could easily be longer. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
