Firefly (2002)
a balance of genres
I can't believe it took me so long to get involved with this. I kept dismissing it as a part time project for Joss and heard it had been something he'd wanted to do in between Buffy and Angel. Boy was i wrong! It was such a smooth mix between western and future (and me being a a star trek) fan i was glad to see a grittier side to space and the future. And a lot of accuracy - no noise in space, what with it being a vacuum and all! And the ship not being spotless but that lived in look. The rag-tag crew that bicker but still look out for each other. All in all it offered something slightly different and caters to all tastes. I hope for more helpings of this brand and from Joss.
Axe Raiders (2007)
a great small company film
Excellent use of backdrops and scenery. Script a little mediocre at times, but better than previous Winter Warrior films. The fight scenes were great in some shots and poor in others, due to the same guys used over and over again. Even with a low budget, maybe if they'd got more people as extras, that would 'flesh out' the scenes and give more variety. Having a few more people duking it out in background whilst main fighters lock horns in front of camera give a sense of realism - obviously not every fight scene, but in just enough so you see things happen and with extra faces to show depth and the possibility that there are actually more people around. This is definitely better than some of the other films they've brought out, but hopefully they will provide bigger and better next time.
Quite Ugly One Morning (2004)
A pretty good book adaption with a few changes...
I saw this before i had read the book, and James Nesbitt is a brilliant actor. It seemed as though the part had been written for him. And from what i saw it was brilliant. Until i read the book. Whilst staying as close to the book as they could (or tried to) the were some major changes. Rather than ruin it for people i won't say what the changes were, but in my eyes James Nesbitt is perfect as Jack Parlabane (even though the character is from Glasgow). If you've read the book then at least see this to see how it might have looked. If you haven't watch this first then read the book. You shouldn't be too disappointed - even with the changes to the Plot. I'd love to see some of the other books adapted for TV or hopefully cinemas.
