Rift (2011)
totally under-rated.
why is it that the actually exceptional movies get low "scores" here, whilst the generic cliché-ridden ludicrously ineptly plotted "no-brain required" idiot-catering pap gets rated high??? i'm seriously considering basing my viewing choices on how LOW a movie is rated here or rotten tomatoes etc. This movie for example blew me away with it's plot style & integrity, as well as its camera angles, as if they'd taken the best of every recent TV & movie "style" then created their own disturbing (in the "good way" ie, applicable to the genre) take on their usage thereof. The acting was well above average, sublime even in parts, believable even in its occasional lower points (few & far between). The soundtrack fitted perfectly their twist on the "college kids in horror movie" scenario, all in all a refreshing & thought inspiring diversion from the run of the Hollywood grist mill that, again, for some reason i cannot fathom, gets generally much higher ratings than gems such as this. i wonder if IMDb would consider adding a "lowest rating movies" section or search engine parameter, it would save me heaps of time in finding worthwhile movies to actually Enjoy.
Absentia (2011)
Awesome & Fathoms Deep.
i don't think i'v seen a better suspense/horror movie ever. Now i have to fill 10 lines??? Subtle. Eerie. Deep. So many ways in aftermath to "explain" what might have happened. Uses great interpretative "what if's" of global mythologies. Uses clear concise extrapolations of scientific dimensional possibilities. Leaves the viewer contemplating all those aforementioned "what if's", "explanations" & "in between" spaces from mythology through dimensional perspectives. Draws the viewer into the whole "human/emotional" interplay & states of the main players. Allows both slow-building dread & sudden shocks to inter-weave throughout. In All? Totally immersing & intense piece. i'd give it a rating of 13 out of 10, but apparently i can't...
Wake the Witch (2010)
Well Worth Watching
i seriously cannot understand all the negative reviews of this Gorgeous Work.
it's almost as if those "reviewers" either haven't actually watched it or are simply too used to the usual banal "hollywood" gore-fests & "subtle-as-a-brick-to-the-face" clichés that they couldn't cope with the intrinsic Dreaminess & slow-building momentum of this quite deep Gem.
& as for the "lack of continuity" & "incoherent scene changes" alluded to in those reviews?
well i can only surmise that those viewers either simply have short attention spans or limited deductive reasoning, (or some "ax to grind"), as i thought it held together wonderfully, & that the vast majority of the acting throughout was both sincere & warmly portrayed, with even quite exploratory character depth & relationships that were more "intuitive" than blatantly "walk-through elaborations", Beautifully filmed, & generally all round an Artistic (not "arty") offering. Really worth curling up in front of & just allowing the movie to take you along on it's eerie journey, & i'll watch it again no doubt, something i hardly ever do. :)
Disturbia (2007)
a question more than a review...
uh, "chicken or egg?" time... ie, this movie & "fright night" (the original, but mainly the remake) have so many commonalities (apart from "actual" vampires) that i'm surprised it gets compared instead to the vintage alfred hitchcock offering "rear window"... ??? :P
Still, the old saying of "hollywood has only ever made 7 movies"... (or whatever the number is... eg, i'd personally say "only 1", ie, basically it merely keep re-packaging "the 10 commandments")
...goes a long way towards explaining THAT bit.
Anyway, not putting the movie down, (some quite intense acting seems to be Shia LaBeouf's forte/penchant, & has saved many a movie i'v seen him in - nearly even "transformers" lolz) it's just that i find it somewhat amazing that this movie keeps getting compared to the hitchcock film, whilst it really seems more like a (stripped of the supernatural of course) parallel to "fright night" (the remake).
No One Lives (2012)
character "tactics" flawed & unbelievable.
i'd give it a "1" (as zero appears to be missing from the drop-down menu), but, (as "awful" actually means "inspiring awe"), "2" will needs suffice. Some cheap thrills & ho-hum gore, but (without actually revealing too many "spoilers") about the only thing it has going for it is that you can fill in large amounts of the playing time amusing yourself by poking fun at the ridiculous "tactics" used, both by the supposedly "street-smart" characters as they attempt to survive, & by the equally (if not even more so) ludicrous & totally unbelievable (in the sense that they are either actually impossible or are just thoroughly implausible - & not in the sense of "could be done", more in the vein of "why would anybody be so stupid?") methods used by their foe against them.
All in all? a whole big bag of waaaaay too much "suspension of disbelief" to be even remotely worth watching for anyone that would actually have a chance of surviving such a set of circumstances, or whom has enough of the at least half of a functioning brain required to laugh outright at the many many major flaws in the "strategies" & "techniques" of both the "victims" & their "foe" (nobody would possibly be so inept as, or let their guard down so thoroughly, so often, as everyone in this cliché-fest of pseudo-intellectual tripe does). In conclusion? made for the mindless, a trite attempt at a psychological thriller/slasher, replete with oodles of the stock-standard "no thinking required" preposterousnesses that any pap-fed populace could desire with their burgers, fries & super-sized slushy, so , unfortunately for the future of the Species, the vast majority of you will most likely drool over it...
