Pariah (2011)
Perfectly Executed and Packs a Huge Punch
I first saw this at Sundance and was so blown away by it. Bradford Young's cinematography was completely stunning and all the performances were powerful, but especially Adepero Oduye (WHY she never blew up after this still makes me mad). I can't even count the number of times I've seen it since. Dee Rees packs it all in here: comedy, tragedy, love, loss, longing, desire, rejection, hope...You feel every color on the screen. It remains an impressive debut.

A Queer Classic
I just saw "Dramarama" and it made me think back to this perfect 90s queer coming-of-age classic. I remember seeing this when there were very few films out there for LGBT youth - at least not a lot of positive stuff. This film still feels so genuine and real. It wears its heart on its sleeve in the best way.
Dramarama (2020)
So Nostalgic
This film took me right back into my (awkward) high school years in a way that was really sweet and unexpected. The actors are all so good - especially Danielle Kay and Nick Pugliese. I laughed out loud so many times and definitely got a lump in my throat in the last scene. It all just felt so genuine. Definitely not your typical coming-of-age film.
